Tara Leigh Calico is an American woman who vanished near her residence in Belen, New Mexico, on September 20, 1988. It is widely suspected that she was abducted. In July 1989, a Polaroid image featuring an unidentified young woman and a boy, both appearing to be gagged and restrained, was broadcast to the public after being discovered in a convenience store parking lot in Port St. Joe, Florida.
Friends of the family believed the woman bore a resemblance to Calico and reached out to her mother, who subsequently met with investigators to review the Polaroid. After considering factors such as time, growth, and lack of makeup, she became convinced that the woman was her daughter, particularly noting that a scar on the woman's leg matched one that Calico had.
Scotland Yard conducted an analysis of the photograph and determined that the woman was indeed Calico; however, a subsequent examination by the Los Alamos National Laboratory reached a different conclusion. An analysis performed by the FBI yielded inconclusive results.
