    Title: The Evil Wizard Smallbone
    Author: Delia Sherman

Length: 8 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-10-17
    Publisher: Listening Library
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
In a hilarious tale reminiscent of T. H. White, a lost boy finds himself an unlikely apprentice to the very old, vaguely evil, mostly just grumpy Wizard Smallbone.
When 12-year-old Nick runs away from his uncle's in the middle of a blizzard, he stumbles onto a very opinionated bookstore. He also meets its guardian, the self-proclaimed Evil Wizard Smallbone, who calls Nick his apprentice and won't let him leave but won't teach him magic, either. It's a good thing the bookstore takes Nick's magical education in hand, because Smallbone's nemesis - the Evil Wizard Fidelou - and his pack of shape-shifting bikers are howling at the borders. Smallbone might call himself evil, but compared to Fidelou, he's practically a puppy. And he can't handle Fidelou alone.
Wildly funny and cozily heartfelt, Delia Sherman's latest is an eccentric fantasy adventure featuring dueling wizards, enchanted animals, and one stray boy.

    American mythmaking at its best!
If Steven King and Neil Gaiman set out to write Harry Potter, this is where they would end up.
The narration is excellent, the story and setting engaging, and it flies by. Great car trip material, especially with kids.

    A lovely Christmas story
So how did Father Christmas get to be who we know today, this story answers that question. Suitable for pretty much any age. Youngsters will appreciate the flying reindeer who lives to pee on people and adults will love a well told, and well read, tale

Chloe on the Bright Side by Courtney Sheinmel is an awesome new book from author Courtney Sheinmel
The Kindness Club: Chloe on the Bright Side by Courtney Sheinmel is an awesome new book from author Courtney Sheinmel. It explores what it means to be kind, and how sometimes it's not always so easy to do the right thing. This book has a great lesson for all it's readers, but it's not preachy and is so much fun to read.
Chloe and her mother move to a new town after her parents' divorce, so that her mother can take a job as an office manager. Chloe is not happy about this, but tries to make the best of the situation. When she starts school, she tries to keep the positive thought that she'll make great new friends, and she does. She is approached by the IT Girls, and tries to fit in with them, even if it means having her mother French braid her hair or buying $100 pants in order to be like the other girls.
Chloe isn't comfortable with the group, but doesn't want to be an outcast. Being their own quirky selves doesn't seem to bother Lucy and Theo, and Chloe is drawn to them, especially after they work together on a project. The head of the IT Girls doesn't approve of the new friends. Chloe also has to deal with her father's new girlfriend, who has a daughter Chloe's age. Chloe is jealous that her father is spending more time with this girl than with her, but she still tries to be nice. The project that Chloe works on with Theo and Lucy involves being kind to others. Chloe finds out that not only does this benefit others, but it benefits her, too. The only problem is that the IT Girls only seem to benefit themselves.
Chloe is a fantastic middle grade character. Even though bad things happen in her life, she tries to remain positive. There should be more of these positive examples in literature, and yet there aren't. (Exception-- Hurwitz's The Summer I Saved the World in 65 Days.) She very realistically wants to be popular, but also realistically doesn't particularly like the popular girls. Her struggles with her family are ring very true. The bright cover makes this endlessly appealing. I'm looking forward to more books in this series. I wish that the IT Girls had been a little nicer, and Lucy and Theo had been less quirky. This would make the choice between the two groups harder.

    Title: Journey's End
    Author: Rachel Hawkins

Length: 6 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-25-16
    Publisher: Listening Library
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Rachel Hawkins brings us a riveting middle grade fantasy-adventure perfect for fans of Lisa Graff.
The town of Journey's End may not literally be at the end of the world, but it sure feels like it to Nolie Stanhope. Spending the summer with her scientist father in the tiny Scottish village isn't exactly Nolie's idea of a good time, but she soon finds a friend: native Journey's Ender Bel McKissick.
While Nolie's father came to Journey's End to study the Boundary - a mysterious fog bank offshore - Bel's family can't afford to consider it a threat. The McKissicks' livelihood depends on the tourists drawn by legends of a curse. Still, whether you believe in magic or science, going into the Boundary means you'll never come back.
Unless you do. Albert Etheridge, a boy who disappeared into the Boundary in 1914, suddenly returns - without having aged a day and with no memory of the past 100 years. Then the Boundary starts creeping closer to the town, threatening to consume everyone within.
While Nolie's father wants to have the village evacuated, Bel's parents lead the charge to stay in Journey's End. Meanwhile, Albert and the girls look for ways to stop the encroaching boundary, coming across an ancient Scottish spell that requires magic, a quest, and a sacrifice.

