Kathryn Bigelow's latest film dives deeply into the Algiers Motel incident during the 1967 Detroit riots. Dealing with police brutality and its constant march against innocent Black Americans and the outcome that comes along with it are the central themes of this film. Taking her knowledge of war filming, Bigelow is able to craft a film that focuses on the characters far more than the situation and brings the violence and racism leveled against them to the forefront with expert skill. Breakout performances from Algee Smith, John Boyega, and Will Poulter help to show the gravity of choices on the perpetrators and their victims.
