John Timmons' life is planned and orderly. He cares for his mother and four younger brothers, and their future depends on him to keep their Colorado ranch profitable. Ember Farrar (Bert) has run away from her lawbreaking family in search of a new life. But, when she attempts to return a horse that her brother had stolen, ranch hands believe she is a thief and a boy, and they plan to hang her.
John, who is also a deputy marshal, breaks up the hanging. After paying for the stolen horse, he takes the boy home to work off the debt. Later he learns Bert is a girl - one who refuses to tell him who she is and why she possessed a stolen horse.
When ranchers report stolen cattle, Bert is a natural suspect. John is touched by Bert's sweet spirit and natural gift for music. Surely she's not a cattle thief. Bert fears for their lives when she is forced to either help her brothers steal or put the Timmons in danger. When John thinks Bert has betrayed him, he ignores God and turns revengeful.
Will John learn who Bert truly is? Will their lives ever return to normal?

    Would not recommend
The story line is very shallow, and doesn't keep your interest, would not recommend this book, I didn't even finish listening.
    Good story, good voices, but...
    Any additional comments?
you can hear the narrator swallowing throughout the entire book...very annoying.
It's a good story, loved the Christian aspect best.
    Brilliant Story
This story is captivating from beginning to end! The author has strategically thought out the plots and characters! I got lost in the story. It was even better the second time when I could process more information. The narrator also did a great job. Her voice influx kept the story much more intriguing.
    Great Story!
What did you love best about The Fire in Ember?
I love stories that remind me, that no what your past, your are loved by God and He can forgive, bring healing, and give us a new life.
    Wholesome!
Good listen! Nice story, pretty much G rated. Good narration. I will listen to more from this author.

    odd
    Any additional comments?
this was an odd book. I didn't mind the story, it wasn't exactly edge of your seat thriller or anything. The romance was kind of thrown into the mix but not developed to the extent that you would really think they were madly in love. It was read okay and written fine enough to be a light entertaining, unbelievable type tale. Wouldn't necessarily recommend it but also wouldn't say not to listen.
Slow in the Beginning, Rushed at the End
This is a pretty good book, the reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the story is kinda of slow at the beginning, but not too slow as to make me want to stop listening but slow enough that if a missed a few seconds or minutes of the story I didn't worry about about rewinding it to see of I missed anything. To me the ending was very rushed. It seemed like only the last two chapters addressed rapping the story up. All in all it is worth a credit and it is an enjoyable story.

    Breathtaking
I absolutely loved this! Dekker's descriptions are so vivid that I could picture the people and places. This story is a great allegory of God's love for us. The story is absorbing and suspenseful. I will listen to it again.
Not one of Ted Dekker's best
I have listened to several of Mr. Dekker's books and this one, while good, is definately not his best. It took over half the book to get to the best part of the story. Seems to be a prequil to the Red, White and Black Trilogy but I am only guessing on that. The best part of the book is the last two hours after all the character development is done. If you like Ted, you will like this book.
    Must Read!
This is a great book. If you have read Red, White, Black (or similar) this is a must read! I loved it ....
    Always a Dekker fan
I have to admit that for the first 1/2 I was thinking either my audio was titled incorrectly or something was really wrong with Ted. As I went on, I found the Ted I know and love. I do appreciate the story and will say I enjoyed it. Although it is not a favorite, I would still recommend it to anyone who likes vampire stories.
    loved it!
Im not one who enjoys vampire stories or dark stories...but this has a love story that is griping...I enjoyed this book to the end. Love, of course, is the is the story line but with sacrifice, determination, passion and a unique way of explaining true love vs endulgences. Ted Dekker has an imagination that is limitless, and with this fiction tale it spins a story that has truth to it......its different but enjoyable.

