Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy rang in 2021 with their first show of the new year, talked about the end of 2020, and surveyed the slow landscape of the Hot Stove, where there has not been much action. Will the season start on time, and will the games be played? The guys used other sports as an example, plus broke down the financial aspect to determine the answer.

This show had a unique start, as Dawg presented Veteran of the Day and it became the entire first segment of the show. Jerry Coleman is in the US Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame, and is in the Baseball HoF as the 2005 winner of the Ford C. Frick Award for his broadcast work, mainly with the San Diego Padres. The guys recapped his three amazing career, as a Marine who fourth both in World War II and the Korean War, as a four-time World Series champion infielder with the New York Yankees, and his amazing time behind the microphone. Is Springer down to the Mets and Blue Jays? Riz had a very decisive opinion about that one. Dawg reiterated his desire to have Springer join the Mets, and then it was on to Trevor Bauer, who Riz thinks should be the apple of the Mets' eye.

Could Bauer end up in Anaheim? The guys covered the Angels' recent front-office moves, including the reported hiring of Ray Montgomery, friend of the show, from the Brewers. Bauer's former team, the Reds, is also making some noise by apparently testing the waters for deals on the remaining pitchers from their rotation, Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray. The guys broke down who could be suitors, what they might offer, and why it would or would not make sense.

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy watched the first domino in the offseason fall, and it was a big one. James McCann hit on two categories, as he is a catcher and now a Met. Riz & Dawg calculated the next moves for the Mets and what their signing of McCann means for the rest of the league when it comes to the vital position behind the plate. Where will JT Realmuto land? Should the Mets prioritize Trevor Bauer or George Springer next? Riz had a very strong opinion and might have swayed Dawg, as he did with the catchers.

Dawg was a week ahead on calling the potential for owners to push back the start of the season, and went deeper into depth on that point as news broke earlier in the day that it was being discussed. That was not the only thing from an ownership standpoint that made news, as the guys discussed the final season of the Cleveland Indians, who announced they are changing their name -- albeit after the 2021 season.

Those owners have begun to sign players to one-year contracts, and Riz took a look at three outfielders and their deals, tasking Dawg to throw economics at the issue to see if this becomes a predictor of deals we are going to see over the next few months. Not to be left out were the saga of DJ LeMahieu and his negotiations with the Yankees, a view of what the threshold should be for them to sign him, and what options they have if they moved on.

Dawg presented Veteran of the Day. Gustave F. Perna is a United States Army four-star general who serves as the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed. It was another timely choice, with the COVID vaccine seeing its first injections into Americans earlier in the day. Perna is a New Jersey native who attended Morris Hills High School, before graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Valley Forge Military Academy and College with an associate degree in business administration.

Dawg presented Veteran of the Day, the late Chuck Yeager, who died Dec. 7 at age 97. Brigadier General Yeager was the epitome of American dominance in the air, most famously remembered in the book and movie The Right Stuff. Then a captain in the Air Force, Yeager was the first person to break the sound barrier Oct. 14, 1947. He shot down five planes in a single day in World War II, and 13 overall. He flew over 150 different aircraft as a test pilot and logged over 10,000 flight hours. Author Tom Wolfe put it best: ”He was the most righteous of all the possessors of the right stuff.”

On the first show post-Thanksgiving, Riz & Dawg talked about the catchers. They broke down the reasons Dawg wants JT Realmuto and Riz wants James McCann. As players, agents and GMs seem to lie in wait for Steve Cohen and the Mets to make the first move, the guys identified a potential spoiler who could strategically jump into the mix. Also covered were the latest assessment of Trevor Bauer, the Charlie Morton deal with Atlanta, and George Springer.

There was a section about finances, in which Riz tasked Dawg with figuring out net dollars vs. gross dollars, and how it would potentially change the luxury tax threshold, plus the implications for salary cap in the NFL, NHL and NBA.

Once again, Dawg's Mets dominated the early part of the conversation as the guys broke down the front-office moves and strategized how Theo Epstein will end up in Flushing. There are a lot of moving parts, but they covered them all. There was talk of how D.J. Lemahieu might be the biggest domino to fall in free agency, because it affects what the Yankees will do and who they might be looking for. A full breakdown of the Yankees' and the Mets' lineups were part of the discussion.

With Epstein's departure, it called for an examination of how he left the Cubs. Riz & Dawg determined the fate of Kris Bryant on the show, and once again promised an Diamond Diehards appearance from "Cousin" Anthony Rizzo during the off-season.

On Veterans Day, our own Army Dawg gave his thoughts about what the day means to him and others who have served their country. Dawg spoke at length about it in one of the can't miss moments in Diamond Diehards history.

To kick it off, the guys dove right into the Mets' situation, with ownership moving to Steve Cohen, who promised to make the franchise relevant and looked for a World Series within the first 3-to-5 years. Riz & Dawg broke down different philosophies the Mets could weight in terms of roster construction for today and down the line. There was a review of the possible free agent targets, with most of the focus on all the pros and cons of signing NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer, plus All-Star catch J.T. Realmuto and centerfield standout George Springer. The guys had different outlooks for who they'd go after and what they'd offer.

The Veteran of the Day, delivered by Dawg, was CW4 Michael Grenier, Accounting Supervisor US Property and Finance Office Connecticut Army National Guard. Grenier enlisted in 1979. He was mobilized and deployed for Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2009-2010). Fittingly for this episode, he is a big Mets fan, going back to the days of George “The Stork” Theodore.