    A Good End
Wow! A typical summer vacation becomes a magical quest in this wonderful middle grades adventure. Nolie travels from Georgia to visit her father, who is studying and odd phenomenon in Scotland. She thinks it will jut be a chance for the two of them to reconnect after 6 months apart. Instead, she finds herself drawn into helping save the entire town from a curse hundreds of years old, while making some new friends along the way.
Living close to Dollywood and the madness that is the tourist season here in East Tennessee, I suppose I can relate a little to the townsfolk and their reliance on the tourists who come to see the "Boundary." But that commonality can only stretch so far, since we don't have a cursed fog that swallows up boats, people, and even pieces of the town. Nolie's fascination with ghosts and the supernatural is like that of many other who enjoy watching TV shows about paranormal investigators. It seems odd in comparison to her father's focus on science, but at least they are interested in the same thing, even if it is manifested in different ways.
This might have just remained a story of scientific vs. magical world views, except that the author also includes some very real descriptions of what friendship is like during late preteen and early teenage years. Nolie's new friend, Bel, has experienced the loss of her best friend to the new girl at school and has been dreading her summer alone. And both girls meet Albert and have to deal with the awkwardness of boys and girls being friends at that age when everyone seems so aware of gender differences. There is also the tension of parents and children not agreeing on the best way to solve a problem.
The characters are entertaining and at times tug on your heartstrings as you read.

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-11-16
    Publisher: Scholastic Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
From Newbery Honor author Kirby Larson comes the moving story of a young boy who, with a dad fighting in Europe and a sister working at the Higgins Boat factory, longs to have a dog of his own.
Fish has a knack for inventing. His annoying neighbor, Olympia, has a knack for messing things up. But when his latest invention leads Fish to Liberty, a beautiful stray dog who needs a home, he and Olympia work together to rescue her. At the Higgins boatyard, where the boats that just might save the Allied forces during World War II are built, the wartime workforce is integrated and includes women and the disabled. However, a friendship that crosses racial lines is not the norm in 1940s New Orleans.
Fish, who suffered from polio and whose dad is away fighting in Europe, looks up to Mr. Higgins, and he's thrilled when one of his inventions helps Mr. Higgins' engineers unlock the mechanics of the landing crafts. Mr. Higgins inspires him to be bold and brave. As Fish enlists the help of unexpected friends and allies to save Liberty, he finds his perceptions of the world - of race and war, family and friendship - transformed.

Liberty: Great Historical Fiction for Middle Grade Readers
When Alan Gratz, a prolific NC author, presented a workshop at SCBWI-Carolinas in 2010 on Plot and Pacing, my blog was only a few years old and I was learning how to review books. Fast forward to 2016, and I've decided to integrate writing craft instruction as much as possible into my reviews.
LIBERTY (Scholastic, 2016), by Kirby Larson is the third in her Dogs of War series for readers in grades 3-7. As Gratz stated in the opening of his workshop, a good story must include conflict. "Kids won't read boring stuff." Authors must entertain early and set the tone of the book. How's this for the opening paragraph of LIBERTY:
Thomas Edison said, to invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. Fish Elliott had both. Unfortunately, he also had Olympia. Fish heard her before she even poked her braided head through the loose board in the fence between their yards. (p.1)
    What tone does that set?
Without one iota of info-dump, Larson shows the reader that Olympia isn't allowed to attend Fish's school because she's a Negro; his sister, Mo, works at Higgins Industries, which builds landing craft; his pop has enlisted in the war; Fish is battling the lingering effects of polio; and he's determined to rescue a dog from a mean neighbor.
    Not bad for ten pages.
Gratz, using material from Vogler's Writer's Journey, talked about the importance of internal and external goals, which are both resolved at the end. For Fish, his internal goal is to have his father not see him as a cripple. "Fish would do whatever it took to be the kind of son that his father really wanted." (p 28). His external goal is to keep Liberty, the dog he rescues more than once.
Larson added depth to her story by incorporating an important secondary character. Erich is a German soldier and a French prisoner of war near Algiers. Sprinkled throughout Fish's story which takes place in New Orleans, the reader learns about Erich's goal: "He was going to do whatever it took to stay concealed, to stay hidden. He could not let anyone see the Erich within.... It was his only chance of surviving." (p. 37)
Gratz said that the decision to act occurs in the first 25% of the book.

    Awesome story
Bought this for my granddaughter. She is eight and having lots of fun reading this story. We are both DC comics fans and this story is perfect. Not everything has to be filled with pictures. Fantastic. Looking forward to the other stories coming out.
This book is about the early years of Wonder Woman and is aimed at the high school age students.
I have been a longtime fan of Wonder Woman and when I saw this 238 hardcover book (Wonder Woman Super Hero High by Lisa Yee) on Amazon for a bargain price I purchased. This book is aimed at high school age teens but I still enjoyed the story.
This story is about the early years of Wonder Woman, Amazon Warrior and princess. She lives on Paradise Island and desires to attend Super Hero High where she can learn and meet other super heroes. The lessons she learns and the interaction with other well-known DC super heroes makes the book move along at a good pace.
There are underlying positive messages in this book and young high school age fans of Wonder Woman will enjoy reading this book.
