DC on SCREEN | DC Studios News & Reviews

It's that time again! The big annual crossover on the CW has occurred, and we have witnessed it in all its glory (and some of its less-gloriousness). We seem to talk mostly about the latter, of course, but we ask tough questions as well! Do we want a Batwoman series? Do we want a Superman series? Do the CW producers dig themselves into a hole by using names they have absolutely no intention of honoring?  We look at a lot of these questions, and somewhere in there, there's a review of this crossover and some conjecture for the future crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths (or Kerfuffle in Two Towns). One thing is for certain: You can give us Flash, Supergirl, and Green Arrow as well as every supporting player in their respective shows, but you can never give us enough John Wesley Shipp and his 90s Flash!

DC on SCREEN #521 - Elseworlds Review

We got to attend one of the local Amazon Prime showings of 'Aquaman'! The first 10 or so minutes is spoiler-free, but shortly thereafter we get to the end of the film thusly.

The plot isn't wholly original--far from it, but that's not what's truly remarkable about 'Aquaman.' James Wan and his crew painstakingly create a world where people live and thrive beneath our ocean, and they've done it convincingly. Even if you can argue for some dodgy CGI, there's no denying they've truly innovated the special effects space in front of them to tell this story.

'Aquaman' is full of jokes, but Aquaman himself is no longer a joke! A whiskey-chugging, bar-brawling, trash-talking badass, he reluctantly embarks on a quest to become king of Atlantis when his brother threatens war on the surface world.  It's an admittedly McGuffin-driven adventure, but one that's full of big action pieces, beautiful environments more expected in a Luc Besson Sci-Fi piece than a superhero film, and a whole lot of potential for future Aquaman (and DC) films!

This one's a win!

Dave and Scott didn't get to see 'Batman: Mask of the Phantasm' in theaters 25 years ago, but they did Monday night! Dave's wife Bethany has NEVER seen the film--nor any of 'Batman: The Animated Series'! Did it live up to the expectation for Scott and Dave? What was Bethany's first impression of this highly-touted animated adventure? Will she want to watch any of the award-winning series that impacted the comic book community?

This week on DC on SCREEN, Jason records his final pre-papa episode! And we discuss the completion of "Aquaman' and its run-time, David Ayer's online swipe at the theatrical cut of 'Suicide Squad', the theatrical coming of 'The Death of Superman' and 'Reign of the Supermen', Psycho Pirate, an homage too far, the secret Elseworld's guest star, 'Swamp Thing' castings, a 'Stargirl' casting, and Jeremy Irons' role in HBO's 'Watchmen' has been confirmed! And not really anything else. Sorry. Just being honest.

Today we pull an unreleased review out of the DC on SCREEN vault! 'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox' is a fantastic DC animated film, and we hope you agree! That by no means implies perfection, however, and we delve into everything we liked and disliked about this classic piece of animation!  If you haven't seen it, be sure to rent or buy it on Amazon, Apple, or check it out on DC Universe before listening because we get super spoilery!

The Legends have taken care of every last pesky anachronism they caused throughout history, but John Constantine's warning about the supernatural invasion is beginning to shape into something very real! Hippies, Woodstock, the Beatles, Hendrix, Garcia, Joplin, and a savage, heart-eating unicorn all coalesce to form the weirdest episode of 'Legends of Tomorrow' we've ever seen. But it was solid, hilarious, and Biff Tannen was there!  Let us know what you thought of the season premiere!
