    Any additional comments?
This was, hands down, THE WORST audio book I have ever listened to. I'm convinced that it was written by a 12 year old. I really don't even know where to start on how bad this book is. The serial killer story was absurd. Written like instructions: "Johnny took the gun. Johnny blew her head of. Johnny got back in the car and drove away. Johnny got to his house. Johnny went inside", etc, etc, ad nauseam. And the "Castle Drac Von Stoller" ditty - oy! - I'm not sure if it was meant to be funny but the story was ridiculous and the narrator was a riot. Between the dialog that felt like it was written by my cat, his HORRIBLE Italian accent (hint: putting an "a" at the end of every word does not an Italian accent make), and his downright hysterical "dracula" voice (think Count Chocula - and to make matters worse, the accent kept coming and going!) I wasn't sure what to laugh at first. I'm not even going to go on with the rest of the stories.... trust me, they did not get any better.
I truly hate to give such a bad review because writing a really good story is a difficult thing to do and I admire those who even have the courage to try. But I cannot, in good conscience, give this book any more than 1 star. If I may, some advice to the author - work on constructing a better story. Flush out the characters a little more. Saying everyone's name over and over again is not necessary and is incredibly annoying for the reader (you can say "Johnny walked in the room. He sat down in the chair", not "Johnny walked into the room. Johnny sat down in the chair", etc.). Save the stereotypes, they make the story seem juvenile and amateurish. If writing is your passion, then I wish you much luck in your future endeavors and I hope that your stories get better.

A rich, dark tale of a young man's struggle to understand the horrific visions of murder that have plagued his life since childhood. What he discovers is a truth so shocking it threatens to destroy him.
    Critic Reviews:
"Mark Edward Hall writes likea master. Stephen King, yes, but also like Stoker, Poe, and Bradbury, yeah, even Shakespeare.... all those good guys we've forgotten. His prose is hypnotic and seductive, visceral, and edgy. He's the real thing." (Kiana Davenport, New York Times best-selling author of Cannibal Nights and House of Skin)
"Hall has an uncanny knack for blending vivid, almost poetic prose with visceral images of jaw-dropping horror to great effect." (Bram Stoker Award-winning editor Vince Liaguno)
"Poetic and eerily seductive, Hall pushes you to the edge, until you get lostin the beautiful madness of his creations." (Midwest Book Review)
"Hall is rapidly climbing theladder to stake a claim as one of the dark fiction elite." (Morpheus Tales)

    A little twist of horror
I'm a horror story fan. And I love a good read. I got both reading Mark Edward Hall's "The Fear". The story opens with protagonist Mitch Redlon waking and knowing that the inexplicable horror he calls The Fear is back. Finding himself feverish and blood soaked, Mitch knows he must stop the recurring childhood nightmare before it destroys him.The story takes Mitch on a journey home to long hidden secrets and dark discoveries. I particularly like the good old fashioned "good vs evil" aspect but with a M.E.H. horror twist.
    Creepy
I found the story pretty creepy and a great bedtime story, for those of you who like a scare before bed.
    The Fear - Excellent!
This story gets better by the page. A sick and twisted tale of lies, betrayal, and revenge; it kept me reading and guessing, straight through to the end.
    Great read
The story focuses around a person named Mitch Redlon who has some serious issues with nightmares, night terrors and the huge scar running the length of the right side of his torso. As Redlon grew up, he was plagued with horrific nightmares. Unable to understand or explain what was happening he just called it "The Fear." It plagued him until around the time he moved out of his fortune-telling mother's home. One night (after having been free of "The Fear" for quite some time), Mitch Redlon wakes up screaming. As he fights to regain control over his emothions and "the deep rooted agony" in his scar, he realizes: "The Fear" is back with a vengeance. Unable to understand what is going on he decides to confront his mother about "The Fear." He arrives at her home to find something has brutally attacked her and she's in the hospital. The neighbor, who has known Redlon all his life, finally tells some of the answers to Redlon. Redlon then goes to the hospital to check on his mother. Redlon gets the answers, but they are not good. He goes abck to his mother's house and finally is able to confront "The Fear," but do NOT expect a happy or calm ending. I will not explain what "The Fear" is, but it was not what I expected it to be. I will not tell you how the story ends other than it is soemwhat gruesome and macabre.
Once I started the story I had to read it straight through. I am glad I did.

