DC on SCREEN | DC Studios News & Reviews

Jason and I review the first DC Universe Animated Movie, 2007's Superman: Doomsday!

Throw us a weird, emotionally-stunted Supes with the mumps, an overly-dramatic Lois, Lex as a sexual predator and a subscription to the National Voyeur, cause we're getting into all the things that didn't work about this forced PG-13 debacle (and the few things that did)!

From Jimmy Olsen’s true-crime docuseries DC Crime to James Gunn’s Clayface tease, this week’s DC on SCREEN dives deep into the weirdest corners of the DC Universe — and maybe the cosmos. We’re breaking down the latest Supergirl updates, the supposed Lanterns release shuffle, and what the rumored Paramount-Warner merger could mean for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. Also -- who the hell could Alan Ritchson be playing in the DCU? Plus: we get sidetracked by grey aliens, Betty and Barney Hill, and Valiant Thor — because of course we do.

DC Crime (New HBO Max Series)

• American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are developing a Jimmy Olsen-lead series DC Crime, a true-crime show hosted by Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo).
• Season 1 focuses on Gorilla Grodd, with James Gunn and Peter Safran executive producing.

Supergirl

• Actor David Krumholtz (Zor-El) confirms the film will dive deeper into the House of El and Krypton’s legacy.
• Reports of reshoots/additional photography may include David Corenswet’s Superman, possibly explaining the missing costume from the WB Studio Tour.

Clayface

• James Gunn celebrates Clayface’s comic anniversary, confirming Tom Rhys Harries will bring the tragic villain to life.
• The post hints at a more nuanced, human Clayface rather than a pure monster.

Lanterns Update

• The Hollywood Reporter quietly confirms that Lanterns will debut after Supergirl in the new DCU timeline, but is that new information?

DC Studios & Paramount Merger Rumors

• Bloomberg reports Paramount CEO David Ellison aims to keep Gunn and Safran’s leadership intact if a merger happens.
• We talk about corporate shake-ups, creative stability, and what that could mean for the DCU’s future.

Fandom Flanderization & Brainiac

• Gunn reposts a video on “fandom flanderization”, reminding fans that there’s no single “true” version of DC’s heroes — just evolving interpretations.

Alan Ritchson’s “Messier” Role Talks

• Ritchson confirms conversations with DC Studios about playing a morally grey anti-hero, saying he wants something “a little dirtier” than a clean-cut protagonist.

Bat-Fam Animated Series

• The new DC animated series Bat-Fam is now streaming on Prime Video.

Bonus Tangents

• Grey aliens.
• Betty & Barney Hill’s abduction.
• Valiant Thor’s alleged time at the Pentagon.

How did this episode find us, you wonder? How did we like the reveal of the alternate universe's big secret? We got deep in on this one -- from why Adrian's dad wasn't gay in the alternate universe (and why Chris may have been disappearing on his family) to issues with basement keys, bush dives, and dry heaves... And of course we talk about the Beatles, that great conversation between Chris and Harcourt -- so much...

Peacemaker gets a little bit wild as we get deeper into the antics of Eagly's culturally-appropriating arch-nemesis Red St. Wild! We talk our thoughts on this episode, the internet's thoughts on it, and where we think it might be heading! Ginger Cool is batting a thousand in our hearts as is his nemesis, Langston Fleury! Also, is Red St. Wild's sorcery tapping into The Red? Will Ads go into the alternate reality with Chris and prove our Earth X theory?

Superman

Superman’s Box Office Triumph & DCU Updates

The DC Universe is taking shape, and it all starts with Superman. The film has officially crossed $614 million worldwide, with $353M domestic (57.5%) and $260M international (42.5%). James Gunn has called the movie’s success the “biggest relief of his life” because if it hadn’t worked, the future of the entire DCU slate—from Supergirl to Lanterns—would have been in jeopardy.

Superman Box Office Update

• Domestic box office: $353,302,360
• International box office: $260,800,000
• Worldwide total: $614,102,360
This breakdown shows how crucial U.S. audiences remain for superhero films, even as international numbers grow.

Variety and Deadline Report on Superman Profit Margin

• Superman has an 8-week profit margin of about $125 million.
• It is the seventh-highest grossing film of the year.
• By comparison Man of Steel's profit margin was $42.7 million.
• We explain why domestic is still more profitable to studios than international.

