  • Preparedness and Planning for 2020 Winter XGames with Kyle Nelson
In this week’s episode, we chat with our regular dispatcher and disaster weather expert, Kyle Nelson. Kyle fulfilled several roles covering the response aspects of the 2020 Winter X-Games in Aspen, Colorado.
He shares a look behind the scenes on preplanning for the event that brings an additional 100,000 people into a county that has fewer than 30,000 year-round residents. This puts a strain on all aspects of the first responder community and requires planning and partnerships with other local, state, and federal resources to pull off.
Also on the show this week are co-hosts Sam Bradley, and Jamie Davis, along with Becky DePodwin.

  • Coronavirus Update and a Look a Weather Conferences and Disasters
In this week’s episode, we cover a couple of topics. First we chat with Dr. Joe Holley about the recent coronavirus outbreak and its spread worldwide. The podcast crew covers the need to seek out reliable information. We also talk about the need for health professionals and all emergency response persons to be sources of high quality and up-to-date information on the outbreak.
The best source for people inside the U.S. is with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). They have a dedicated series of pages for all the relevant information on the coronavirus outbreak with information for the public, for healthcare professionals, and public health teams. Make sure you head over and check it out at the link above.
After our extensive discussion about the viral outbreak, we shift gears and bring in meteorologist and emergency management expert, Becky DePodwin. Becky chats about her frequent attendance of weather-related professional conferences. She focuses on the increased awareness of meteorologists about weather disasters and the impact of forecasts on response and public reaction.
Also on the show this week are co-hosts Sam Bradley, and Jamie Davis.

  • Negative Intrathorascic Pressure CPR Airway Research
Dr. Joe Holley and his co-author Dr. Johanna C. Moore joined the podcast for this episode to talk about their recently published research on the effectiveness of various supraglottic airway devices during CPR. Specifically, the study looked how well the various devices maintained an airtight seal to develop negative intrathoracic pressure when using an impedance threshold device during ventilation.
We discuss the methods and process used during the study, the specific devices reviewed, and the final results and conclusions for the various supraglottic airway devices. The two doctors also discuss the challenges bringing the findings of CPR research down to the street level and implementing change in patient care during sudden cardiac arrest.

  • Talking Stress Injury with Critical Incident Expert Dan McGuire
We brought back Dan McGuire from CISM Perspectives to talk about updates to the ways work-related stress for first responders is handled. The biggest change Dan noted was a focus on building resiliency into initial first responder education and ongoing training before the critical incident occurs.
One of the biggest changes Dan advocates for is to change the name from “Stress Disorder” to “Stress Injury.” This removes the stigma of a disorder and helps responders relate to the possibility of long-term injury in response to work-related stress.
On the show this week are co-hosts Sam Bradley, disaster weather expert, Kyle Nelson, Dr. Joe Holley, and Jamie Davis.

  • Disaster Podcast Team Looks Forward to New and Exciting Topics in 2020
It’s been a great year of podcasts here at the Disaster Podcast. In this episode (part 3 of 3), the whole team comes by to talk about their picks for top topics to cover in 2020. We have Dr. Joe Holley, meteorologist and emergency dispatcher Kyle Nelson, meteorologist and emergency management expert Becky DePodwin, podcast co-host and paramedic Sam Bradley, and Jamie Davis, the Podmedic.
Dr. Joe Holley’s picks for 2020 Topics:

“More law enforcement involvement.  Lets also get some of my Military Special Operators on to cover the uniqueness of what they do and how they train, and perhaps interview more physician leaders in EMS, Wilderness, and disaster.”

Becky DePodwin’s picks for 2020 Topics:
“Volcanoes and response to eruptions. Thinking of the incident this week, where a cruise ship expedition was going on when an eruptions occured in New Zealand. Still people missing, I believe.”
“How tourism fits into disaster prep and response. How do you handle people who aren’t familiar with an area, the potential risks, or evac routes, etc.”
Kyle Nelson’s picks for 2020 Topics:

“Continued innovation. Technologies, ideas and unique disaster & medical operations globally that disrupt the norm (tools, techniques, plans) of today’s disaster response. We can highlight what the future of disaster response may look like as well as real-life challenges/successes of such responses.”

“Responder education. As the complexity of disaster response continues to evolve, so does the skill sets required of disaster responders. What interdisciplinary skill sets are being taught, what gaps exist, and how is that projected to evolve into the future.”

Jamie Davis’s picks for 2020 Topics:
“I’d like to see us focus on how technology can be better leveraged for preparedness and response (weather modeling, drones for recon, apps for volunteers, logistics tools)”
Come back next week for the first episode of the year 2020 on the Disaster Podcast. It’s going to kick things off with a focus on responder wellness.

  • The Pending Demise of Many Rural EMS Services
On this episode we invited Andy Gienapp, MS, NRP, Manager of the Office of Emergency Medical Services, Health Readiness and Response Section, Public Health Division, Wyoming Department of Health. We invited Andy on to discuss the potential demise of many rural EMS services mostly staffed by volunteers.
Not only are there fewer volunteers available, but call volume and expense of maintaining certifications and training have all created an issue across the U.S. in rural even suburban EMS services. The problem will likely get worse before it gets better and the public outcry will be ugly when the tipping point is reached.

  • Revisiting the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure and Design SAFE-CI Program
On this episode we bring you a blast from the past. As I mentioned last week, the Disaster Podcast team is either all traveling, working, or in the process of moving and we struggled to get together for a new episode, let alone two for last week and this one. So we will bring you an episode of relevant content from the past 7 years on the show.
We got a lot of response from our recent episode with Daniel Zehner from the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) on Hurricane Dorian and construction resilience in the face of powerful storms like that. In light of that, here’s the very first episode we did with Daniel about the NHERI program and research that you might find very interesting. Enjoy!
Daniel Zehner from the DesignSafe Radio podcast joins us on the Disaster Podcast this week. He highlights the research opportunities at NHERI for the major hazard areas they look into: wind, earthquakes, tsunami, coastal erosion, and rapid response after events.  His podcast program focuses on the important work of the team at the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI). NHERI is committed to making sure the next natural hazard doesn’t have to be a disaster for you and your family.
