Jack Russell Terrier by Darrel and Sally Odgers
My son (age 10) really enjoys this series. The books should be read in order to not spoil the ending to another, but this series really has him addicted to reading(and he didn't like to read before finding Jack Russel).

Biology and genetics perfect front-loading source
I am studying to be a Biology teacher and I saw this book and thought it would be a perfect front-loading source for my future students. I had to get it.

Well written and illustrated. It was a nice intro to Darwin before taking our 9 & 8 year old kids to the Galapagos.
Great book and we're loving the story
Great book and we're loving the story! The images are adorable and it's a great introduction to Darwin for my 6 year old.
The life of Darwin from child to adult ...excellent choice for the young and old scientist !
Darwin's own age evolves from child to adult in text and illustrations ,
    both beautifully done .
A great companion book to the book , " Charles Darwin and the Beagle Adventure ( Historical Notebooks ) ''.
    Excellent story with gorgeous illustrations
I was captivated by the cover and story of Darwin, of which I didn't know a lot about. I found this book delightful- light and easy reading with an interesting story arc and more depth than I would have expected from an illustrated biography.

  • Anpao Audiobook by Jamake Highwater

    Title: Anpao
    Subtitle: An American Indian Odyssey
    Author: Jamake Highwater
    Narrator: George Guidall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-22-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of the Native American storyteller, Jamake Highwater weaves generations of legends and stories into the haunting legend of a handsome young brave named Anpao. When Anpao falls in love with the beautiful Ko-Ko-mik-e-is, she tells him she belongs to the Sun alone. Before they can marry, Anpao must complete a dangerous journey to the house of the Sun to get permission to wed his beloved. As a sign of the Suns approval, the scars will be melted from Anpaos tawny cheek. This journey takes him backwards and forward in time and space, from the dawn of time to his eerie meeting with the death-horse and its horrific rider, Smallpox. In translating ancient legends into a modern folktale, Highwater allows the non-Indian listener rare insights into a Native American view of history. In presenting the images that are uniquely Indian, Highwater does not revert to symbols of white culture. He retains the other-worldly, magical quality of Indian tradition, making Anpao a uniquely enriching and unforgettable listening experience.

    Great
Seamless Tapestry of Native American Creation Legends
This 1977 extended tale presents many stories transmitted by proud oral traditionâblending the composite of pre Colombian
beliefs and values of several North American Indian tribes. Carefully preserved in written format these tales represent more than mere fireside entertainment; they express the sacred ideologies of the first Americans. The morals expressed in this pseudo anthology, however,
are not always immediately apparent to Europeanized âcivilization.â
Divided into four main sections, this tapestry of tales is followed by the Storytellerâs Farewell, Notes on the authorâs diverse sources, and a Bibliography for further study. The creation myths (not to belittle their relevance to native American cultures) deal with the cosmos, the genesis of earth, and sky gods; the tales progress to the making of Man, the arrival of Evil in the form of sorcerers; thence to Manâs interaction with many animal âpeopleâ (like Raven and Coyote); concluding with the negative and destructive impact of the inevitable collision with White Men.
The protagonist, Anpao, does not represent any one heroic figure who is found in all tribal legends. He embarks on a quest to remove the scar from his face and to find his father, the Sun, so that he may ultimately marry a beautiful Indian girlâwho serves as his inspiration for a remarkable and painful odyssey to the World-above-the-World. I believe that Highwater has woven hints of the universality of human natureâthat there is a touch of Anpao in each of us. We journey through life seeking its very source, meaning and final goal. Anpaoâhe is Dawn of Man!
    FAKE INDIAN author....
Beware of "fake indians" who seek to profit for romantisized views of Native culture. This article is from Indian News Today...
"Most of the fake Indians are people who are just trying to get hired, to get a scholarship, to get promoted, and the like. In some cases, however, they have tried to do what my mother used to call âget above their raisings.â Several of them have written best-seller books, making them rich and famous.

