Black lives matter
Is a serious matter
It’s not just a phrase
But a strong case
Against brutality
Caused by white supremacy
By those who promised to serve and protect
Upholding the law
Not realizing the devastating effect
I have a dream
So many people scream
Famously uttered by Martin Luther King
Fighting for this very reason
To stand up against discrimination
To end bigotry and segregation
To be part of a civilized nation
Where your not judged by the color of your skin
Where you’re no longer a minority
And there is equality
Unfortunately it’s still a dream
Cause we are living a nightmare of a reality
You ask what’s the matter
Black lives matter
It’s not a fancy hash tag
To put on a T-shirt
Like some graphite art
It is a strong message
Representing the many affected, different ages
Living in fear
Wondering is this the year
I get shot or beaten
For asking a simple question
Or crossing an intersection
You’re filled with rage
Cause one man took the stage
To address this hate
Kneeling to the anthem
To shed light on this matter, Black lives matter
Like Malcolm
Now he is axed
Cast away and isolated
Cause he used his voice and presence
To speak up against your ignorance
To shatter your privileged arrogance
On the subject matter, black lives matter
How many deaths will it take
To see a mothers heart break, ache
See her child on the news
Become a headline, breaking news
Not for prizes or accolades
But a photo, deceased due to hate
Are you so blinded by the system
That you don’t realize we live in a broken system
Where whites can carry guns and protest
But blacks can’t even go to the grocery store without a consent
Are we really in a first world country
Where politicians pretend to try
To understand this grave matter
Blacks lives matter
Where they only care about their congressional seats
Making fake promises of reform
Making glorified speeches, we understand
But when the time comes, they refuse to stand
For the one matter, Black lives matter
So have we really progressed as a nation
What is the measure of our progression
The technological advancements of our generation
Are we that naive that we can’t comprehend
The simple human interactions
Are broken and divided
Because one race is considered superior
And another inferior
That is not progression
That is a nation in regression
Cause we can’t address what matters
Black lives matters!