Gunn Relieved by Superman Success

James Gunn admitted that Superman’s success was critical for DC Studios:“If Superman didn’t work, I’m the head of DC Studios! What am I gonna do now? We have Supergirl, Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, Clayface—they’re all connected to this!”

Peacemaker

Superman’s Visit to the Peacemaker Set

A behind-the-scenes photo dated July 23, 2024 sparked speculation. David Corenswet appeared on the Peacemaker set in full Superman costume while James Gunn was splitting directing duties between Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. Fans believe this signals a direct connection between the two projects, with Superman potentially playing a meaningful role in Peacemaker Season 2. We disagree somewhat.

How Would Fleury See Hawkgirl?

Fans asked James Gunn online what Fleury might think of Hawkgirl. His playful response:“I think he’d wonder what’s wrong with her head and wouldn’t really know.”

Yes the Grammar Fuck Up Was Intentional

James Gunn confirmed that the infamous “Your the best” typo was intentional, sparking fan discussion. He also joked about Harcourt’s “Thirstcourt” side in her texts, keeping his trademark banter alive.

Clayface

Clayface – Gotham City Map Easter Eggs

A leaked Gotham City Transit Authority map revealed nods to Batman lore: Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemical, the Iceberg Lounge, Blackgate Penitentiary, Gotham Knights sporting complex, Wayne-owned buildings, Kane Estate, and Kane Memorial Bridge. Fans debated similarities to real-world Manhattan maps (like Hell’s Kitchen).

Man of Tomorrow – Superman Sequel Announced

James Gunn confirmed Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9, 2027, almost exactly two years after Superman. Gunn clarified:

• It’s not titled Superman 2, just Man of Tomorrow.
• The film will explore Superman and Lex Luthor’s relationship, with Nicholas Hoult’s Luthor donning the green-and-purple Warsuit.
• Speculation: Possible villains may be Bizarro, Brainiac, or Zod.
• Gunn emphasized his collaborative writing process and ongoing rewrites.

People Responding to James Gunn

The Man of Tomorrow announcement drew reactions from DC stars and creators:

• Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl): “See You Soooon”
• Aaron Pierre (John Stewart): “Yes, Indeed!” 💚
• Dan Slott: cryptically thrilled, “For reasons I can’t mention…”
• Grant Gustin: ❗❗
• Brandon Routh: ❤️🙌

Lois is Important

When asked about Lois Lane’s role in Man of Tomorrow, Gunn confirmed:“She’s important.”

Very, Very Connected

Gunn reassured fans that while projects can be enjoyed independently, Peacemaker Season 2 and Man of Tomorrow are “very, very connected”—a key part of the DCU’s shared storytelling.

The Batman Epic Crime Saga

Colin Farrell, who reprises his Penguin role, called The Batman Part II screenplay “extraordinary.” He expressed doubts about a second season of The Penguin, preferring perhaps to leave the story as-is rather than risk diminishing it.

DCTea – DC Studios Project UpdatesUpcoming projects are at varying stages of development:

• Man of Tomorrow (next DC movie)
• The Batman Part II
• Booster Gold, Wonder Woman, Paradise Lost, The Authority (somewhat change), Brave & the Bold — all in progress.

Why Gunn Changed the Meaning of A.R.G.U.S.

In the DCU, A.R.G.U.S. now means Advanced Research Group of The United States, shifting emphasis from “uniting superheroes” to keeping them in check.

The Canonicity of Welcome to Metropolis Book

James Gunn confirmed the Welcome to Metropolis prequel novel is not canon, emphasizing that only filmed media counts as official DCU continuity.

The Answer About The Question

When asked about rights issues surrounding Charlton Comics characters, Gunn assured fans that The Question is available and remains one of his personal favorites.

Those Joker & Harley Quinn Movie Rumors

Filmmaker Zach Cregger addressed rumors about a Joker/Harley Quinn project. While he denied Gunn’s involvement, he confirmed his own Gotham-set script exists, focusing on a low-level Gotham goon—which he considers his best work. The project remains possible for the future

What we initially believed to be a short, slow episode with very little to discuss turned out to yield a lot of conversation about a possibly all-white town, undercover martians, alt Eagle theories and a whole lot more!
