    Fecha de publicación: 12-17-10
    Editor: NEAR, S.A.

A Good Story At A Good Value
I enjoyed "The Tired Captain," and felt I got a good value for my money.
The story is well-written, but will probably be more enjoyable for readers familiar with the novel "Dracula," but mystery fans should like it too.
My main complaint with the story itself is that it seems a bit short. I wanted to see a little more detective work and false turns.
    The Count Meets his Match
This is the second pairing of Mr's McGregor and Davies - the first being sly murder-mystery The Long Man - with the former on writing duties, the latter narrating, and both performing sterling work. Rafe McGregor delivers another clever and audacious armchair mystery, while David Ian Davies seems to have worked his way fully into the character of the disgraced, inspired, half-mad Inspector Langham, inbuing him with a weariness and self-doubt that will seem entirely fitting to anyone who's enjoyed his first outing.
Poor Langham seems cursed to stray under the tracks of great literary creations; in The Long Man he ran afoul of Holmes and Watson, and here he finds himself investigating the wreck of The Demeter on the cliffs at Whitby - a subject that will be more than a little familiar to anyone who's read Bram Stoker's Dracula. McGregor's tale twists neatly through the novel's background, and treats Stoker both respectfully and playfully, just as he did Conan-Doyle.
This is a remarkable merging of literary homage and faux history, striking exactly the notes you'd hope for in such a tale. Well worth a purchase for fans of anyone involved, or anyone with an affection for good, old-school crime writing.
    The Mystery of the 'Demeter'!
Another fine offering from the McGregor-Davies pair. The only author I've read so far that's spotted a fairly obvious mistake in 'Dracula'...and turned it into a short story. Fans of the count and Holmes will love this one. It's also a sequel to 'The Long Man', although it can be enjoyed on it's own. Great Stuff!

And then the bottom drops out...
I think Radulski must have woken up one day and thought "What the hell is the point?" His imagination shook off its shackles and voila - here we have Devolve, a dark short story that'll probably leave you wondering the same thing Radulski did. This story is a grim, painfully vivid account of poor David who's job and life leave much to be desired. A job and life that's not uncommon today. Devolve starts at this bottom point and successfully digs deeper, sending David on a weird trek that may reveal what the future holds in a bleak extended metaphor. This is a bit of a departure from Radulski's other stories, but he pulls it off effectively with his refreshingly blunt and graphic writing style. He doesn't hold back, which may turn some folks off, but it's this brutal honesty that makes Devolve so good. As for the recording itself - the narration is clear and well read. The backing music and sound effects are tastefully done, adding a bit of flavor without dominating. Thumbs up!!
    Horrifying!
Great (if horrifying) entertainment. Radulski creates a finely nuanced character that is the essence of corporation-induced bloat and despair. And it only gets worse from there. The writing is crisp and the plot plummets inevitably to...
The audio production enhances the horror experience, which is always a plus.
I hope this novella finds a place among the Kafkas and the Vonneguts. Excellent.
    Didn't like it.
    What disappointed you about Devolve?
The readers voice was annoying. Couldn't listen to it long enough to figure out the story line.
Would you ever listen to anything by Eric A. Radulski again?
No, no, a thousand times no.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Eric A. Radulski?
    Don't know.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Why did I get it?
    Any additional comments?
    Nope.
    What the #@*^% was this?
Boy did I get taken on this one. Starts up sort of intriguing but then it turns into some sort of delirium. Have no idea what the point was. It makes no sense at all. None.

    A HORROR!
Frankly, this is the first time that I've been upset with Audible! I've been a loyal customer for over 5 years, and I'm surprised that this recording is even availabe! There is so much wasted space filled with weird electronics and cheesy horror sounds, not to mention - advertisement to the producers website between every tale! This recording is amaturish! Spend your money or credit elsewhere!
P.S. I was forced (by this software) to give it one star for which it does not deserve.
Dont buy. can even make out the dialog
These are a great disappointment. Too many sound effects and too little content.
For example, one of my all time scary stories, "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" was pretty good until it got to the climax when the dean person talks, and all the words were entirely unintelligible. The entire story, "Silence, A Fable" was also impossible to understand, I could only catch about 1 in 20 words. The poem, "El Dorado" was a few seconds of poetry and 20 minutes of sound effects. Some of the stories were good but Audible should cease selling this until the producer goes back and re-masters this.

    Avoid Purchasing!
After purchasing three hundred plus books from audible this is my first unquestionable regret. Combining a great author with an unintelligible narrator is a waste of time and money!
    Bad special effects
The narration has been layered with an echo effect that makes the performance virtually unintelligible.
Terrible Old Man is a good story & Yancy makes it
This story is very interesting and I enjoyed it very much. K. Anderson Yancy is an AWEsome narrator & his voice is absolutely perfect for my favorite genre. The rest of the Sonic Performers are corny. Mr. Yancy stands alone, basking within his own perfection.