Mispronunciations Distract Reader to Good Story
The performer, Ms. Meyers did not perform either the Dragonkeeper Chronicles or the first book of the Chiril Dragons series The Vanishing Sculptor/Dragons of Chiril. It became abundantly clear in the first few minutes of this recording that was either she not coached or trained on the pronunciations established in the previous recorded novels, with kimens now being pronounced Keymons (like Pokemons). and poor tumanhofers names being mangled at every turn. It is very distracting and takes away from a story consistent with other offerings in Ms. Paul's series which offer wholesome quality spiritual fantasy adventures which have just the right balance of action, humor (I absolutely love the wizard Fenworth), but the performance by Ms. Meyer could have benefited with some simple consistencies with previous audio work done on these two series. Who knows, perhaps kimens (read: Kih-mums) should have always been Key-mons, but since I've never heard differently until now, I'm struggling to get used to it and absorb the story with the attention it deserves.

    Members Reviews:
I too was a victim of abuse.
Since I was a victim of spousal abuse I could totally relate with the words spoken, the responses, the fear and the helplessness of not knowing where to turn or what to do. Although, I have a different background then Kim, she had some unique situations she had to overcome. One thing I noticed that others may not, is that a man that has the tendency to be abusive and controlling can pick out a woman who has low self esteem and therefore easily controlled. At the party at the beginning of the book Nick saw an opportunity and took full advantage of it. He had the sweet "perfect" words to make him seem trustful and caring. Once in that abusive situation, it is very hard to break the mold. The fear itself is controlling.
I feel this book did a good job in showing the progression of the controlling devices used by such men. They find your weak points and play them to the hilt. Then they turn the blame on you and you hear it so much you actually believe it. These men are very manipulative and calculating in what they do. Not allowing you out of their site except to go to work. Cutting off friendships and not allowing others. Jealousy beyond all reason. Been there and done that.
Jesus too was my savior out of my situation. After 27 years of trying to make my marriage work I finally was able to leave. I had left once before but he did that sweet talk thing and coaxed me back home. I stayed because I had more control over the situation with my children then I did outside of the house. Sometimes you have to sacrifice for the children as well. Kim actually got out early, that is unusual. But again, her situation is unique as is each situation that abuse is present.
It is now 22 years that I have lived away from my husband and I am happy and well adjusted thanks to the Lord. I enjoy my children and my grandchildren. I am truly blessed. Their is hope. I pray this book helps other women have the strength to reach out for help. There is help available if you are ready to reach out for it. But, as the book shows, you have to be ready.
I read one review that was disappointed that the book didn't cover rape in marriage as an abuse. I dealt with that in my marriage and it would be good to be addressed in another situation but this book already had some serious issues that it was dealing with so I think that element would have been too much. It already dealt with cutting, guilt, death, abuse, low self esteem, being in the foster care system, lack of love and nurturing growing up and much more. One book can't deal with everything.

    Members Reviews:
The Brethren was a roller coaster ride
I finally finished the last book of the series. I wanted to get through this last book quickly to get to the end. It has been a roller coaster ride, the ups and the downs. One minute Iâm happy Annie and Ben were getting together, as well as Lou and Sam, but then the author switched it up, which I was disappointed about.
Once you read the first 2 books of this series, you have to read this last one to see what happens with everyone! There were many different scenarios going on with several people. I guess I wanted a little different ending with Lou and Sam, and with âreligion â verses the freedom with Jesus. However, Beverly Lewis shows both, being under the law, and under the Grace of Jesus which I was glad about. ( I personally have Jesus as my savior).
I have to say this book had my emotions going up and down, but thatâs what a great author can do, and she truly did!
The end of a trilogy is always a sad moment. This is a good read.
The three books in this trilogy are well written and lead well one to another. As the characters mature and learn to find the best way to work out their lives the reader is gracefully led to the evolution of the plot.
Watching Ben and Annie resolve their differences and come to a resolution of what they will do with their lives is a wonderful time to spend reading.
Like so many authors there are a few hanging threads but they do not detract from the end of the book.
    A Definite Fan
I love the writings of Beverly Lewis. I find myself having a hard time putting them down. I have read several of her books and plan to read all that are available.
Correspondence changed a bad to excellent review
After a rocky start I had the best correspondence and a fabulously excellent book delivered. I will shop here again.
Filled With Mystery, Love, and Jesus
Surprises are following Annie everywhere she steps! This novel finishes off the amazing lives of the Amish people - their conservative ways, their tight-knit family ties, and all the time sharing the Gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ. Wonderful author, thank you Beverly Lewis!