    Okay, but disappointed
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the storyline, but the characters were left without any real definition. Hard to follow at times. But listened to the end.
What does Gerry O'Brien bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Emotion
    Annoying and uninteresting
The narrator has an annoying tone. Every new character has a higher pitched Irish voice which becomes grating. Little happens throughout the book due to the large amount of characters introduced. If you can get over the narrator's voice then all you are left with are a load of irritating characters that hold little connection to the reader.
    Poorly written, re-hashed rubbish
I love a good zombie yarn, but this neither has anything new, nor does it do the old routines well. It plods through an unengaging setup, into a directionless main plot utilising adverb, simile and cliché in repeating sequences. The reading is poor too, giving the exact opposite intonation than is described (if it says "he said, deadpan", then say it deadpan). Very disappointing.

    Outstanding Story
After reading Carl East's short storyForever Young, I wrote a review encouraging Carl to continue to write stories like that one as I thought it was very good. While that is not unusual to say you like something in a book review, it is when you put Carl East in context: he is a very prolific, and apparently successful, writer of erotic (to put it nicely) titles. I speculated Carl could sell a gajillion - that is a word, according to my kids - copies of novels along the Forever Young format if he gave it a try.
Carl replied back to my above-mentioned review, and encouraged me to give this book a try, and I am glad he did. If you think about the short story concept, an author has to be really good in a short story due to the limited amount of words to set the stage of the story, get you introduced to the characters, keep your interest, then drive it home with a conclusion vs. 100,000+ words in a full-length novel.
Carl nailed it on this one - I could really visualize Carl's concept of Hell, the Devil, his minions, and the souls in Hell, then he drove home his message at the end and had me wishing there were other titles along similar lines by Carl East I could read. This was a really good story that had me thinking in life: have I done what I need to do in order to be in Heaven, or will I spend an eternity on one of the "levels" Carl describes?
This was a pretty deep short story and way out in left field for my stereotype vision of a writer of porno titles, which makes me wonder: is there something repressed in Carl East wanting to escape? I don't know, but I hope so.
So, to sum it all up - Carl, you've written yet another very good story that proves (a) you're a pretty good writer, and (b) you can write successfully in another genre. How about putting those skills to the test and writing a full-length non-erotic novel along the lines of Forever Young and To Hell and Back? I'd buy it, and I'd be willing to bet many others will, too.

    Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook Includes the novelette The Haunting of Victor Drahos at the end!
Something in Lavender, California is waking up. Rituals not properly completed for centuries are coming together. Nothing is what it seems.
When Nick Leatherman, his girlfriend Ruthie, and their buddies Flash and Weasel invade Shady Grove Cemetery for a "ghost hunt" on their way home from a concert, they are drawn into a web of darkness and intrigue that threatens to consume them. Nick and Ruthie witness a gruesome murder, and Nick's pocket knife shows up at the crime scene the next morning. Nick has had problems in the past, and Inspector Kendall Straker remembers. He remembers Ned Leatherman, Nick's alcoholic step-father as well, and he doesn't believe the boy is a killer. The problem is that the knife - emblazoned with the name of the band Maelstrom - is the only clue he has.
Horace Goldbough is the local pastor. He's built a huge following and a beautiful church, but there are things about the good reverend that the town doesn't know. In particular there is his relationship with a dark woman named Beauchane, and a certain book he keeps hidden from the world.
With local reporters, and a television talk-show host hounding his every step, Straker attempts to unravel the series of grisly killings terrorizing Lavender, while simultaneously protecting Nick. Nick, in the meantime, has begun his own investigation, feeling trapped and needing to clear his name.
Ritual words are being spoken, and a power that has been denied access to the Earth for centuries is poised to strike. The clock is ticking. Can Straker, Nick, and Maelstrom find the answer to the killings and put an end to them before the final ritual takes place, or will a horror be unleashed on the unsuspecting town of Lavender beyond their comprehension?

