    It was like being there!
Every chapter ended in suspense that we had to keep turning pages! The book was written so well it was like we experienced the same things as the characters.
    Fun read with the kids
Good adventure story that held my kids (10 yr old boy / 7 year old girl) interest night after night.
    Five Stars
I have the complete collection of the Danny Dunn books now.
Enjoyable as Nostalgia, But Not The Best In The Series
Originally published in 1957, DANNY DUNN ON A DESERT ISLAND is the second in a series of fifteen childrenâs novels by Raymond Abrashkin and Jay Williams. The background for all the novels is the same: widowed Mrs. Dunn is housekeeper for the rather eccentric Professor Euclid Bullfinch, a scientist at Midston University. Her son Danny wants to become a scientist when he grows up, and he and friends Joe and Irene frequently become entangled in science-oriented adventures, often to the professorâs amusement.
In this novel, Professor Bullfinch and his friend Dr. Grimes argue about which has more practical knowledgeâand decide to settle the question by having a competition. Each man will go to a desert island, where he must survive on his own with only basic materials. Danny is to go with Professor Bullfinch and his friend Joe with Dr. Grimes (Irene doesnât appear in the first two books) to help keep score. Unfortunately, their small plane goes down in the Pacific before they can reach their planned destination, and suddenly the four find themselves stranded on a deserted island for real.
The Danny Dunn books have dated tremendously in terms of science. This book refers to island natives in ways that modern readers will find more than a little eye-rolling, and although it is short, it feels wordy in its descriptions of the projects they undertake on the island. I doubt it will be of interest to contemporary childrenâbut nostalgia has its charms. I enjoyed reading the books when I was nine or ten, and Iâm enjoying revisiting them forty years later. They make me smile. Sad to say, the Kindle version does not include the illustrations.

In Memory of Ivan, faithful feline companion for twenty years
Not one of his better adventures
Danny Dunn on a Desert Island, published in 1957, is the second novel in Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkinâs series of books about a precocious boyâs scientific adventures. I read these books when I was growing up, and now, thanks to the recently released e-book editions from Wildside Press, I am reading them with my two young sons. They really enjoyed the first book in the series, Danny Dunn and the Anti-Gravity Paint. This second installment was a little hard for them to get into at first, but eventually they both came to like it.

    Perfect for the beach!
I purchased this book for my granddaughter to read in case we had rainy days at the beach! I have a visually impaired grandson who is the same age and I was able to purchase a Braille copy for him. I loved seeing both of them reading! I'm a retired teacher and I always loved reading Jean Craighead George's chapter books to my fifth graders. I was delighted to find this book for my granddaughter. . .and grandson!
    a great book
Tomas Torres is a Mexican teenager who is forced to make the decision of whether or not to stay in school or go on to be a fisherman like his father and grandfather before him. Tomas wants to keep his fathers business alive, while his teacher is pushing him to stay in school and study marine biology. Opinions are split, things go wrong, read the book and find out what happens. A Shark Beneath The Reef is a wonderful book about a boy who is faced with the decision of school or fishing. His father was killed by a shark, and he has always wanted to continue his legacy. Tomas gains many different opinions on the topic before he decides. The marine police around his town are trying to shut down his fathers fishing business, and Tomas is caught up in the business of trying to save it, all while trying to make his decision. This was a very well written, well-researched book. The author uses great nature descriptions in the book, which really add to the book in many ways. I would recommend this to anyone looking for simply a good book.
The first thing I liked about this book is the different settings and how well they are described. For example heres how the author chose to describe a morning on the beach: "The mountains stretched north and south from horizon to horizon , and in the low light they looked like a gargantuan cutout of a jaw of sharks teeth. Above them stars shone as bright as fire. The sun would not be up for another hour." Its sentences like these that bring life to this book.
Another thing I liked about this book is the use of Mexican culture throughout the book. At the begging of the book it talks about the Mexican God Quetzalcoatl and the lady of Guadalupe. There is also a scene later in the book that describes a Mexican fiesta in which there is parades and dancing. This is a very neat and educational aspect to this book.
The final thing that I liked about the book is that while it is a very detailed book, the plot is very simple and it is an easy to read book. The plot of this book doesn't shift around too much, its beasically all about Tomas and his decision.

I love giving books as gifts
I love giving books as gifts, especially to younger readers who are just discovering the joy of reading. James Patterson is one of my favorite authors, and his support of young readers â and libraries â makes him a hero in my eyes. His YA books are fun and encourage young readers because they deal with topics that are interesting to them at that age.

