While this is a good text of the original story By Poe, it is important to know that it is NOT "Annotated."

While there is a separate book about Poe included with this, making well worth the price, the actual story is not annotated

with additional information, references, and historical information usually found within an annotated work.

Almost seems you are there....

The very first sentence sucks you into the story. It is a short story of revenge. I honestly didn't find anything to dislike. A story of fiction but it does describe, in my opinion, the darkness of humanity. Most human beings would not dare act this story out. But I'm sure lots of us have imagine scenarios at one point in our lives where we would like to play it out in reality.

This is an abridged recording, not unabridged as the description states.

Very disappointed with this audio version. The sample recording sounded great, which is why I purchased it. The description says "unabridged" and it is not. There are parts missing making it hard for a student to follow along with the text. Hoping I can get a refund.

Great job

This is one of my favorite stories. The translation was great. I love the way the translations have hyperlinks. I think all dual language kindle books should be set up this way.

Twain is just magnificent and, while this is not one of my favorite works from him, it's quite satisfying. He begins by following many of the major tropes of ghost stories--sounds in the night, cold touches, footprints in dust--setting things up for what could be an okay, if predictable ghost story. And then, just when most authors would have us confront the ghost and end the story with a quick shock, he turns everything quite friendly and ends on a laugh.

It's a bit unfortunately that the focal point of this story, the Cardiff Giant hoax, will be pretty much unknown to modern readers. However, with a little adaptation, this story could become a really good campfire tale for younger kids. Make them a bit edgy, but finish bright.

the cover shows a pretty funny scene

Far more amusing than scary, despite the cover (though, really, the cover shows a pretty funny scene, either way). A man converses with a skeleton, who bemoans how the neighborhood has gone downhill. "You can't take it with you" is proven rather false, as the skeleton praises the more elaborate mausoleums and well-made coffins. And petty rivalries are proven to be rather universal, as he points out the more unsavory members of the graveyard and lists their misdeeds.

This might actually be a fun read for kids, since it gives such an unnerving start, and then goes way the other direction, into humor. I could also see it being adapted into a little stage play. It's just a quick, light read.
