Publisher's Summary:
Who ever heard of a plain and downright homely heroine? Isn't a heroine by definition beautiful? Well, Edna Ferber, in her well known style that later produced Show Boat and Giant, tells us about just such a heroine in this special short story. It is special to me because of her insight into the deep courage and faith of 'ordinary' people, people like most of us. And of course our failings and frailties and sometimes, the prince does not marry the right person. Yep.
Members Reviews:
satisfying read!
The heroine of this story is Pearlie, a fat, plain, sensitive stemographer. Her secret power is her ability to cook. Her personality is refreshingly lovable too. In the end, Pearlie wins. She triumhs by being herself, and not by changing to please a desirable man or this" pretty packaging counts" world..
There is irony here too, and is framed by another story. It's one of those tales you'll feel compelled to share with your friends.
Highly recommended!
