I liked this and most of the Sophie books by Nancy Rue. Good book 4 maybe 9-12yr-olds. about how Sophie and Jimmy work together at school and stuff and Sophie and her 'flakes' play a trick on the 'pops' and Sophie pretends 2 be in love with Jimmy. And she gets cyber-bullied and stuff, but in the end it works out.

morpurgo weaves magic again ...beautiful

a warm touching story with an important message of love ...tears in ones eyes again.!

Wonderful! Morpurgo at his very very best.

We listened to this on a long car journey and were totally gripped from start to finish. It is a truly engaging story wonderfully read by Gareth Cassidy. There is not quite as much death and misery as in some Morpurgos which my children really appreciated, and the story races along with empathetic characters, unlikely twists, though provoking themes with fun and delight provided by a monkey. In true Morpurgo style nothing is spelled out for you so my children who range from 7 to 12 were stretched and intrigued. We were sad when it was over. I really recommend this for all ages.

Nesbit and Gibson have a winner!

My 8 year old son loves this audio book and has listened to it many times. We think Nesbit's stories are wonderful, imaginative, and unique. We have several other stories by Nesbit and like them all. The narrator, Gibson, is also a favorite. She gives the characters voices and lightens the stories. My son also enjoys Gibson's other works (especially At the Back of the North Wind).

Great Story, Annoying Narration

This is a brilliant book by Edith Nesbit. Unfortunately, my son hates the narration (I'm not keen on it either). He finds it difficult to understand. It isn't the accent - many of our close friends have thick accents and we've lived abroad before. It's that Ms. Gibson's voice is old-fashioned, deep & grating (like she's had a few too many cigarettes). The way she speaks is just strange - think: gravelly, sometimes staccato, strange rhythm and oddly pinched. I think this is a very poor value. I gave it two stars because the story is great. However, this is a CD and we just can't get over the narration though the sound quality is good. It may just be personal preference, but I regret the purchase. Oh, and it isn't that she does "voices" for different characters - I like that & do it when I read to my son. It's just I don't like the way she does it.

***Note: My son now loves this CD. I'm still leaving off one star for the annoying narration - because it is an audio book and should be pleasing to the ear - but it becomes less annoying if you listen long enough to desensitize your ears. And, it might not bother you. You could even like the narration.

Another classic by E. Nesbit

I'm thoroughly enjoying reading this book with my 10-year-old son. The language and humor are rich. It is a collection of shorter works. So far, we've just read the first story in which a little boy finds himself king and accidentally releases a fierce dragon into his kingdom. After much tribulation the boy-king figures out how to correct his mistake and return the dragon to the book from which he had escaped because of the boy-king's curiosity and disobedience.

"But when Lionel was in bed he could not sleep for thinking of the book, and when the full moon was shining with all her might and light he got up and crept down to the library and climbed up and got 'The Book of Beasts.'"

A Perfect Story about Love and Loss

Henning Mankell in THE CAT WHO LIKED RAIN has written a near-perfect childrenâs book. He is quoted as saying about this story: âThis might even be my most important book.â While I have not read everything this fine writer has written, this certainly is as good a childrenâs novel as I can remember having read and as good as the 8 or 10 books of his of all kinds that I have read. Would this story appeal to a youngster? I do not know, but I would certainly like to put it in the hands of a child and find out. Until I can do that, Iâm pressing it into a middle-aged child friend of mine for his reaction right away.

Lukas gets a completely black cat except for a white marking on his tail for his seventh birthday. It is love at first sight, at least for Lukas. He names his new friend âNight.â He wants to understand everything about Night: âIt seemed to Lukas that it wasnât easy to understand what went on in a catâs head. Lukas knew how he behaved when he was angry or upset or happy. But he wasnât at all sure how Night reacted in such circumstances. Lukas knew that Nightâs tail would be upright when he was pleased and contented, and that he would rush up against Lukasâ legs, and that he would purr. But what would Night do when he was upset?â Lukas sets about to take care of and understand Night. Then problems begin when Night comes up missing. And that is all I can say about the plot without telling too much.

It is obvious that Mr. Mankell is no stranger to cats or to seven-year-old and fourteen-year-old boys (Lukas has an older brother Markus whose nickname is Whirlwind). The author gets all the shenanigans of Night just right. He hides in places in the home making it difficult for Lukas to find him, he likes to jump up and lie on the highest shelf in the kitchen, he awakens Lukas at four in the morning when he is ready to play, he is not interested in being put on a leash. But Mr. Mankell flips one characteristic of most cats: Night apparently likes to prowl in the rain. And Lukasâ tiffs and run-ins with Whirlwind are so very typical of two brothers this far apart in age growing up together. The parents Axel and Beatrice who round out this family are good and loving parents. They are both attentive and sensitive to Lukasâ every need and feeling. That it not to say that they are story-book parents at all, but real flesh and blood ones. As he always does in his novels, Mr. Mankell shows great empathy for these characters.

Just Good Fun

I loved it I would love to see a sequel "Beyond the Fringe" maybe. This was just good clean fun all the way through and I would recommend this for any age,I laughed out loud in several places.

A fantastic listen on an 8 hour car journey! Pratchett's first book is as good now as ever! Well read by an animated reader, go unabridged and hear the entire story!

Not one of my favourites!

I usually enjoy the children's books, this one was OK, but not, in my opinion, up there with the rest. It might have been because the names of the different 'tribes' were a bit too odd for me to remember and 'place'. Still good, but Mr Pratchett sets such a high standard that I always expect to be bowled over! This book still had its 'common sense' feel for the behaviour of the characters.

I'm used to the tony robinson voices and pronunciation so the performance seemed a little strange to me but still very good.

This has been my favourite story since I was little, and it was amazing to hear again. Anyone and everyone should experience this book, whether reading or listening, it has so many depths its hard to do it justice in an explanation
