Entertaining, intelligent book for young readers
I just read this book with my 7 year old daughter, and she laughed throughout! It is a clever, fun book which kids who have just become fairly proficient readers can read themselves. The high entertainment value holds their interest. It is always refreshing to find a great kid's book like this that isn't part of a series or formulaic.
This is one of my favorite books of all time.
We have this book on tape. The narration is wonderful because of the British accents. We like Bob and Fatso. Dick King Smith is our favorite author.

Fascinating read but not for kids!
When I picked up this book, I wasn't sure if it was for kids or adults. The storyline of a population of people only a millimeter and a half tall and occupying a tree seems written for children. However, the depth of content and allegorical content is much more appropriate for older readers. As an adult, I was fascinated by the plot and was hooked early on. The violence throughout the book makes it inappropriate for children. I would recommend it for teens and older. I thought the analogy between the tree and how their culture treated it and our care for the earth was thought-provoking and relevant. I also thought the characters were well developed and believable.
    Great read!
It Grows On You ... Sort Of!
As a mother who screens everything her 11-year-old daughter reads, I always welcome recommendations from librarians and booksellers, especially if they are pre-published. When we received "Toby Alone" by Timothée De Fombelle, it was not a pre-pub - but still new to our library, and I am really glad our library has it in their catalogue. It is not a "happy" book, and the way it is structured is reminiscent of how tree roots and branches grow, really, tangling back and forth and doubling over - it is disturbing in the way Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" was disturbing when I read it in school, only a little less. Maybe. It is very thought-provoking, and raises very eerie questions about what power really means in the hands of conscience, when the viewpoint is not a popular one. What does our government know that they are keeping from us for "our own good"? Or the good of the environment? The good of "life as we know it"? These are easily very deep questions that would generate heated discussions in the classrooms during Literature class and, while I really can't say I *enjoyed* the book, I find myself thinking about it and the issues it raises long after I've put the book down. I guess it's a book that really *grows* on you! I believe said daughter feels similarly. In her words:
"The book, `Toby Alone' by Timothée De Fombelle is an adventurous, if unsettling, book for tweens.
"Toby is only one millimeter tall at 13 and, lives in a big oak tree with his parents. Already, he has a so-called life of crime, due to his father. You see, Toby's father is a famous scientist. Everyone admires him. That is, until he finds a secret he is not willing to part with, because it will kill the very tree they live in, even though it would help people work less. That's all. As a result, Toby's family is banished to the Lower Branches where he meets Elisha, his only true friend. Then, that life crumbles away when his family is captured.

This book was written at a time when foot-and-mouth was very much in the news, as farmers across the UK fell victim to an outbreak that was to leave potent images of blazing carcasses deeply embedded in many minds. Morpurgo cleverly manages to avoid a feeling of haste in his writing (although the book was actually written very quickly, and as a reaction to Morpurgo's own experiences as co-founder of Farms for City Children), by giving the listener a thorough and poignant insight into what it is really like for farmers waiting to find out if they are about to lose their livelihoods.

It's a great read for young readers
A little different from the original novel. It's a great read for young readers.
    Goodbye Sweet Prince
As far as the Christy story goes, this is an original C. Archer expantion that has no ties to the original book or movie. I was not very impressed with it, and you'd think being the second to last book in the series the focuss should be a little bit more "Neil or David" if you know what I mean. Over all its an OK read.
    WHO RESCUES PRINCE?
The mission in Cutter Gap, in the Great Smokies, lacks sufficient funds to continue operating unless something can be done. It is reluctantly decided that Prince, the beautiful, three year old black stallion must be sold. The children in the mission school are heart broken, especially, Ruby Mae, the best rider in Cutter Gap. Even Lundy, the school's overgrown bully seems crushed.
To make the children feel better, Christy suggests that they make a quilt-like saddle blanket. They have no material, so they cut squares out of the sleeves of their clothes and fashion the saddle blanket. Lundy, crafts a halter for Prince out of scraps begged from his father.
The day for Prince to be sold at auction arrives. David assures the children that he'll make certain that Prince finds a good home, but it was not to be. Will Prince be rescued? Were the methods used acceptable? You decide!
Does God sometimes intervene in unusual ways?

This was a very great Battle Book. I love it alot.
If you love magic you will definitely love this book. It's one of the best books I've ever read. I recommend it.
    cool
love it. because there is magic
    I believe in faerie's and mermaid's .
and a girl and friends I love
I was disappointed, I hope you won't be
Would you try another book from David Pogue and/or David Pogue?
Yes... I'm a big fan of David Pogue's columns and video on NYTimes, CNet, Yahoo and his Nova mini-series. I read about the story about how this book was written and the themes and ideas that David Pogue wanted to bring in this book and it sounded like it would be great story... unfortunately, I don't think the end result just came together well... too often Pogue ended up using his "journalistic/description/science writer" voice to describe things objectively... instead of emotionally as a fictional storyteller.
Has Abby Carnelia's One and Only Magical Power turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I like the genre of children discovering and entering a new world of wonder and secret amazement. The problem were that this book spent
What didnt you like about David Pogues performance?
I find the corny deliver he has in his videos and on TV show amusing in 2-3 min segments... but his hammy deliver gets a little tiring for me after the first hour. Particularly his imitation of two of the more cartoonish characters were uninspired to me (again good for a father just telling his child a story... not as good on a professional audiobook).
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Abby Carnelia's One and Only Magical Power?
You know towards through the book I was thinking this very thing. I would cut out most of the excessive description passage where the author list in excessive and breathlessly excited detail every building, room, piece of furniture, electronic gadget... much in the same way a salesperson would describe the features of a product in a commercial.I would have cut out all the blatant foreshadowing and the ending chapter as well.
    Any additional comments?
Perhaps I am just the wrong audience for this book. I'm a decent fan of David Pogue and had was hoping this would be a nice clever little story I could share with my daughter... but sadly the differences between a columnist and a novelist is demonstrated only too obviously for me here (just because you are good at one style of writing, doesn't me you will be of the other).
Clever, and with a good underlying message
Got this book for my 3 daughters for a road trip, and gave it a listen myself. It had a clever story line, some thought-provoking little gems, and is very current in its themes. My daughters (ages 7 and 9) enjoyed it thoroughly. The narrator does an excellent job with various character voices, which adds interest and appeal.