It's 1993, and Generation X pulses to the beat of Kurt Cobain and the grunge movement. Sixteen-year-old Maggie Lynch is uprooted from big-city Chicago to a windswept town on the Irish Sea. Surviving on care packages of Spin magazine and Twizzlers from her rocker uncle Kevin, she wonders if she'll ever find her place in this new world.
When first love and sudden death simultaneously strike, a naive but determined Maggie embarks on a forbidden pilgrimage that will take her to a seedy part of Dublin and on to a life-altering night in Rome to fulfill a dying wish. Through it all Maggie discovers an untapped inner strength to do the most difficult but rewarding thing of all: live. The Carnival at Bray is an evocative ode to the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" generation and a heartfelt exploration of tragedy, first love, and the transformative power of music. The book won the 2014 Helen Sheehan YA Book Prize.

The Carnival at Bray by Jennifer Niven
This was my final read in the Morrison finalist award of The Hub Challenge and oh was it so, so GOOD! I rooted for Maggie as she traversed the many ups and downs of her sixteenth year. Uprooted from Chicago and jettisoned to Ireland, due to yet another one of her mother's marriages (failed relationship, results in another union), Maggie mourns leaving her grandmother, Ei, and her beloved godfather-uncle musician, Kevin. But life in Ireland holds surprises for Maggie-a constant friendship with nonagenarian, Dan Sean, falling deeply and truly in love with Eoin, questioning her relationship with her mother, and ultimately dealing with unbearable loss, all the while questioning who she really is. Maggie's voice was honest and full of contradictions. While she yearns for peace, a normal family, and acceptance--Maggie can't forget what her Uncle Kevin wrote: "Live and then Live some more." With Kurt Cobain tickets in hand from Uncle Kevin, Maggie embarks on a life changing adventure. I recommend this book for adults (adults will really get what Maggie (teens) wrestles with) and young adults will love the drama, angst, and romance of first love. Maggie is one rockin' protagonist, I will not forget!
    Love this novel!
This book was amazingly written. Between the development of characters, the mesmerizing prose and the story itself, it's clear that Jessie is going to be a writer that captivates audiences for a really long time. The cultural references of the time and the angst of the characters, I was brought back to my own high school experience. This novel is a great read for teens figuring out who they are, and adults who enjoy a great read and reliving their youth. Five Stars!
The Carnival at Bray weaves a story of love and friendship in the sophisticated
The Carnival at Bray weaves a story of love and friendship in the sophisticated, yet, very real voice of Maggie Lynch. Foley brilliantly tells the story of young Maggie Lynch who personifies every teenager's angsts- fitting in, finding love, rebellion, navigating friendships and becoming an adult. The story effortlessly takes us on this teenager's journey while providing delightful nostalgia for those of us lucky enough to be teens in the 90's.

    Beautifully written and narrated
What made the experience of listening to Song of the Mountain the most enjoyable?
This book was a pleasure to listen to. It is elegantly written, with word choices and language that evoked the time and place of ancient China with a touch of magic thrown in. I found myself caught up in the story of Song and his journey to uncover his mysterious past. He is a character to whom many children can relate, and I think they will feel his successes and failures as keenly as I did. The author seemed to have great insight into human character in portraying Songs struggles to forgive old enemies and take on his role to fulfill a prophecy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Song of the Mountain?
The author painted vivid, descriptive scenes without weighing down the prose that left me with many poignant memories. In my mind, I could see the river and the mountain where Song lived, his little hut, and the opulent grounds of the Lord who owned it all. With some books, I find myself forgetting early details of the plot once I've reached the climax, but not so with this book. It has made a lasting impression on me that I won't soon forget.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I especially loved the character of Karina, Songs only friend, and the inspiring example she is for him. My favorite scene happened when Song must face Karina after his thoughtless actions wounded her feelings. Somehow, she finds it in her to forgive, and the two are strong friends once again. I think this teaches children that even though they will make mistakes, they can make amends and all will be right with the world again.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I really enjoyed listening to the audio version of the novel during a recent road trip, and thought the length was perfect for children. The narrator did a superb job of reading the story, with distinct voices for each character, so it almost seemed as if more than one person were reading. I would definitely recommend this audio book to children and parents alike.
    Delightfully moving!
What made the experience of listening to Song of the Mountain the most enjoyable?
Song of the Mountain is a great story of self-discovery. It is very engaging, haunting at times, and inspiring. I absolutely loved the underlining themes and how Ms. Isenhoff parodies the story of Cane and Able. This is a series I will continue to follow and read!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Song of the Mountain?
Often we are distracted from our true friends by the glimmer of those that appear to be more shiny.