    Fantastic Book
Where does Maelstrom rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It pulls you in where you can actually see in your mind what Nick (the main character) sees and feels. This is going to be a reread!
What about Eric G. Doves performance did you like?
The man can really tell a story! Fantastic!
Who was the most memorable character of Maelstrom and why?
Nick (of course) because many thing he is going through (feelings. The feeling of being at a concert. Not the drugs though.) brings many memories back.
    Any additional comments?
Will definitely be telling my friends about this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Brianna Forte is made executor of the Clerkwells' estate, she thinks it'll be a simple task to catalogue and liquidate their assets. After all, they lived very modestly, their only apparent interest in life being a large collection of eerily lifelike little figurines called Timeless Innocents.
Exquisitely crafted yet somehow ominously creepy, the figurines are all different and made of some hard, fleshlike material. When a parade of sinister characters turn up demanding she sell them the figures, Brianna begins to investigate their origin - and what she learns will change her life forever....

As if knick-knacks weren't creepy enough...
As if knick-knacks weren't creepy enough... Now there's a book about them too. My review copy of Timeless Innocents was graciously provided by the good folks at Carina Press.
Timeless Innocents. Even the name is vaguely creepy, in that way that all collectibles seem to be. There's always been something just a little off-putting about seeing shelves upon shelves of tiny little people staring back at me. Now I know why. They really are horrid little things - and not just because it takes forever to dust them.
Janis Susan May's novella is a fanciful romp into the dark world of collectibles - and the obsession that underlies the act of collecting. Her version - Timeless Innocents - starts out banal enough. A lawyer is brought in to catalog the collection of a couple that recently died. Things don't stay banal for long though, as our fearless heroine spends time in the house with the tiny statues (which, personally, I picture as Precious Moments blended with Hummel figurines - if they were designed by Neil Gaiman).
There are a few deviations here and there, but the story offers up pretty standard fare. The spunky young lawyer living in her dad's shadow. The "parade of sinister characters" (quote from the book blurb) all with eerily obsessive interest in the figurines. Mysterious deaths. Noises when your back is turned. An ending that you shouldn't see coming but somehow do anyway.
It's not a bad little read at all. But it's not exactly edge-of-your-seat thriller-ness either. There's something comfortable about the story - you can see what is coming a mile away, but yet it still gives you a goosebump or two every now and again. While it didn't scare me to the point that I had to put it down, I also wouldn't have read it while home alone. It's a pleasant way to spend 99 cents (on kindle) and however long it takes you to read about 25,000/so words - if your idea of pleasant leans toward the designed-by-Neil-Gaiman end of the spectrum.
    A quick read...but not scary!
This was an enjoyable book that passed away a few hours. But, that was all it was. I didn't jump, I wasn't scared--I did not show any sign I was reading a horror book. This wasn't of any fault to Janis Susan May, however, it was merely the fact that this novella was very similar to the usual movie thriller. Yes, I didn't find it to be of the horror genre because usually a lot more happens and many people die but this was a thriller because everything was more or less resolved by the end and it just kept you on your toes, waiting for something to happen throughout.
The first 'horrifying' thing happened at 48% of the book. That's how slow it was.

    Publisher's Summary:
Kurt Hauptmann will learn to make stained glass to help men see the glory of God, one of the many bizarre heritages handed down from his ancestry. But the family has other, more frightening secrets. The path to God runs through darkness as well as light. And the bond of a family is blood, its own and that of its enemies.
What is the strangeness in Uncle Detlef, head of the stained-glass studio? Why has he descended from his cathedral roofs to steeplejack the perils of a secular world? What are his secrets? Why do the family's holy rites seem perverse?
Most of all, why are men getting killed in bizarre, archaic ways here in South Florida?
As Kurt gropes toward the truth, so does the tough and cynical cop, Jack Skelote. What lies before them is a limbo of murdered martyrs, unblessed, unholy, and unburied.

