I really liked the genies in this book! My favorite part is when they get the ring and when the grandpa tries to use the ring.

Great images, not-so-great writing

It's okay. Images are great but the author could have used a better copy editor. It's quite wordy. To take a page from Mark Twain, perhaps if they had more time, the book would have been shorter... and better.

Great for a classroom.

Tiny is a better-than-average good start to a Fantasy series

The narrator for this book was fabulous. I might check out the rest of the series because he has narrated all of them.

Even for - or especially because it was for - elementary aged children, I found it dragged too much. Like Greybeard and Grandfather talked/explained too much; long winded buggers!

I could compare the Tinys (sic) to the Littles, but the Littles were short stories and more enjoyable.

Also, religion was not brought into the picture in The Littles, but over a handful of mentions in this book.

I'm still scratching my head about how The Telling told the young Tinys (being under 1 foot tall) to beware of Bigs (our sized people). The reasoning was how Tinys would want to play with animals, we would want to play with them ... most animals would be too BIG even to them, for that analogy to make any sense!

It's better than a lot of books written for our younger readers.

I found this book to be more tedious and dry but I hope a future relationship with the author, editor, copy editor could polish up this gem could-be and deliver it with more finesse.

I love reading Young Adult fantasy series and the Adventures of Captain Xoey did not disappoint.

Steampunk for boys AND girls AND pirates!

This book was great! I love that the main character doesn't identify as a boy or a girl (Xoey is a pirate) so all kids can relate and see themselves in the story as Xoey! The steampunk elements are creative and interesting and the story is captivating!

Delightful Adventure

I waffled between 4 and 5 stars, but I was happy to settle on five. Some of the transitions were rather abrupt and could be a bit disorienting. However, as they went on I came to recognize them more as perhaps the author's effort to drive the pace.

And what a pace it was. The whole book was a grand, seat of your pants adventure, and I cannot wait to read more about Captain Xoey and friends!

Fast paced and descriptive

Adventures of Captain Xoey takes off and doesnât let you go throughout the tale.

The characters are fleshed out and given lives of their own, quickly yes, but in a way that does not seem wholly rushed.

The story itself is imaginative, easy to follow, and stays the course from start to end.

A well done new book!

Laura spins an exciting adventure, filled with colorful characters and thrilling stories. Her ability to blend the world seamlessly in with the story and plot is on par with that of Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey. A must buy for anyone who enjoys YA fiction, or has a child who loves to read.

This author does such a great job with these books.

Interesting

Wow that book was a lot different than I thought it would be! When I pictured once upon a toad I saw it completely differently!!!

Awesome book!!!

This book is so great! I read the Mother Daughter Book Club books and Absolutely Truly, and they were all really good so when I heard about this book I thought, oh, well it's by Heather Vogel Frederick so it should be good. And I was right!! It's better than good though, it's awesome. I would recommend this for 9-13 year old girls because nothing inappropriate happens or anything. I'm 13 and I liked it.

The main story is this: a girl named Cat, who's 12, has to go live with her dad, stepmom, stepsister, and half brother in Oregon for three months while her mother (who's an astronaut) is in space on a last minute mission. A bunch of weird stuff happens to her and Olivia (that's her stepsister) and they have to figure out why and how to stop it. That's about all I can say without giving the ending away.

But if you like mysteries and adventure books then you should read this! If you've already read it, and liked it, then you might like the Willow Falls series by Wendy Mass (and others by her) or Absolutely Truly by Heather Vogel Frederick, or Best Friend Next Door by Carolyn Mackler.

A definite YES!

We love Heather Vogel Frederick as an author. We were first introduced to her through her Mother Daughter Book Club Series. This was another hit with my teenage daughter who is an avid reader. It was very funny and a great read. It's tough to find good, happy, positive books these days for teenagers to read (girls or boys). During school she is required to read so much that is heavy and dark, we really work to find books that are upbeat and positive or just plain fun for down time reading. This hit the spot!

Loved this Book

What do two step-sisters who despise each other and are forced to sleep in the same bedroom end up having in common when one of the sister's mothers has to go on a trip to the international Space Station before her twelfth birthday and she forgets to tell her the real story about Great Aunt Aby? Why after Aunt Aby's visit is Cat having toads come from from her mouth every time she speaks and her nasty step-sister has flower's and diamonds? Everything seems to just get worse for Cat and the toads keep coming from her mouth while her step sister becomes Diamond Girl.

Great Book

My child loves soccer and Abby. She loved the book.