Lyle Hertzog and his friends Marilla and Dave are the Qwikpick Adventure Society, three kids who seek out adventure in their seemingly quiet hometown of Crickenburg.
On the hunt for their next big adventure - something to top the Fountain of Poop, if that's even possible - the kids overhear a construction worker telling his buddies about a rat with a human face he saw in the basement of an old research facility. The decision is unanimous: The next adventure for the Qwikpick Society is on! But when their trip to find the rat doesn't go quite as expected, the trio gets in big trouble.
Will the second adventure for the Qwikpick Society also be their last?
    Members Reviews:
Quirky details seem just odd enough to be true.
Summary: This is the second of the Qwikpick Papers, three sets of papers supposedly found by Tom Angleberger in an old Qwikpick gas station in Crickenburg, Virginia. It reports on the escapades of Lyle, Dave, and Marilla, the three 11-year-old members of the Qwikpick Adventure Society. In their first adventure, they searched for and found a poop fountain. This adventure begins when the three friends overhear an electrician at the Qwikpick (where Lyleâs parents work) talking about his encounter with a rat with a human face in the basement of an old research lab. The kids decide finding this rat will be their next adventure. Of course, just about everything goes wrong, and in the end Marillaâs father bans her from Qwikpick membership. There are a few glimmers of hope, thoughâthe kids actually see the rat, and could that be a romance beginning between Kyle and Marilla? A sequel is all but guaranteed. The kidsâ voices are so genuine, it is hard to believe they didnât really write this report. Tom Angleberger, author of the Origami Yoda series, is a master of quirky details that seem just odd enough to be true, like the stuffed Andrew Jackson doll in the Quikpick crane game.
    Parents- Please Read Page 62
My 5th grader was reading this book and pointed out that on page 62 (hardcover version) the kid named Dave in the story tells a story about a guy who fell asleep and was dreaming of 2 naked ladies kissing him and woke up to find out that rats were eating his face. On page 63 is a drawing of the supposed guy dreaming with rats at his face and a dream bubble coming up from his head with a drawing of the dream.. There are no private body parts showing- just the 2 women's bare backs. Regardless, I personally find this story and image to be extremely inappropriate for my child. I work hard to raise my child with strong moral values. I will not be allowing my son to read any more of this author's books.
    Face-Paced, Fun Adventure for Tweens
THE RAT WITH THE HUMAN FACE by Tom Angleberger is the second silly adventure in The QuikPick Papers series.
In a followup to the infamous Poop Fountain incident, the Qwikpick Adventure Society trio investigate an abandoned research facility looking for a rumored rat with a human face. The story is told as a semi-official report detailing their exploits along with the consequences.
The bookâs scrapbook appearance with taped in photos, drawings, typewritten pages, handwritten notes, and other visually interesting elements will be popular with young readers.
Fans of Tom Angleberger who enjoy tales of harmless troublemaking will be eager to jump into his latest, fast-paced adventure.

Thrilled by the Good, Evil, Magic, and Corruption in WONDER AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD
In the note at the end of WONDER AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, author Nicole Helget shares that she was inspired to pen this middle grade novel by the question âwhereâs the great American adventure book for girls?â. Her tale is crafted from classic American adventure tropes like journeying, discovery and friendship, as it follows one Hallelujah Wonder and her best friend Eustace from dusty rural Kansas to the bustling sea port of New Bedford, Massachusetts and finally to the icy and dangerous continent of Antarctica.
Lu Wonderâs father was a daring scientist and naturalist who spent more time travelling the globe in search of artifacts, treasures and information than he did with his wife and young daughters. After discovering Antarctica for the US and surviving a confrontation with cannibals, he comes home with a mysterious and magical object called the Medicine Head and with a new enemy: the greedy naval ship captain Cornelius Greeney. The Wonder family flees to Tolerone, Kansas, where Mr. Wonder hides his collection of treasures and tries his hand at pig farming, dreaming of the museum he plans to open one day. But, Captain Greeney follows him and murders him, leaving Luâs mother silent and withdrawn and Luâs older sister, Priss. with all the responsibilities of a grown-up.
Lu, like her father, has a scientific bent, which isnât easy for a girl in the 19th century to express. Luckily, her best friend Eustace, a slave in a nearby household, also has a quick and interested mind. When Captain Greeney arrives in Tolerone and, fanning the flames of tension between the local slave holders and abolitionists, sets the town on fire, Lu knows she has to escape with the Medicine Head. Eustace knows he must escape, period.
Together, they travel to Massachusetts with Greeney hot on their heels and find a whaling ship captained by the elderly and eccentric Captain Abbott. Abbott and his first mate --- a wise, powerful and caring woman named Nova --- allow Lu and Eustace to travel with them to Antarctica. Along the way, the two children learn all about whaling and life at sea and more about Luâs father and the Medicine Head.
Hallelujah Wonder is a headstrong and curious girl and not a character who is always likeable. She is impatient and often condescending to Eustace, who is a gentle and compelling young man. Over the course of the story, both Lu and Eustace change a lot.
