"The Terrible Old Man" might be the most normal of Lovecraft's ...

"The Terrible Old Man" might be the most normal of Lovecraft's stories, the most "normal" one I've read, anyway. Which is not to say that it's not a horror story, but it's not a weird, tentacled monster horror story.

This is going to be all spoilery, by the way, because the short story is quite short, and there's no way to talk about what I want to talk about without giving it away. But you should still read it because 1. it's short, and 2. it's that good.

I'm not saying that Lovecraft invented this type of story, but this is certainly the earliest example that I know I've read of this type, the type where the perpetrators become the victims.

So...

There's an old man, an ex-sea captain, who lives alone and is rumored to have vast stores of treasures. Or something. No one really knows because the old guy keeps to himself and everyone is afraid of him. But, then, three new guys arrive into town, hear about the guy, and decide that they will rob the old man. They'll torture the location of the hidden treasure out of him if they have to.

Except one of the guys, the driver, isn't too keen on the torture part, so he tells his two buddies to go easy on the old guy. And that's the last he sees of them as they head to the house and he waits in the car. Not long after, he hears screams coming from inside the house and assumes it's the old guy... until he finds the old guy staring at him from the gate with a wicked grin on his face.

Seriously, go read it.

Now, one of the things I read about this story is that it's a prime example of Lovecraft's racism... wait! What?

I'm sorry; I just don't see it.

Yes, the men from out of town are "foreigners" in that they are not from the small town where everyone knows about the terrible old man. You have to outsiders come in who don't know any better. I think you have to read awfully deep between the lines to turn this into some kind of warning to outsiders to stay out.

Or maybe I just don't know enough about Lovecraft.

However, not knowing more than I do, I say this is a really great read.

While the story is just so-so, it did interest me in reading more about Kingsport.

Three robbers pay a visit to a reclusive old sea captain with a rumored stash of hoarded gold.

This is the first in a series of stories about the fictional town of Kingsport written by Lovecraft. While the story is just so-so, it did interest me in reading more about Kingsport.

Once you get past Lovecraft's immagrant bashing, it's not a bad story.

I was captivated with the story

This is out of my comfort zone genre wise, being far more menacing and dark than titles I normally review. It started out without great menace, with the darker tones coming as experiences with the occult began to occur. That being said, I was captivated with the story: could visualize the environment and the flora and fauna, and found myself immersed in the mountains that are so beautiful and can be so menacing.

At times feeling like a story around the fire, then switching to show the authors knowledge of how things work and his characters, each moment was a new revelation. Each character is defined and developed in pieces, both wholly complete and incomplete leaving their faults, foibles and agendas to be doled out in tiny pieces as the tension builds. Sadly, with so many characters and so many personal stories that intersect, parallel and diverge, it was often hard to both keep track of each and find them leaving a lasting memory or fully drawn impression. Ideally half of the characters would have been eliminated in this story, and perhaps a second story to bring in their views on the overall.

Rammeling narrated the audiobook himself, his familiarity with the text and his hints that foreshadowed the spooky moments with a soft tonal difference in his voice. He has a particular timbre to his voice, with a reverberation and tone that is rich and full of bass. There was, however, hollowness in the recording, much as if the recording was done in a shower room or there was no soundproofing in the recording studio. While notable, it was not dramatically distracting and was an interesting accompaniment to the story.

I couldnt stop thinking about what next in this story, and found myself taking extra listening time when I should have been working on other things. This is the perfect accompanying listen for a long car trip, preferably heading out to camp in the mountains of New England.

Good vs evil

Seed of Satan by Lynda D. Brown is an exciting story, filled with demons coming into our modern world. Leah, a Romace novelist who as a practicing Wiccan, casts a spell over her characters in order to make the Werewolves, and other supernatural beings more real. In the end Leah gets far more than she bargained for with her best selling novels. She opens the door for the Nefilim, the fallen angels of Biblical times to come in.

The story moves along at a brisk pace, and all who are not right with God pay the price when they meet their demon lovers through the website Fantasylover.com. This book, Leah's story, is a continuation of a previous story, part of the Invisible Enemies series.

I liked the story, but for me there were too many characters to keep track of. Especially since I hadn't read the first book. Also, the characters were lacking in much development, again, the author couldn't get into depth with that many characters to keep track of. This book might have made a much better screenplay. I would have given it 5 stars if I had read it in screenplay form.

What made the experience of listening to BloodLoss the most enjoyable?

Nightmares about the characters especially the one from Hunted (John). Think I will always be Haunted by this Hunted twist :-D

A difficult beginning but the twist and ending make it worthwhile

Despite some difficulty identifying with some characters and some shifts in the story, I did like this book and would recommend it. The story follows Stuart Mullond at a particularly troublesome point in his life. Despite it being years in the past, he's still tormented by a botched operation on his penis from when he was a little boy. In fact, he starts believing that he is being followed by Dr. Furgeson, the doctor who botched things. It is very obviously creating mental problems for him as his life quickly falls apart.

This is the part of the novel where rather than seeing the disintegration of a man's mental health into full-on crazy, I realized we were jumping straight into the crazy with no lead up. However, proving me wrong, Garton took the story in a slight twist and quickly changed things up. I'm not going to spoil things but I'll admit to being surprised and liking the new aspect. It took things to the next level. It made the story a little bit harder to believe but once I got past that part, it was great. It also totally changed the ending that I was predicting. The hardest part to connect with the story was the beginning when it's so obvious to the reader that Stuart needs serious help; that is when I couldn't connect with what the characters were doing. Still a good story though and one that is recommended.

This is my first Ray Garton novel and I enjoyed reading it

This is my first Ray Garton novel and I enjoyed reading it. I had read his short fiction before in Cemetery Dance magazine and in the comic book Grave Tales and remembered that I liked his easy-to-read style. Since there is no three and a half stars, I have to click three, but the book is a fun, scary tale about memories that linger and the power that we give them. The first chapter is a five star horror show and worth buying the book for all by itself.

Interesting!

Pretty good. After reading it I was actually suprised how well it sat with me. If I'd of known about the entire book before I read it I probably wouldn't of liked it. It had an odd twist in it that I wasn't really expecting. However, I didn't mind it. The twist is more about the main character, not really the plot of the book. I am really having a tough time explaining this without giving anything away! You'd have to read it to find out. This is my first book by Garton and it won't be the last!

Scary and funny and suspenseful

This reminded me of Stephen King. A lot of twists and turns. I found it funny at times, the superhero and his alter ego. When the villain got into the house it was very creepy.
