End Times, A Disturbingly Different Level of Horror

Scott is a man who has lived a hard, sad life. He suffers from an addiction to heroin. He is missing all of the fingers on both ands and has to make do with only his thumbs, a fact that is disturbingly presented throughout the book. He is working as a journalist with peers who he doesn't really like and who don't like him. The only thing good in his life seems to be his friend Sebby, a quadriplegic that Scott met at a drug rehab program. Mia, a mysterious Indian girl, steps into his life and changes everything. She sees him as he is and still seems to love him. Mia becomes like a drug to his troubled mind, an addiction that he just can't quit thinking about. Everything seems to be going his way until he finds out who Mia is - a dangerous mystery from his past that has come to the present with the purpose of making him pay for what he did to her. The story follows him from his life as a bum, trying to eke out an existence on the hard city streets, to his joining a dangerous and twisted cult that required horrible sacrifices for their god, Voice, and then to his life as a writer and his journey into self-discovery and destiny. The story is written in first person and is filled with pain and longing. At first I couldn't stand the main character, his world and views being a far cry from my own, but as the novel progresses he seems to change, becoming a character that I began to relate to and sympathize with. All of the characters are created with the utmost depth, dark and believable. This book touches on all the emotions. As I read Scott's tale I felt his pain, love, hatred, longing, fear and humor.

Youers delivers a tour-de-force

With End Times, Youers delivers a tour-de-force that chills the blood, raises the pulse, plucks our emotional strings, and weaves the reader into the story with a unique voice that pushes the envelope of dark fiction. Youers does not follow trends. Nor does he rely on blood and guts to scare the reader. For the author, a scare just won't do. Due to this, many readers give thanks. This is why his work grabs you and won't let go, resonating long after you finish. His characters are real people that we can actually identify with, and most importantly, we care about them. Their emotions become our own. Dare I say you may even shed a tear... I know I sure did. That said; make no mistake, End Times is a very dark novel, indeed.

We find Scott Hennessey (A.K.A. Scott No Fingers) a scarred, yet triumphant man. Scott used to be a heroin addict that dropped out of school and lived on the streets, doing anything he could for another hit.

I really love K.w McCabe's writing.

I read the first page of Angel of Death and got serious chills. What an ominous beginning.

I'm starting to realise that this is perhaps one of the reasons why I'm loving McCabe. She packs a punch right from the beginning. I don't know if you remember that I reviewed her Sleeping Beauty Fairy Foible too and really liked her adult interpretation of that. Its sinister, dark and humorous, just my cuppa tea. You see, now that's a book with impact, one you can still clearly remember a year later.

K.w. McCabe is mainly a short story writer and i'm normally quite ambivalent about reading short stories because I tend to be unlucky with them. Most of those I've chosen previously I felt lacked follow through at times or had no real meat on them (substance) or just lacked that certain punch that hooks one to a book.

This is never the case with K.W, for me she delivers in every area. Whether she's doing her own version of a well known fairytale or conjuring up her own disturbing,entertaining and unforgettable stories. I'm always gripped for the hour or two that I spend reading her book. As I was last night with Angel of Death.

Its always find it hard to do a detailed review of a short story because its so easy to give it away but suffice to say you like great fantasy writing, this one is just the thing to transport you to millennia gone by and Lord deaths relationship with the current living. Its also helps heaps that not only does K.w come up with great story concepts but has awesome writing skills that deliver great unforgettable lines.

This was a lovely, easy read for a Saturday night in for me. Loved it.

Well Conceived, Interesting Story

I'd resolved to find something different to read and happened upon K.W. McCabe's "Choices" short via another author whom I follow on Twitter. Zipping through that tale left me intrigued, so I picked up "Dreams Both Real And Strange II" to continue with both that story line and peruse some of McCabe's other offerings. Upon finding that I enjoyed every short in said collection, I quickly procured "Angel Of Death" so that I could learn more of what became of Thomas. Though dark and brooding, Thomas is a character with an abiding sense of decency and honor; qualities which evince themselves often throughout the narrative. Forces of life and death, light and dark all collide in a way that is thoughtful as opposed to gory.

Over too quickly

Why must the short stories be so short?!? Each one fires the imagination and leaves you both satisfied, yet wanting more.

If Hollywood had this guy writing movie scripts, I'd go to the theater MUCH more than I do now.

Contemplations of Dinner.

Great set of short stories here. Maybe one stinker out of the whole bunch! It's funny, but before I bought my Kindle and started getting books from Amazon I never really liked short stories. I can't say that any longer and it's Authors like Mr. Beyers here that have changed my mind. These shorts run the whole gamet. Yep, I'd recommend this book and author.

are you ready for the bejeezus to be scared out of you?

Contemplations of Dinner is a collection of short stories that will scare the living bejeezus out of you! I've watched what seems like hundreds of horror movies so I'm pretty well desensitized. It takes a lot to scare me, and it's rare when a book gives me the kind of scares that a really really well done horror flick can do. This is one of those rare books.

Some of the scenes in certain stories were ones I had to read twice because I couldn't believe what I had just read! It would be something so deliciously evil that I needed to take a moment and soak it in. Then I began thinking maybe I'm not as desensitized to scares as I thought I was.

I wondered why this book was titled Contemplations of Dinner, and you'll be shocked once you read it and find out why for yourself. This is a perfect book to pick up and read this time of year when Halloween is quickly approaching, and I highly recommend this collection to any and every horror fan.

10 Quick, Querky Thrilling Reads

I was gifted a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

This is a book of 10 short horror stories. I didn't think horror stories would work in shorts as you need to build the suspense. They work in this book. They're quirky, fun, creepy and some are plain stomach churning. I love how none of the stories feel rushed and they manage to pull you in.

Again with the one liners, Gabriel Beyers is fast becoming one of my favourite authors for his one liners and the ability to put them in a thriller without them standing out like a sore thumb.

A Wickedly Fun Read

The stories contained in this book are all original, unique, well written and fun. A couple of the better stories had me on the edge of my seat. If you're a fan of horror stories this is a read you can't miss!

Mesmerizing and Magical

In a crafty urban fantasy, Monique James takes the reader on a thrilling journey of discovery. Nixon discovers that ghosts, witches, murderers, and traitors lie around every corner of New Orleans. They've been there the whole time; he just never noticed. He finds himself stuck in the middle of a war he had nothing to do with. Friends, lovers, and family members seem to waver in their loyalty. He has no idea who he can trust. Can he even trust his own mind?

This is the kind of book that kept me up until 2 am reading, and I couldn't stop thinking about it throughout my day. It lingers.

I am very glad this wasn't the first novel I'd read by Monique O'Connor James.

James has a certain way of building up her paranormal treats that brings me back for more, no matter the circumstance.

The story of Nixon coming into his powers - powers he still doesn't know everything about - is intriguing and full of twists that do sometimes come out of thin air with no foreshadowing. The cover is misleading as there is nothing steam about the interaction between Nixon and Liivie.

I am very glad this wasn't the first novel I'd read by Monique O'Connor James.

There were too few commas for my liking, and that ending! I do, however, wish Mrs.

Instead of an entertaining story well performed, this comes across as an environmental lecture being read to a class by a teacher. Good chance the class would either lose interest or fall asleep.
