In Episode 225, I re-invigorate the reviewing of disabled films and rename it Great Flix & Joysticks.   On the episode today, I review Hulu’s offering, a movie called “Run”, highlighting a disabled teen and her overbearing and scary mother.  In this movie we see a real life disabled person in the role as a disabled person.  We explore how disability is used in this film to create an important representation in the horror / thriller genre.  We stan queens Sarah Paulson and actual disabled newcomer Kiera Allen.  This film is a game changer and can be accessed on HULU in the US.

Happy solstice! They’re the four best friends anyone could have. On the last Crip Times episode of 2020, all three hosts (Kayla, Kristina, Yousef) are joined by Jess Watkin, an artist, activist, academic, dramaturg, and most importantly, friend of the pod. 

We spend some time laughing about how we all became friends through our various crip encounters, access intimacy, and what Jess’ work as an artist and disability dramaturg actually entails. Jess speaks about her upcoming projects, and the legacies of interdependence that brought her to the place she is today. In Episode 221, I sit down with three people in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada who share with us the dismal disability housing options in Halifax forcing disabled people to live in seniors homes or institutions.  April tells us about how she was also put in an institution after having a routine procedure in hospital, and how she feels less than human.  Vicky talks about her experiences living in an institution since she was 21, and Andrew highlights his struggles with inaccessible housing and how it impacts him every single day.   Each story from April, Andrew and Vicky highlights how they feel trapped within a system that does not care about them.  I wanted to shine a huge light on this story today!
