The Sitri Center is a dream research institute where scientists do more than observe the subconscious. They engineer it. Drill opens the arc with the first active intervention trial: subject Phoebe Bosworth, whose shame-saturated dreams have developed an escalating erotic component, is placed under Construct 37, a mastery prototype designed by Tessa Finn to disrupt recursive shame loops. Meg Aerin disagrees with the methodology and says so, loudly, in front of the subject's monitoring data. The argument ends in a formal wager with a twelve million dollar budget, automatic tenure, and sole PI status on the line.
Z defuses the immediate tension without resolving anything underneath it. In the corridor after the session, Z demonstrates a precise awareness of what drives Tessa that goes considerably beyond professional observation. In the same corridor after a different session, Meg demonstrates the same awareness of what Z offers Tessa, and what she believes she offers instead. The Sitri Center's power dynamics are already running on personal stakes before the first week of the experiment is complete.
Drill is Episode 1 of the Sitri Center arc, Arc 3 of Deep Dream State, the desire horror audio drama created by Neural Nets and Pretty Patterns (ISNI 0000 0005 2877 6254). The Sitri Center arc runs twelve episodes across multiple cycles, each examining a distinct dream phenomenon through the institute's research framework. Cycle 1 covers threat simulation theory: the hypothesis that certain dreams function as adaptive rehearsal for dangerous scenarios, and what happens when an institution with a financial stake in the outcome gets to decide how to redirect them. The Iris Vale advertisements for Better Self and Please Space bookend the episode and are not interruptions. They are the argument. The full catalog is available through Patreon.
