A lady in shimmering white says she is the immaculate conception. And Alice can suddenly hear and speak, and she can perform miracles. Soon the site of the visitation, beneath an ancient oak tree, has become a shrine, a holy place for thousands of pilgrims. But Alice is no longer the guiltless child overwhelmed by her new saintliness. She has become the agent of something corrupt, a vile force that is centuries old. Innocence and evil have become one.

Enjoyable spooky story.
Pretty good read. I enjoyed it.
It was creepy in a good way.
James Herbert can always tell a scary story with feeling. There is often a theme of redemption in his work, but he does not preach a particular morality. He has an analytical approach to human nature and his characters have flaws that make them more real. The evil that his characters face is hungry and powerful. Shrine made it feel like the world was about to collapse into the pit of Hell. If you want to read a well written chilly tale, read this book.
Can't beat a story from James Herbert!
Great book - love James Herbert.
Another excellent Herbert book
Losing James Herbert last year was sad as he is my favorite writer. You won't be disappointed in any book by him and that includes Shrine. A deaf mute, Alice, appears to be the latest to experience the vision of the Virgin. Or, does she? What exactly is happening in the field and to the town?
What a thriller
Very scary, yet fun to read.