    Great for a toddler...
We have four paperbacks and one hardcover release from this series. Every illustration in each of the paperback releases are almost non-existent, faint. The illustrations in the one hardcover are all vivid, high-contrast. The books themselves we read aloud to my two-and-a-half year old son. He enjoys them immensely. There is very little going on in each of these stories. One could sum an entire book in one sentence: two lost mice get escorted home by an eagle. Really, there is not much more to any of the five stories we have. At the beginning of each book is a recap of The Storm (the first book in the series)--that gets old, repetitive. My toddler enjoys the stories. I enjoy reading to him. They are no comparison to 'The Wind in the Willows', but I have found them to be the closest match when looking for books for a toddler with personified animal characters. We are glad we have them though we wish we purchased just the hardcover releases for the illustration quality.
    Buy the whole series
Cynthia Rylant is a marvelous author and obviously quite prolific. She is the author of the "Poppleton," "Henry and Mudge," and the "Cobble Street Cousins," series as well as numerous other books. I bought this particular series for my nieces (ages 4 and 7). They are short, almost novellas, but Rylant does not "talk down" to her audience instead exposing our young ones to higher level vocabulary. The adventures the Lighthouse Family have, especially the three orphaned/adopted young mice, are exciting, but quiet; no extreme violence, fearful chases or shoot 'em up. They make great bedtime reading.
    Great Story about getting lost!
This series is a wonderful treasure to share with your children. Read the first one first, The Storm. It introduces you to the characters and develops the story line. After that, the rest can be read out of order and they will still make sense. There are 5 books, I believe in the series.
This book in particular is really good because the mice children get lost and the eagle helps them get back. It is a good book to help you talk to your children about getting lost and what to do. It isn't too scary for young children, but it does help them understand what it means to be scared when if they were to get lost.
    I highly recommend this book!!
    Five Stars

    Fun but bad ending
I liked the kids being praised for mischief. However, I hate complete cliff hanger that is totally dependent on the reader getting book two. I like one to finish but leaves you wanting more mischief not answers to the problem.

A stunning middle-grade debut - full of heart, humor, and nonstop action.
It's tough to be 13, especially when somebody's trying to kill you. Not that Egg's life was ever easy, growing up on sweaty, pirate-infested Deadweather Island with no company except an incompetent tutor and a pair of unusually violent siblings who hate his guts.
But when Egg's father hustles their family off on a mysterious errand to fabulously wealthy Sunrise Island, then disappears with the siblings in a freak accident, Egg finds himself a long-term guest at the mansion of the glamorous Pembroke family and their beautiful, sharp-tongued daughter Millicent.
Finally, life seems perfect. Until someone tries to throw him off a cliff. Suddenly, Egg's running for his life in a bewildering world of cutthroat pirates, villainous businessmen, and strange Native legends. The only people who can help him sort out the mystery of why he's been marked for death are Millicent and a one-handed, possibly deranged cabin boy.
Come along for the ride. You'll be glad you did.

My boys (age 10 and 8) loved it!
My boys loved the story and stayed up way too late listening to it. Hated to see it end and were sad that Book 2 isn't available yet. Can't get much higher review than that!
Great Boy book for Middle Grade Readers
Where does Deadweather and Sunrise rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of the best Middle Grade reads.
What did you like best about this story?
Larger than life characters. All of them.
What does Fred Berman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His narration serves Egg's dry wit.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reation, but very funny in places.
    Any additional comments?
It's a little dark, but the characters are so exaggerated that the darkness adds to the caricature.
Fast moving book with lots of action and adventure.
    Exciting misadventures!
Pirates, lost treasure, murder, more pirates, crazy escapes, battles to the death, a cute girl, and, did I say pirates? A great story for young adult readers who appreciate clever heroics and finding friends among enemies along the way.

fun romp through a mixed-up, rough school day!
This is yet another coming of age book. The protagonist is a likeable girl who is dependent on a notebook for running her daysâ activities. When it is âlostâ she feels she wonât be able to manage. I like the idea of learning to cope without crutches. I think the protagonist did also, as even though so much comical, horrible stuff happened to her, in the end, she realized she was her own person, could make her own choices, and only had to be herself to be liked and appreciated. She could let go of her fears and manage and cope on the fly!! A good lesson for us all.
