Just Okay; Use Your Creidts Than Spend The Money

This is where Law & Order SVU mingles with the Scooby Doo Mysteries, minus the Great Dane and Scooby Snacks.

Zindel's way with words left me chuckling at his turns of phrase. His narrator, P.C. (Peter Christopher) Hawke is son to a famous archeologist, Steven. Employed at NYC's Museum of Natural History. A lifelong NYC native, it was easy to follow Zindel's NYC layout even if a reader's never visited Gotham. Kudos.

The supporting characters--Aunt Doria, Jesus, Mrs. Riggs, Mrs. Xanthe, Spaulding Grizinski, Tom Boggs and his mom, and others--are well developed and leave a mark in the role Zindel had them cast. As a writer doing homework in how to construct my own YA mysteries, Zindel doesn't leave time, room or space in the plot to allow excess subplot flab to sidetrack or get detoured in with the readers/listeners--and it marches straight to its finish in a Flap A/Slot B conclusion.

Two big nits with this--aside from my own aversion to cockroaches and other crawlies with more legs than necessary: Zindel's virtual info dump in great detail in the story. Needed info yes, info glut, no. The editor in charge of this--and the writer, too, sorry to say--left this info in more to show off than advance a plot, IMO.

I also didn't get the sense P.C. was the teen Zindel presented him as. Sometimes authors insert their own personalities/traits/mannerisms and other speaks into their characters; this was evident in P.C.'s personality, making him not fully P.C. P.C. needs to read more lived in, good in his own skin, and show the untypical side most sleuths-in-training seldom show. SCREAM MUSEUM had more Freddy, Daphne & Velma in it than how Mac, Jesus and P.C. would ever come across. And, oh, I guessed the perps from Chapter 3.

It's a great story for kids in the 9yo-12yo bunch, but for older kids, the NYC savvy or quick solvers for logic puzzles and those familiar with every mystery sub-genre around, you may want to pass on this.

Good story...

Overall good story. Good for a one time quick read. I read for a project I was helping my daughter with. I would recommend.

Recorded books encourge reading

My son had read all the other in this series and the library did not have this one. He loved listening to it as he read along.

Book review for: The Surfing Corpse (By Paul Zindel)

I thought this was a very good book. I'm gald I decided to read it, it was well worth my time. What made the book most interesting was it's plot and especially it's characters.

This book is abut two kids named PC and Makenzie. they live in New York City and work together in solving mysteries. When they're on a field trip at a waterfall, a student supposedly falls of edge of the falls. PC and Makenzie think the kid's mother did it at first, but when they take a trip to Las Angeles to investigate, they are convinced otherwise...

One of my favorite things about the book was it's main characters. PC Hawke and his 'partner', Makenzie were just two regular middle schoolers, but they did lots of crime investigations and got to go to lots of places.

I thought they were really lucky when they got to go to L.A. to solve a murder mystery.I liked how PC and Makenzie were extremely nosy and were always getting themselves into trouble. The other characters made the story interesting, too. I thought that the mother of the student who fell of the waterfall was very entertaining and sort of funny.

The other thing that made the book great was the plot. It had all sorts of unexpected twists and turns.The whole story you had no idea of what was going to come next. My favorite part of the entire story was at the very end, when PC and makenzie were trying to be killed by a group of people.It was very intense, but turned out good.

I strongly recomend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery book with twists and turns all throughout it. It's a great book and i'm happy I read it.

For every person who likes a little twist and a mystery, The Surfing Corpse is a book that you should read. The Surfing Corpse is a book about two best friends named Mackenzie and P.C. (Peter Christopher).Their junior class trip turns into a disaster when classmate Timmy Warner plunges down a 300-foot waterfall. Soon after his funeral, Mrs. Warner's strange behaviors send P.C. and Mackenzie to Los Angeles, where they follow a twisting trail of clues involving a mysterious surfer, a murderous ghost, and some good actors. My opinion of this book is that this is a great book that will keep turning the pages until the book is finished! I could not put this book down for a second. And when Timmy Warner plunged down the waterfall, I thought for sure that he'd survive and that he jumped himself. There were a lot of times where I thought I figured out the mystery and I didn't. If you read this book it will probably happen to you to. To figure out this mystery you must read this book. If you are going to try and figure out the mystery your self, good luck trying! Therefore, this is a great book. And I think that you should read it. So.

My 10 year old said it was 'just plain boring'

My 10 year old daughter said this book was just plain boring. It was one of her choices for her 5th grade summer reading so she chose it. In her words: It's all about makeup, boyfriends and how to get across a river. She made it just over halfway through the book and finally chose another book to read instead.

Touching Story of Friendship

Faith Hope and Ivy June is a slow paced story of girls finding their place in their peer group, family and the world. Faith Hope and Ivy June is also an in-depth, insightful and moving story. It offers a realistic, but not judgmental, look at the very hard, very poor lives of Appalachian coal miners. It also shows how unaware and uninformed most of us - even the citizens of nearby cities - are when it comes to the Appalachian culture. Middle school female readers will identify with, and cheer for, Ivy June and her new big city friend, Catherine.

love this story

Outstanding story about family, friendship, community and prejudices. A great read for jr high girls. I loved the contrast of 2 completely different cultures within one state.

Great read!

