My 13 year old son loved this book (and the first)
My 13 year old son loved this book (and the first). My 42 year old friend recommended it. Good for the young and older. haha.
I want more now to read!!!
I love Jennifer Nielsen books, I can literally picture what's she writing.
Great Second Installment in the Horizon Series
Jennifer Nielsen picks up the Horizon book series pen from Scott Westerfeld and makes a seamless transition with Deadzone, the second and newest book in what is planned to be a seven-book series, each book written by a different author.
Ms. Nielsen continues this story of a group of young plane crash survivors (a robotics team on their way to an overseas competition) who land in the arctic, but find themselves in the middle of a jungle like none on Earth. I recommend reading Mr. Westerfeldâs book first; youâll want to know the story from the start, plus both books are so good you shouldnât miss any of the action. I read them back-to-back and, truly, it seemed as if I were reading one book. I admire the ability of an author who can take a story and characters developed by another and make them her/his own. The educator in me would love to sit in on the mechanics of how all this happens.
There is so much for readers to like in this series. There are science fiction and supernatural elements. Thereâs action, mystery, and suspense. Thereâs friendship and conflict. The ability of these books to engage a variety of readers makes them excellent additions to any classroom or library. One of my favorite things about this series is its appeal to students with engineering minds. What a great recommendation for students in our robotics club!
Iâm a big fan of books by Jennifer Nielsen and Deadzone is no exception. She keeps us reading with fast-paced action, captivating characters, vivid descriptions, and just the right amount of suspense. Readers will enjoy this next installment in the series, which will have them eagerly awaiting the next book.
Thanks to Edelweiss for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
From Tween Reviewer
This book is about a couple of kids whose plane crashes on a secret island near Antarctica. My favorite parts of this book were when they have to try to cross the Blood Sand, a perilous desert with little to no water, and for a good reason. My favorite character in this book is Yoshi, a Japanese-American character that has an awesome sword and lots of independence. There are also others, like Molly, the leader; Oliver, the Math Whiz; Kira and Akiko, two Japanese sisters; and Javi, a friendly guy who tries to always be positive, especially in the worst situations.
