    This is a special extra episode on the upcoming landfall of Hurricane Florence which will impact the U.S. East Coast in the region of North and South Carolina sometime Friday, September 14, 2018. We brought on disaster weather expert Becky DePodwin to talk about the weather outlook and potential hazards from the storm.
    Sam relayed an update from a conversation she had with Dr. Joe Holley who is deployed with the IST (Incident Support Team) to a forward location east of Raleigh, NC. He and the other federal assets are getting in position to assist state and local authorities and responders when the areas of greatest need are identified after landfall.

  • Mountain Rescue with Wilderness PA James Corbin part 1
    We talk about the various needs of international mountain rescue with Physician’s Assistant and Paramedic James Corbin. He’s a longtime listener who reached out to us to suggest a topic for the call. He began his EMS career as a volunteer EMT and paramedic in Wheaton, Maryland before heading off to learn about rock climbing and joining the Shenandoah Mountain Rescue Group in Virginia’s Shenandoah and Allegheny Mountains.
    He later started traveling to other locations, taking his passion for rock climbing, rescue, wilderness EMS with him on the way. He took that training to Arizona and later Palau, Micronesia before most recently settling in Contanu, Benin in West Africa.

  • CPR Airway Management Research with Dr. Joe Holley

    On this episode, we bring back Dr. Joe Holley to talk some more about the groundbreaking research he’s been involved with on airway management in cardiac arrest. He and the team he was working with looked at the effects of different types of airway management to maintain an intrathoracic vacuum during CPR to facilitate better blood flow into the brain.
    We talked about the methodology of the study and the challenges involved with narrowing down the types of variables in the study to make it more effective from a data collection standpoint.

  • Thailand Cave Rescue Discussion with Cave Diver Bob Wilson
    In this very timely episode of the Disaster Podcast, we take a look at the extreme technical rescue involved in the recent Thailand cave rescue. As we rejoice that all the boys and their coach were rescued, it is time to talk about the operational aspects of what it took to pull off this rescue.
    In order to do that we brought on our water rescue expert Kevin Reiter from WildSafety.com, who also connected us with Cave Diving expert Bob Wilson, of Ocean Services Dive and Marine Consulting (OSDMC) to come on the show. They helped us understand the specific needs of diving in this constricted cave environment and how it would affect the rescue.