My 11 year old daughter loved this book. She insisted I read it after she was finished. A great story about two girls with completely different lives brought together in a student exchange program. Ivy is from a mining community in the mountains and doesn't even have a bathroom in her house. She is set up with Catherine who is from the city and very well off. They are both smart, nice respectable girls who learn a lot from each other, and learn that you can't judge others based on stereo types.

Buy a hardcopy of the book

The book is pretty good, but narration is almost unbearable especially the male and adult voices. The only reason I finished the audiobook was to justify the purchase. I would have given the book a higher rating if the narration was not so bad.

Vampires & Werewolves & UnDead Oh My!

This is such a cute book! The writing is funny and believable (especially considering the subject) and everything just flows. The reader's Aussie accent makes it even more interesting.

Even tho it's listed as YA it's well enough written for us "Old" Adults too. Feel safe sharing it with your kids unless they have pet guinea pigs - the only icky part may be the references to guinea pigs as a food source.

An enjoyable, amusing quick "read." I loved it!

But's that's just my opinion :)

I'm Addicted to this Story

I've lost track of how many times I've listened to this story. I put off using one of my precious Audible credits on it because my local library makes it available for free via Overdrive. But when I renewed my Audible subscription and was awarded a free credit, I did the only logical thing: I now own it!

So why do I love this story so much? For me, it comes down to three things: fun characters who I've grown to love; a good story revolving around the themes of self-acceptance and loyalty; and fabulous narration and characterization by the talented actress Caroline Lee.

Jinks gives us a new and crazy perspective on vampires and werewolves. In Jinks' conception, they aren't monsters to be feared, but victims struggling to accept and cope with their "afflictions" in a world which wants to either exploit or destroy them.

A small, unlikely group of Australian vampires, forever locked into the physical age at which they were "fanged," meet every Tuesday night with a local Catholic priest in a support group environment. Thrown together with nothing in common but their "disability," they learn to tolerate one another for the sake of avoiding total isolation from humanity.

When one of their number is "slain," by a vampire-hating fanatic, they band together and exercise all their resources to track down the culprit before he gets to them. Along the way, they encounter their first werewolf, a creature they weren't sure even existed. Then it's the vampires and the werewolf against some vicious, money-hungry thugs who have built a world-wide network of underground werewolf fighting. (Think along the lines of illegal dog fights or cock fights. Nasty stuff!)

I can't say enough about what Caroline Lee does with this work. Yes, Jinks wrote a book for young adults, but Lee brings terrific personality to the characters.

Wonderful!

I HATED Greek Myths as a kid (thought they were boring Greek soap operas), but my children (ages 4 and 7) and I really love these stories. These stories appeal on multiple levels -- fantasy and action for the kids and the illumination of "life lessons" for the adults. The author helpfully puts some of the "life lessons" in plain English, which is of benefit to us sleepy parents who don't want to have to read between the lines of ancient metaphor. It's amazing how these Greek myths really do illustrate the timeless patterns in human nature and our interactions that we see all around us today. The narrator is very enjoyable to listen to, and the stories are told simply without becoming simplistic.

If you could sum up The Beautiful Stories of Life in three words, what would they be?

The tales are slightly more neutral than the originals, less blame, less bad guy, more like life. A great version for today's children!

Hooray for the Red Soxs

Sent to our Godchild who adores the Red Soxs. His Mom might have to read it but this is a wonderful story (I read it before I sent it) about the trials of a young boy and his father living under Fenway Park. Lots of good thoughts and questions for young folks growing up in the world now as they read this book.

Incredible book storyline and beginning and end deliberately crafted. Each chapter hanging by a red ominous sleek thread while Oscar approaches and overcame victory.

Perfect for my niece and nephew....

Great read for fans

As a lifelong baseball fan, and in particular, as a Red Sox fan, I thoroughly enjoyed The Prince of Fenway Park. It was a wonderful mix of fantasy, family relationships, and baseball. I was especially pleased that the author directly addressed the issue of race within the Red Sox organization. It's almost never talked about, but deserves to be. I plan to read it to my class this year, and use it as a springboard for discussions about America's problem dealing with race.

Original and entertaining

Although I'm not a child or young adult, I still found this book highly entertaining, original, well worth the credit. Author Scott Mebus combines an interesting premise with strange and unusual characters to create a really good tale of fantasy.

The narrator does a good job of bring the story to life.

Really good read for PJ & HP fans!

Took a gamble on this book & it paid off. Slow in starting but quickly takes up speed & grabs your attention. Didn't want to put it down...Really glad I took a gamble on it! I hope Mr. Mebus continues the story.

Clever and engaging.

I love nothing better than a good story. This is a very good story! Lots of interesting history painlessly presented and a very clever storyline. I can't wait for the next installment.

If you liked Percy Jakson you'll love this!

This is one of those books I came upon by chance, it seemed to have an interesting premiss so I gave it a listen. After I was done I was amazed by the greaness of this book; it has a great primiss, the characters are well thought out and beliveable, I loved how the author seemlessly wove historical figures and places alongside modern-day New York (and I do love history), and the plot was great. As I listened I notaced many similarities to Rick Riorden's Percey Jackson and the Olympians series (which I love by the way) and this made me love this book even more. I have heard nothin but praise for this book and omething tells me that hollywood's going to call for the movie rights sooner or later but until then I egerly await the next book in the seires. you loved Percy Jackson and the Olympians this is the book for you.
