The slam poet known as Lady Vanessa Cardona is about to hit the stage for a show that brings together elements of dance, ceremony, monologues, and even clowns.

The show is Three Ladies, and is meant to be a show about healing.

Lady Vanessa says she beileves that people can heal themselves despite the traumas that have visited their lives.

Her show starts this coming Thursday night, and runs all week-eked at the ATB Arts Barn.

Lady Vanessa, how are you?

Author and historian, Kevin Allen, didn;t intend on writing a history of gays in Calgary, but once he started a line of enquiry, it led him to discovering a largely unknown social scene. His book, "Our Past Matters: Stories of Gay Calgary" has been out for a year, and Russell Bowers caught up with Allen just prior to his appearance at the "Get Lit" literary festival on November 16 in Fort Macleod at the Empress Theatre.

Marty Chan is an Edmonton writer who's written 19 books for young adults, and the latest is called "Kung Fu Master." It's about high schooler, Jon Wong, who's frustrated that he isn't as cool as his martial arts hero, Bruce Lee. He decides to play into a stereotype about Asians being good at Kung Fu to try and impress his peers. Marty Chan dropped in to chat about the new book with Russell Bowers ahead of his book launch at the Whitemud Crossing Edmonton Public Library on November 18.

In November of 2018, Daybreak was on the road to Fort Macleod for an evening at the Empress Theatre and as part of the night, new Alberta books were part of the discussion. Some folks thought it might be fun if the town had it's own book festival and after a year of planning, the "Get Lit Literary Festival" is a go for Saturday, November 16. Participating in the first year will Sid Marty from the Crowsnest Pass, Fran Kimmel from Lacombe, Kevin Allen from Calgary, as well as award-winning author, Ali Bryan. Se was also short-listed for the Leacock Medal for Humour, for her Calgary family drama, the novel about a family called The Figgs. Russell caught up with Ali to chat about the praise the book has received.

On November 9, a special ceremony Alberta's Government House in Edmonton saw Canada's Governor General, Julie Payette, awarding the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers to Larry Wilkins. Larry has been an entrepreneur, successfully running a spa business for many years but in 2012, he started to look at giving back. His upbringing as a First Nations kid played a big role in benefiting a First Nations school near Ponoka, and his efforts to raise money to build a new high school is the reason he's been honoured. Before he headed over Government House, Larry Wilkins dropped in to the Daybreak studio to chat with Russell Bowers.
