Twain is just magnificent and, while this is not one of my favorite works from him, it's quite satisfying. He begins by following many of the major tropes of ghost stories--sounds in the night, cold touches, footprints in dust--setting things up for what could be an okay, if predictable ghost story. And then, just when most authors would have us confront the ghost and end the story with a quick shock, he turns everything quite friendly and ends on a laugh.

It's a bit unfortunately that the focal point of this story, the Cardiff Giant hoax, will be pretty much unknown to modern readers. However, with a little adaptation, this story could become a really good campfire tale for younger kids. Make them a bit edgy, but finish bright.

The " Quintessential " O Henry story!

I am self educated (never went to college and don't even know if I spelled "quintessential" right !)and frankly -I'm not sure anyone on this earth is qualified to "review" an O Henry story. But I'll share this: O Henry (a Nom de Plume,fancy French for "Pen Name") wrote stories about the human condition as it affected everyday man (or woman), often his characters were people from the "lower eschelons" of life, ordinary people like you or I(no Angelinas or Clooneys in his stories ). He writes about the irony of life and his stories always have a "twist" in them. As far as this story goes it is a perfect example of the saying "Man makes a Plan ,and God laughs". Sad funny and poignant at the same time, you won't be sorry you read this time honored classic. How's that for a 58 yr old chick who took her GED drunk on Wild Turkey( my best friend in High School ,an Air Force Colonel's daughter got me drunk on the way to the test!Ha-Ha) when I was 17 . Ironically I recieved one of the highest scores in the state -I think O Henry would have laughed!The Cop and the Anthem

Pleasant, short, and stays with you. Funny how his stories always seem to do that. Soapy is a relatable character, and his attempts at obtaining shelter are believable, and quite amusing.

A Clever Pleasant Short Story - Vintage O Henry

If you wish to obtain a quick idea of the typical O Henry short story, this is your chance. O Henry composes short stories that are clever, not usually painful, and with an unusual turn of phrase that becomes recognizable. As often as not there is an ironic ending to the story. Normally his stories can be read easily in one sitting. I cannot say this is my favorite O Henry story, but it is a great example of his work.

O Henry might also aid and abet your vocabulary. In this case, for me, in this story, eleemosynary and welkin.

Review for story quality, not price. Buy an anthology, not the individual story!

Proto-vampire/zombie type story? I'm unsure. An undertaker becomes trapped in a storage vault, and must build a pile of caskets to get free. The final casket in the pile breaks as he steps upon it, revealing a troubling truth to the investigators. Ill feelings between two men have led to a sacrilege against a corpse, and anger from beyond the grave.

This seems more like a Poe story to me. It doesn't have Lovecraft's general cosmic horror, unfathomable amorality to it. And I like that. I am honestly not a big fan of Lovecraft's Cthulu mythos works. They're a bit too speculative to me. This story give readers a nice basis in the real worl on which to draw their horror.

This is one of the few Lovecraft stories not in the public domain. Rather than buying individually, though, I'd recommend getting a collection of his short stories, for better financial sense.

"An Aural Gem"

"In the Vault" was a super treat for my ears. I loved the spooky story by H.P. Lovecraft but to hear it the way K. Anderson Yancy performed it was a real treat. I thought the SonicMovie style was exceptional and I look forward to listening to more. I was able to close my eyes and get the real feel of the story. It really enhances an already good story and makes it great.

All I can think is WOW! I even listened to it twice so far. Loved it. It is indeed like listening to a movie. A Sonic Movie. I would definitely recommend giving this a listen.
