November 10, 2020 2013.08.12 Eric Person on Sonny Rollins 1 of 3
How lucky are we to have experienced the music of Sonny Rollins, the greatest improviser in the history of recorded music? Uh oh, I'm naming names! Did I just start a Jazz fracas? If I did, I think saxophonist Eric Personwill get my back. Through the years of Deep Focus, Eric has been my most frequent guest. All this month, Eric Person is my guest on Deep Focus rebroadcasts; this one is from 2013.

November 07, 2020 2017.03.06 Eric Person on Woody Shaw 3 of 3
In the Jazz world of utterly distinctive individuals, trumpeter Woody Shaw still managed to stand out. He didn’t speak like everybody else, he didn’t move like everybody else (the hours of tai chi that he would do-- sometimes right in the audience of a performance venue-- might have had something to do with that), he didn’t think like everybody else and he certainly didn’t play like anybody else. When saxophonist Eric Anthony Person
and host Mitch Goldman were coming up, his live shows were not to be missed. This is going to be a barnburner!#WKCR #DeepFocus #EricPerson #WoodyShaw #MitchGoldman #Jazz #JazzRadio #JazzInterview #JazzPodcastPhoto credit: Tom Marcello Webster, New York, USA, CC BY-SA 2.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

October 24, 2020 2017.09.04 Henry Threadgill on Thelonious Monk 3 of 3
“Whatever you think can’t be done, somebody will come along and do it.” Thelonious Monk said those words; Henry Threadgill embodies those words. This week's Deep Focus: Henry Threadgill on Thelonious Monk with host Mitch Goldman in a rebroadcast from 2017.

The number of people who fully appreciate and can lend insight into Thelonious Monk’s musical achievements? Few. The number who know what it’s like to hear music no one has heard before? Far fewer. Henry Threadgill is the most distinctive and inventive composer/bandleader in music today and has been for many years. Besides, Henry’s a crack-up! Oh, this one…!
