Loads of terrifying horror

I LOVED this book! In fact I've reread this book a few times, The thing that drew me to this particular book was the plot of flooding a valley to make a reservoir. I've always been interested in how that is done. Add on top of that the horror aspect and I was hooked. Michael R. Collings captures moments of horror that would absolutely terrified were I in the heroine Lila's shoes. It hit all the right notes for me. Lots of interesting provenance to the story that brings it all together in the end.

Borderline interesting

I usually like Michael Colling's books but this one is hard to get thru. Much of it doesn't make sense and his descriptions are so colorfully over-involved that I lose track of what's happening at that moment because I'm trying to decipher the descriptions. It drags, in my humble opion.

Confusing!

As I read this book, I got so disgusted that there was nothing happening other than the vague explanations that the author gives. I kept waiting for the climax but this book did not deliver!

Suspenseful, fun horror tale!

Interesting twist on a haunted house story - a little bit conventional - and a little bit Twilight Zone... A quick-paced suspenseful read!

Very disappointing book

After all the hype it turned out to be very below average. I was not impressed with it at all.

What did you like best about Harlan? What did you like least?

The reader was very good. The story was nice just a little too juvenile for my taste. It would be a great read for a teenager.

What was most disappointing about David Whitmans story?

It really went nowhere. From the synopsis I thought there would be a lot of tension and conflict, but even the serial killer aspect of the plot left me flat. Really, just nothing happened. It continued exactly as it opened - the diary ramblings of a depressed angst-ridden teenage boy.

Which character as performed by Tim Campbell was your favorite?

Harlan. Tim Campbell has a great voice. If it were not for him I probably would have stopped listening after chapter 5.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No. Maybe when I was 16.

I did not expect that listening to a story about a suicidal teen could be so compelling. The character grew on me as the story unfolded. The narration was very fine. A well told story.

Valueable for Any Lovecraft Fan

While this story wouldn't be the entry I'd recommend to Lovecraft, it is definitely one of his major works. And this edition is worth reading for the beginning and hardcore fan.

The editors' introduction details how long Lovecraft had been considering this story, his inspirations, and how he, as before in his great creative year of 1927, undertook a reading program to sharpen his style and improve his writing before starting it, his most science-fictional, tale. They also offer some intriguing observations about the specific dates in protagonist Peaslee's life and their significance to Lovecraft's.

As to the annotations, it's not the largely unnecessary vocabulary lessons that Joshi and Schultz offer that are valueable, but how they point out similarities in motifs and language to other Lovecraft works, specific factual sources Lovecraft used, and the many links between this and other Cthulhu Mythos stories of Lovecraft and his friends. Even fans who have read this story more than once will probably learn something new in these notes.

I can't say as I noticed any difference between the corrected text and earlier versions of the story, but then I didn't look at the appendix showing all the textual variations. But it's there for the really hardcore Lovecraft fan and scholar.

DO NOT BUY THIS EBOOK!!!!! Give it a 1/4 star.

I bought this ebook because I love Lovecraft and I had never read this particular story before. Unfortunately, I should have bought the Halycon edition rather than this version. This version was done by some Italian company, obviously with no native English speakers on staff. This problem was made obvious in the company's introduction to the book, which was nearly incomprehensible in its broken English. This ebook looks like it was formatted using a ball peen hammer by someone heavily into drugs. One example I found particularly annoying, "building" comes out "buldmg" in some spots, and some words I figured out by the context of the sentence. There are numerous examples of these types of error on every page. Occasionally, a sentence would stop in the middle of a thought and disappear, leaving you perplexed as to what was meant. In addition, the formatting obviously was not meant for the Kindle, with sentence breaks scattered randomly so you end up with a three-word line. Perhaps they used an old OCR program, designed for Italian, to scan an English document???

It was so annoying that this is the very first ebook that I have EVER returned to Amazon.
