In this captivating episode, Howard Glasser shares his incredible journey to recognizing the potential greatness in every child and how nurturing their intensity can lead to empowerment and transformation.
Trained as a child psychologist, the methods he first used worsened the family relationships. Remembering how he himself was a difficult child, he used his memory of his own needs to reconstruct what children are craving from adults, which is often in direct contrast to how parents and teachers usually behave. He asserts that intense and challenging behavior in children is a sign of their potential greatness and should not be suppressed or medicated. Instead redirected and seen for the fuel that it is.
Howard’s unique approach “nurtured heart approach.” is being studied by four universities and has been adopted by school districts across the country and around the world. We discuss the implications this approach has on our speaking confidence.
Howard Glasser is Founder is the creator and developer of the Nurtured Heart Approach®. He is a voice of greatness for children so that they can ultimately find their own voice of greatness.
He has been referred to as one of the most influential persons working to reduce children’s reliance on psychiatric medications. Howard is the author of 15 books, including Transforming the Difficult Child, a longstanding bestseller on intense and challenging children. The Nurtured Heart Approach is currently being researched by Rutgers University, the University of Arizona’s Zuckerman School of Public Health, and New Mexico State University.

Fotini Iconomopoulos is an expert in negotiation and conflict resolution. She understands that most people aren’t fans of conflict and associate negotiation with potential conflict. Our brain’s fight or flight response kicks in, just like when faced with a physical threat like a sabertooth tiger (metaphorically speaking, of course). Even though we don’t face the same physical threats today, our bodies still react the same way during stressful conversations.
Fotini’s book, Say Less, Get More, encourages taking a pause to regain rationality before saying something we might regret. She knows the fears that come up during negotiations – leaving something on the table and damaging relationships. Through her workshops and surveys, Fotini helps people navigate these saber-tooth tiger moments and negotiate with grace and diplomacy.
