Twelve-year-old Ruby Clyde Henderson's life turns upside down the day her mother's boyfriend holds up a convenience store and her mother is wrongly jailed for assisting with the crime. Ruby and her pet pig, Bunny, find their way to her estranged Aunt Eleanor's home. Aunt Eleanor is an ornery nun who lives in the midst of a peach orchard on Paradise Ranch. With a little patience, she and Ruby begin to get along. But Eleanor has secrets of her own - secrets that might mean more hard times for Ruby.
It's not going to be easy for Ruby Clyde and Eleanor to heal old wounds, face the past, and learn to trust each other. But with enough little pieces of love, they might be able to bring their family together again and learn that paradise isn't a place - it's the feeling of being home.
Corabel Shofner's Almost Paradise is a bighearted novel about trust, belonging, and the struggles and joys of loving one another.

A Book for All Ages
Ruby Clyde Henderson is as delightful a character as youâre likely to run across in a lifetime of reading. Twelve years old, suddenly on her own, sheâs sassy, smart, inquisitive, â there arenât enough adjective to adequately describe her. Sheâs just plain one-of-a-kind.
When she renames the low-life her mother has taken up with âCatfish,â we know who this man is, what he looks like, and what he is capable of. When she names her pet pig Bunny, we know this creature is soft and cuddly, and he will be faithful to the girl who has rescued him from the circus where he was being held. That her Aunt Helen lives in the middle of a peach orchard speaks volumes about the place where Ruby Clyde finally finds refuge.
Her quips are wonderfully on target: âBullies are all the same. When I find one, I beat them up.â ââpeople tell you not to lie but they hardly ever want to hear the truth.â âIf you wait for perfect you will end up with nothing.â
This is a book to treasure. Buy two copies, so you have a spare to give to anyone who needs a laugh, an example of pure spunk overcoming adversity, a wild ride across the country until our heroine finally finds a home.
P.S. This is not a middle grade book. Itâs a book for all ages.
This book is a sparkling gem no matter what your age!
To be totally transparent, Corabel Shofner and I go way back. In our 20âs we were living the life of bohemian artists in NYC. Bel as she was called then, always expressed a desire to write and now she has done it and we who read her work are the better for it. Having read to the two children I raised and stayed interested in what they read once they became independent readers, I can attest that ALMOST PARADISE is right up there with the works of such writers as Lois Lowry, Kate DiCamillo, and Judy Blume.
I fell in love with the protagonist, Ruby Clyde and found myself wanting to hurry and get back to reading to find out what was going to happen to her next. I was surprised by several of the twist and turns she took in her young life and equally moved by her humorous insights and deep perceptions. This book is a gem no matter what your age!
So you think you wanted a pet pig !
Even though this is supposed to be a children's book, and I'm a 79 year old male, I read it anyway - since I know the author.