An enjoyable read

This was a quick read and I enjoyed it very much. I didn't know much about women's soccer prior to the World Cup a few years ago, so much of Abby's Pro career and certainly her high school/college days I wasn't aware of. I found it very interesting learning about Abby personally and professionally. Her brutal honesty must have been hard but freeing to write about and I applaud her for being so open. It seems like our "heroes" must be perfect and if not, then they are not our heroes anymore. Abby is a human and is also a soccer and feminist hero. Yes, you can be both. Thank you Abby!

A bit dissapointed

I purchased this as a gift for my young niece, who is an avid soccer player and a big fan of Abby. The description said a signed poster would be included - it was NOT. The cover also had a tear. I did not order a used copy. Although the content is fine, the product I received was certainly not what I was hoping to give as a gift.

Not Appropriate

I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter as it is "the young readers version". My daughter loves the game of soccer and we love inspirational stories. However, in my opinion, 2 chapters dedicated to Abby's lesbian secret and her lesbian relationship is a bit much for a young reader. Would theses chapters be included if she were in a heterosexual relationship? While this is now part of life and education and understanding is necessary for our children, I really don't want my 10 year daughter reading about Abby's coming out.

Is this about soccer?

Can't talk about soccer without going into her lesbian life. Really?

Great family-friendly fantasy

I thought this was a really sweet book. I wish I had listened to this with my kids because I can see that people of all ages will enjoy it. I think the writing was great and every character and situation came alive in my imagination. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by June Skye. She was great! I haven't listened to anything narrated by her before, but I will definitely search her out now. She gave each character such a unique and fitting voice that it really added to the text. If you like family-friendly fantasy, this book is a must-read.

An Excellent Book for Children and Adults!

Lucy in Her Secret Wood by Christina M. Pagès

Inspired by William Wordsworthâs Lucy poems, Pagès creates her own journey of Lucy, an eight-year old girl dropped off in the English woods by her stepfather. Like Wordsworth, Pagès successfully uses everyday language with âa certain coloring of the imagination.â (1) Pagès selects incidents and situations from common life much the way Wordsworth did with his lyrical ballads, which he published with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. That book was hugely popular in 1798, one year that marked the Romantic Movement in English literature.

Pagès carries out the tradition of romanticism when Lucy names various things she discovers in the woods. The tree that Lucy inhibits is âGrandpaâ tree, the small creek is named âBrook,â the singular deer is aptly named âAlone.â The names contribute to the overall belief that Lucy is an amazingly curious child about the wilderness rather than a frightened child. At first we donât believe Lucy will survive in the woods, but Pagès asks us to take a leap of faith that Lucy will. We want to take that leap because we infer Lucy was brought up in a broken home. We hope she never has to return to her dirty little room with a tiny window.

Pagès manages to orchestrate issues here that appeal to a wide audience on various levels: beauty, love, longing, and death. Meeting strangers is not always a bad thing: Will, also aptly-named, is a boy that becomes her best friend. Authority figures are often mean, but also nave, kind, and loving. Lucyâs interactions with humans in the real world drive the story forward, and we never know the outcome of the next interaction. As a result, there is a good deal of surprise from one chapter to the next.

An undercurrent of the narrative thread is whether Lucy can survive in a world that is not always lyrical. We infer that we cannot survive emotionally or spiritually without music no matter where we live.

Fun family story for middle grade students

I just spent a delightful afternoon reading this book before giving it to my grandchildren. What a fun book! It's part fairy tale, part humorous look at life through the eyes of a mother and child. I loved the insights into being the favored child and being the forgotten one. And as a former teacher/librarian, I loved the comments about adults and "people in charge". Though there are some sticky situations that the children get into, I liked the fact that they learned that difficult times don't last forever. I can't wait to read this to my grandchildren!

Great for 8-12 year olds

This is children's literature at its best. It is beautifully written, compassionate, funny, imaginative, honest. If it reaches its audience, it will become an instant classic.

My seven year old loved this book! Her favorite part was "the funny parts." A truly unique voice in children's literature We can't wait to read her next book!

It's Like a Modern Fairy Tale of Sorts

One thing readers won't have trouble with in regard to The Trouble with Twins is the the amount of time it takes to read - as a fairly quick reader I breezed through this book in just about an hour and a half. Even slower readers won't have too much trouble with the easy to digest writing that Kathryn Siebel uses to tell the story of twins who get separated and their desire to be together again. The story reads like a more modern version of a fairy tale in some ways. There is some humor and plenty of things to overcome as well as the to-be-expected lessons learned. The book comes off more as a tale about not judging by appearances or expectations, but getting to know the person for who they are. It's not heavy handed. It is a bit silly at times. The illustration style didn't really jive with me, but readers who appreciate having the text broken up will enjoy the fact that there are pictures present. Chapters are short, too. While I enjoyed reading the book, I didn't love it and am not finding it entirely memorable.
