Hoi lieve Dipsausers, still hanging in there?

These are frightening and for some of us lonely times. Most of us are having to deal with social distancing, isolation in these coronatimes. But Dipsaus to the rescue! Last January the 25th edition of Writers Unlimited festival took place in The Hague and one of the editorial members was our very own Ebissé. One of the conversations Ebissé organized was about to what extent has African literature been able to wrest itself free of linguistic colonization? And what about other languages? Can the predominance of English still be stopped, or is it a lost cause? Liberian-Dutch writer and poet Vamba Sherif discusses the issue with American-Kenyan writer, poet, university lecturer in English and activist Mukoma Wa Ngũgĩ and with Ellah Wakatama, Editor-at-Large of Scottish publishing firm Cannongate Books. She is also a senior Research Fellow at Manchester University and Chair

Heard but not seen. The gentrification of Black music and the whitewashing of dance music history have created spaces which are codified as white, that is, spaces in which Blackness is heard, but not seen. The Black roots of dance music genres such as House and Techno have been progressively phased out. Capitalist enterprises have promoted a form of white hedonism which favours instant gratification over community building, preying on partygoers’ inherent desire to experience a sense of belonging. Recent efforts have been made not only to understand neocolonialism within the dance music industry, but also reclaim spaces from institutions which have been othering and commodifying Black bodies for far too long. This special Dipsaus episode will focus on the decolonisation of dance music, and within this context, we will discuss the possibilities for global solidarity and Black togetherness within the context of dance music and its ecosystem.
This will be a collaboration between Dipsaus Podcast and Dance With Pride and continuation of Diasporic Self: Black Togetherness as Lingua Franca.

Wie is onze Valentijn?
Oh, en Dipsaus wants to bring mix-tapes back! 📼

Blue Monday is voorbij!!!

Ebissé started watching HBO's acclaimed series Watchmen when it came out mid October of last year and was completely blown away. With no prior knowledge regarding the source material, she dived into the series completely clueless and found it to be literally and figuratively otherworldly!
So she went on twitter to vent/discuss and only a handful of people on her TL happened to watch alongside her, one of them being Dr. Mathys. He was kind and patient enough to provide her with so much insight and necessary background info into series, that she decided to record a session discussing the various themes, particularities & problematic tropes as soon as the series ended.
It was also important to us (Dipsaus) that we had this talk with a black person as racism, racial politics and the current Black Lives Movement play a crucial role in this series. Watchmen is one of the many television shows and films that are coming out of Hollywood riding the BLM movement: for good or bad… like Dear White People, She's Gotta Have It, Queen & Slim, Seven Seconds etc.
We also asked Mathys to compile an exclusive playlist for us consisitng of songs relating to his mood whilst he was watching the acclaimed HBO series Watchmen. Listen to Dr. Mathys' Watching Watchmen Playlist
