Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy covered all the topics making news off the field as all the great pictures of baseball are showing us that spring training is here. They covered Dominic Smith's interview of Barry Bonds, Taijuan Walker taking No. 99 in deference to Mr. Met, Scott Kazmir's comeback attempt, Riz's playoff run in the Strat-O-Matic Elite Media Experts League, and the situations surrounding Yankees pitcher Domingo German and former Mariners CEO Kevin Mather. Nothing was off limits on this episode.

Dawg got things going with Veteran of the Day, which was Negro League Hall of Famer Bullet Rogan, who served in the Philippines prior to WW1 with the 24th Infantry Regiment (an original Buffalo Soldiers unit), then re-enlisted in 1914 and served during WW1. Where does this deal rate? The guys broke down the angles on what could make it the perfect deal and where it could go wrong. Plus took a look at things outside the box from a financial perspective.

It was a great day for baseball, as the league's biggest emerging star made news for the right reasons on the day where players were reporting to spring training in various sites across Florida and Arizona. It's days like this that are the reason we are diehards for hardball!

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy welcomed former MLB infielder Jeff Frye to Diamond Diehards. Frye had a nine-year career on the field, and has been working ever since as a player agent. He's found himself these days outing self-proclaiming hitting gurus and their unusual drills, many of them costing parents and players a pretty penny for the quirky instruction.

Frye covered his careers on and off the field, and revealed the genesis of becoming the actual Certified Hitting Guru (that's his Instagram handle!). There was also some talk about the great Nomar Garciaparra, among other players, plus a recap of Frye's accomplishments on the field.

Diehard Dads became a three-man segment for this one, as our guest joined Riz & Dawg with a good story about one of his sons.

Dawg presented Veteran of the Day. It was Frye's good friend, Colonel (retired) J. Craig Flowers. Flowers served as a military intelligence officer, specializing in human intelligence. His 25 years in the US Army included a decade overseas, including three years in Morocco and 10 years in direct support of the special operations community. His final military assignment was at West Point, where he served as senior staff officer, Director of Cadet Affairs and Assistant Baseball Coach.

Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy worked the baseball angles coming out of Super Bowl 55, in which Tom Brady claimed his seventh title, defeating Patrick Mahomes in the quarterback battle. There are a lot of baseball ties the guys uncovered, aside from the obvious about Mahomes' father being a former MLB pitcher.

Who else is elite? Trevor Bauer is ... at least his contract says so. It was not just Bauer changing addresses, though, as Riz & Dawg analyzed the A's-Rangers trade, and the re-signings of Yadier Molina to the Cardinals and Marcell Ozuna to the Braves, respectively. Dawg dug deeper into the contract numbers and what they mean today and in the future for the way teams do business, using Bauer and D.J. LeMahieu, along with Ozuna, as examples.

Diehard Dads gave Riz a chance to vent about ordering food for the family, and somehow producer Xavier Rizzo became the hero of the segment.

Dawg presented Veteran of the Day. With a nod to Black History Month, it was Hall of Famer Louis “Big Bertha” Santop, the first Negro League superstar. Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy jumped on as Trevor Bauer, the biggest fish in the free agency pool, narrowed down his decision to two teams, believed to be Dawg's Mets and the World Series champion Dodgers. They went late-night on the East Coast in hopes that the news would break while they were streaming live on the Facebook Group.

The guys broke down what the Twitter stream was saying about Bob Nightengale as things were happening, and Riz gave the scenario where a mystery team would come in at the 11th hour and possibly steal away the prized pitcher. Dawg simply wants Bauer with the Mets, which also would give Riz a win for calling it before the off-season.

Diehard Dads uncovered how Dawg is suddenly a single dad, but you'll have to listen to the last part of the show to find out the details. Riz lamented about his steam shower.

Dawg presented Veteran of the Day. With a nod to Black History Month, it was the Secretary of Defense, Garry Maddox. Maddox joined the Army after getting drafted by the San Francisco Giants, with whom he had a contract dispute about rookie ball pay. After basic training, he volunteered for Vietnam, where he served.

Diehard Dads was a huge segment, as Riz & Dawg lamented about clearing the two feet of snow, while Riz added a classic story of how snow shoveling and a conversation with his father ended up in a broken phone.

Bumbry, an outfielder for the Orioles and Padres from 1972-85 and the '73 Rookie of the Year, served as a platoon leader in the US Army from July 1969-July 1971, earning a Bronze Star for heroism for his service in Vietnam. This show was on the night where the Hall of Fame announced its class of 2021, which included zero players and the noted absence of Curt Schilling. The guys reviewed Schilling's case and reviewed why it was adjudicated the way it has been for the past nine years where he's failed to get in.

There was the matter of current personnel, as JT Realmuto re-signed with the Phillies, and Riz & Dawg talked about what that means in baseball for finances and competitiveness. Since the previous show, there were also changes in the status of George Springer and Brad Hand, plus the Mets' firing of Jared Porter.

Diamond Dads was a mixed bag near the end of the show, and it got a new name: Diehard Dads, which Dawg kept calling it, anyway, and Riz called it in the description of the previous show (you can look it up - and also subscribe and listen while you're doing so).
