  • DBE 023: Embracing the Financial Side of Business with Shannon Weinstein

    In This Episode:

Do the words 'bookkeeping' and 'tax season' make you cringe? Jess is interviewing CPA and host of the Keep What You Earn podcast, Shannon Weinstein, and making the dread-filled topic of business finances an approachable one.

Jess dubs Shannon as the "Queen of Grit," and as the episode starts it is no wonder why as Shannon dives into her journey of how she became an accountant, the influence her father had on her growing up, and then– when her father passed away, the grit it took to choose whatever path she wanted to pursue.

Rounding out the episode, Shannon talks in depth about the importance of our finances as entrepreneurs saying, "it's never too early" to make sound financial decisions when it comes to our businesses. In fact, financial knowledge is power, because with it we are able to notice patterns and trends that inform decisions we can make to further the success of our business.

As always, cheers to your evolution!

    Key Takeaways:

    • Knowing the financial side of business is something that is necessary as the business owner. It is the foundation that supports everything else, including any employees or customers.
    • Finances do not have to be scary or anxiety-inducing. Especially if you take the time to invest in your business and partner with finance professionals.
    • The glamorous side of being an entrepreneur we all see on social media can be very misleading. When it comes to write-offs or how much money someone is bringing in, we have to realize that these are basically commercials that are designed to showcase the best-case scenario– there is context and nuance that must be acknowledged.

  • DBE 016: Cross Country Life Update with Mike

In this episode, Mike and Jess are coming at you from Austin, TX where they discuss all things about their cross-country shenanigans as well as give us some useful glimpses into their decision-making process. It comes down to intentionally planning what you want out of life and then doing what is needed to get there. Loving the autonomy and freedom that comes with their remote business lifestyle, the couple loves the home base they have found in Scottsdale, AZ but have decided to also call New Jersey home once again as well.

We are all people outside of our businesses, and Mike and Jess give us an empowering example of how they use their business to get the best that life has to offer. Mike hints throughout the episode that you have to try different things out to feel what is right for you. Once Mike and Jess made the admittedly quick decision to move back, they debated on whether or not to get a house or an apartment and explain why they ultimately went with one over the other.

The episode finishes strong as Mike and Jess get vulnerable with us by explaining why this all matters. Why did they choose to do this? After all, it wasn't just on a whim. Jess explains that we all have a carrot that we're chasing. If you are on a fitness journey, your carrot may be a vanity metric to tone your arms. Likewise, if you are in business, your carrot may be to make money. There is nothing wrong with that, as Mike and Jess point out that is the same carrot that has afforded them the opportunities they talk about with us today. Now, the carrot has changed a bit and has become more intrinsic– to make memories with friends and family through the freedom and autonomy their business provides. Mike challenges us all with a worthwhile goal that this whole episode embodies, "Have crazy, stupid goals."

As always, cheers to your evolution!

    Episode Quotes

    • "You don't know what life is going to look like, but it's so important to put [your goal] out there." –Mike DeRose

  • DBE 015: The Power of In-Person Events

In this episode, Jess is talking all things related to the importance and impact of how attending in-person events can shape us as individuals, coaches, and entrepreneurs.

Imagine walking into the auditorium for the first time of a conference you are attending. Do you hear the buzz of the crowd? The thumping of any music? Do you see vendor stalls that have groups of like-minded people that share your passion surrounding them? This is the palpable energy Jess brings to our attention first. An energy that is contagious and fuels your fire to commit to growth for you as a person and your business. This energy is the catalyst that propels you to meaningful conversations and connections.

When making these connections with other entrepreneurs, you are giving them and yourself an opportunity. It is an opportunity to be validated. Let's face it, not everyone in our lives understands the roller coaster that is entrepreneurship. But, when you are in attendance at such events, you get to meet people that understand your struggles and know the importance of celebrating your wins. As Jess explains, everyone that is attending that live event has made an investment in themselves– they want those same conversations that force growth and change and drive out complacency.

Finally, Jess gives us a call to action. If you are craving an event and notice that it does not exist– go create it. Bring your idea to fruition and run with it.

  • DBE 014: 5 Truths About Working With Your Spouse
In this episode, the DBE duo of Mike and Jess are back and discussing five lessons they have learned that answer the question they get most often as husband and wife– How the heck do you two work together?

Setting boundaries and communication are the first two lessons that Mike and Jess discuss. Jess paints a picture that communication sets the foundation for any relationship, whether business or personal. Then, once you set that foundation, you have to check on it to make sure that it does not have any cracks as time passes– meaning that it is an ongoing process rather than one and done. Communication supports the next lesson shared of setting boundaries with one another. Being husband and wife, Mike and Jess learned that not only do they have to set those boundaries, but when it comes time, those boundaries have to be honored.

Mike and Jess then discuss the importance of an aligned bigger vision. The two compare how those may be different for partnered teams that work together as well. While your aligned vision as a couple might be to get married one day, in business they may differ. The key is to support your partner to help them achieve their goal.

The final two lessons that Mike and Jess share start with an awareness of shifting from the work day to being husband and wife. When the work day is over, there is a shift in energy to enjoy each other's company. This leads to the last topic the two share of being intentional about the time they spend together. Just because time is set aside, or scheduled, does not make it any less special or important. There has to be a balance between the working dynamic and home life.

As always, cheers to your evolution!

    Episode Quotes

    • "We are only speaking from experience. It has definitely taken time. It is a practice of patience and we are consistently learning, growing, and evolving– both personally and together." –Jessica DeRose
    • "If you don't have a close personality to the person that you're with, you're doomed? No. What it means is it empowers you to understand how the other person thinks and to understand how the other person operates." –Mike DeRose