    Ancient Secrets and top-notch narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Bob Walter has the kind of voice that I put on a short list of those who - as narrator - could influence me to listen to a book I might otherwise have ignored. The story is rich and complex and the characters are vivid.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martyring?
Without giving anything away, I would have to cite the scenes where the protagonist and his cousin interact closely.
Which character as performed by Bob Walter was your favorite?
    The Detective
If you could rename The Martyring, what would you call it?
    Bloodstained Glass
    Any additional comments?
This book tells one of those rare stories that tightrope-walks between genres. It is a mystery. It is a thriller. It has historical aspects, and a bit of romance. It brings things like the art of creating stained glass, and the deaths of martyrs into focus for the reader. In a word? Memorable
    An interesting work poorly narrated.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This work appeals on several levels, mixing historical details and the suspense the of a modern thriller.
Would you be willing to try another one of Bob Walters performances?
Bob Walters narrates this work with a repetitive, monotonous rhythm and intonation. He forces the text into this odd and annoying cadence instead of letting the work determine the beat and tone. The effect is distracting and makes it difficult to absorb or become absorbed in the story. This work deserves better. I will avoid this narrator in the future.

The Summerville Plantation was full of joy and happiness until one day when little Billy Edwards was found dead in the attic. Everyone that resides in the Plantation was questioned about poor little Billy Edwards' death, but no one seemed too eager to talk about his death.
The groundskeeper claimed there was a ghost in the attic that killed Billy Edwards with an axe.
Billy's father, Jim, questioned Sam Tucker the grounds keeper about his son's death. Sam insisted a ghost killed his son.
Jim replied, "Sam, what do you mean a ghost killed my son?"
"If you're so hell bent on knowing the truth. I'll tell you how it all began. This story dates as far back as the Civil War. Ben Coates was a dashing Yankee General who was in love with one of the slave women named Lucy at the Summerville Plantation. They knew their love was forbidden and if anyone found out they would both be shot. Well guess what they both were in the attic making passionate love when the owner Jack Bullard of the plantation came in on them and in a jealous rage killed them both with two shots to the head. Jack was in love with his slave Lucy and when he seen the two together he lost control. Then a panic-stricken Jack knew he was dead if the Yankee soldiers found their heneral dead in his attic. So Jack took an axe and gave his slave Lucy and the Yankee heneral forty whacks then dismembered their bodies with the axe. The bodies were placed underneath the floor boards of the attic. Never to be seen or heard from again. So it seemed. These two love birds aren't the only ghosts haunting this plantation."

    All Description and Narration
Doesn't know grammar. Doesn't characterize. Not a book. Way too short. Glad it was free. Not worth buying. This person does not know how to write with vivid action and it's just narration and description. Disappointed.
    Amateurish
This is the second story I have tried by the same author. They are of similar quality with no suspense or surprises. It is as if Jack Webb's deadpan Sergeant Friday recounted the events. I am reminded of a commentary on Lewis' THE MONK, in which the author said that Lewis seemed to think that the mere appearance of ghosts & such was enough to frighten the reader. Therefore suspense & mystery were not needed. Off topic, the last chapter of the monk would make a fine short story, the rest is pretty dreary.
    That's more like it
That's more like it! Let's head to Summerville Plantation folks. This hit the spot, a little weird and odd, but interesting.
    Great intro
    So far so good
The intro is a captivating catch to read the rest of story. It will leave ya spooked
I would give this a zero if I could
There is no book. I bought this book for 99cents. I downloaded it and the book only consisted of the description. Amazon did take care of this for me, I got a refund. It should be taken off of kindle store because there is no book.

Sir Jonathan Wellington, the owner of the castle, would make sure everyone at the party had plenty to drink and a good time with dancing and loud music to cover up the screams down in his chamber of horrors, because he didn't want anyone at the party to suspect a thing.
