Today's severe misunderstanding of the First Amendment's Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses and Thomas Jefferson's 1802 phrase a "wall of separation of church and state" has led to a modern belief that any mention or reference to religion in public discourse is improper and a sign of an impending theocracy.  This view is either ignorant of or intentionally overlooks the role of religion for our founders and for society for those who formed our nation and ratified the First Amendment.
