A drudgery to read through a great concept.

This story is in desperate need of a machete. No, not because it's great for hacking up zombies, but because there's that much that needs to be cut out, chopped up, or otherwise mutilated.

The story itself is great, and would be a five-star story in a heartbeat, except EVERYTHING and EVERYONE gets a full background before anything can happen. Here's the wife of so-and-so. Hair, height, age, background, how she happened to be here, why it's unusual. A couple pages of material. Oops! Her throat got ripped out. Next character!

Every single character gets a detailed bio before they're allowed to do much of anything. Large portions of the information are simply unneeded, because a character will be dead in a few moments. Other sections could be more effectively revealed in bits and pieces as they became relevant. The unfortunate, overall effect, is that you have a wonderful concept that should be filled with action and tension that instead slows down to a snail's pace as you try to read it. Unfortunately, I finally had to give up.

What the H*LL did I just listen to?

This was horrible. Perhaps the story may be good but I cannot tell through the narration of John Hough. I cannot even explain why. Perhaps it is the misuse and misrepresented tone he uses of each character's dialogue. As far as the story goes, it was weird and goofy. For example SPOILER.... The mother (zombie) walks in the house to be met by her daughter in law. The mother moans and writes on a piece of paper that the girl on the TV is a cheater and slut (not in those words) and then attacks the women. I actually requested my credit back. By far this is the second worse Zombie book I have listened to.

After 5 minutes I understand why no one has reviewed this book. The narrator is so horrible there is an word to describe him and the story is just too juvenile. The author and the narrator are two names I will be sure to avoid in the future.

A fun stroll through the passage to Hell

Through the In Between, Hell Awaits is a wicked tale of demons chasing each other from the In Between to Earth and back. The In Between is effectively the passage to Hell, and even though Hell is in the title, the book never actually gets there. Still, it doesn't really matter. The In Between is Hell enough.

Austin and Audrey get caught up in the impending war between rivals Baz and Dagana. Both want to rule the In Between with absolute power, but neither wants to give in to the other. Dagana in particular so desperately lusts for power that she does anything she can to get it. This includes collecting suitable humans to transform into her demon pawns. She hopes to bring an army back to the In Between to completely take over.

The story shifts between Earth and the In Between. Both have a life of their own and both are equally important to the tale. The only part that can be disorienting is the name changes as the demons move from world to world (a couple characters have at least three different names). Thankfully, there are not so many characters that you can't sort it out pretty quick.

All in all, I really dug the book. It was graphic, violent, and had a really cool feel to it. The only thing holding it back from a higher rating is no fault of the author. It's the editing. More times than I could count, I found myself wanting to grab a red pen and go to town. This is particularly unfortunate because it could have turned a good book into a great one.

Don't let that stop you from reading it though, because it really is a hell of a book. Just suppress your inner editor and enjoy the ride. It's worth it.

Good book

The author is my son so I had to read the book. I prefer romance and mystery and had never read anything like this. Also, being the parent of the author, it is a little hard to stop looking to see if what he is saying relates to real life. It did not take long to get past this. I enjoyed the book and it picked me up right away. I visualized a few of the characters, felt the minions crawling out of the back of my neck, and nearly cried. Not long into the book there was a little romance and I had to find out what happened. This is a book that women will even enjoy. I felt the fights were a little long at times but that is what they do now days. The ending of the book was very good and was not too long.

Faith is always rewarded in the end.

The Finster Effect by Wednesday Lee Friday is different from the other disaster books that I have read. The causes for the disaster will probably not surprise fans of the genre, but the way it plays out, and the voices used to share the tale are unique.

A friend cautioned me ages ago that it is a risky thing to change protagonists within a work of fiction. She was right because doing so risks losing the reader, and the point, in a discordant confusion.

But when the world ends, chaos is just what you should expect. So be prepared to wonder what the heck is going on at first. Keep going, because Ms. Friday has the mastery to pull off the shifting points of view and voices. She not only clearly differentiated between the various male and female humans, but you will hear the end of the world as observed by many species including rats, cats, and dogs as well as humans and zombies.

Your reward for persistence will be a tour of a strange and frightening world that is moving from one kind of order, perhaps to another.

The audio is crisp and clear. The reader, Nancy Linari, is a pleasure to hear. She does a wonderful job at enhancing the distinctly different voices the author created for each of the varied characters.

Faith is always rewarded in the end.

Everyone trying to hard....

It seemed like such an interesting concept, but within minutes I began to get a touch nervous. The narrator is one of those that work to speak every word clearly while also trying to "capture" her thinking of the books intent. Okay, so I can handle that except the book just veers into so many directions, with few seeming to really capture the character. The author goes into the head of everyone, from a young female to a dog to an older guy to a rat. Her focus on the condescending female felt the most real, although the dialog with her significant other make me think her relationship with men are few and far between. The dog and the Messianic rat were weird and annoying. Her attempt to get into the mind of the survivalist male was a fail. Pretty much gave up at that point.

The story jumps around too much. One minute it is from the dogs perspective then all of a sudden its the cat. A bit too confusing without an explanation. Also some weird rat religious stuff. Just weird but if you are anything like me you will give it a go because there are zombies
