A Book for Youngsters and Adults as Well

I found this book to be written for a younger audience but interesting to read for adults like me as well. If you'd like a quick read about this subject this would be the book for you to read. It obviously doesn't go into the detail that other books on this subject do but it will give you a wonderful synopsis of what took place exactly 100 years ago on December 6th. The book also contains numerous photographs showing the devastation that took place in addition to photos of individuals involved. There are three other more involved books on this tragedy and I would also suggest you read one or more of them as well. This is the third book on this subject I have read and I have found all of them to be riveting reading.

Very interesting!

We are traveling to Halifax this next fall so I bought this to find out some background behind the city. I honestly had never heard of this disaster until I saw the book listed in the Kindle store. I read it fast, really kept my attention. The follow up on the victims was very interesting. If I had any complaint at all would be that it was too short, I felt that I wanted to know more but I also realize that the author did a good job of covering all she could.

A terrible explosion in Halifax, Nova Scotia that truly ignited a blizzard of glass.

If you are unfamiliar with the explosion in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1917 then this book would be of interest to you. The book has a fairly large print and many contemporary photos. There are other books that are much more detailed but this book is certainly a good beginning. The explosion was the strongest in the world before the advent of the atomic bomb. It was early morning and people (including children) rushed out to see what the initial explosions had been. Many people simply looked out their windows and after the following blasts were terribly injured by flying glass. This story is familiar to people in Boston because every year the city's Christmas tree is sent by the people of Halifax. Boston managed to get the first train through to the city filled with medical personnel and supplies. The tree is Halifax's thank you. It is sad that this story is unfamiliar to most Americans as it was to me until a visit to Halifax twenty years ago.

Recommend to students for independent reading

While there is a lot of talk about teaching with informational texts - to align with the Common Core, there is not necessarily as much about students just reading, reading, reading these texts - independently. Students still read mostly fiction when they choose a book for independent reading, right? Sally Walker is a "go to" author when trying to get students to pick up nonfiction text for personal choice time reading.

Some funny parts, but too scary for my young kids

Loper has rented an old abandoned ranch for winter feeding and Hank gets stuck there with a crazy cat that has also been stuck there for 2 years. Most of the book is about the interaction between Hank and the crazy cat. There is very little Drover, Slim, or other major characters. It was medium to medium-low on the Hank funny list and the crazy cat has a lot of scenes with intense music and her intense crazy voice that actually creeped my 5 year old and 8 year old out. They didn't have nightmares or anything, but they didn't enjoy the book and asked me to stop playing (a rare occurrence for Hank the Cowdog). The series is great, but this book is not. If you want a Cat story, try The Twisted Kitty, which is a Hank classic.

We love all the Hank the Cowdog books and even though i love to read--John Erickson does a MUCH better job than i ever could. Our whole family (including a 16 year old and even my husband) listens to these books on long car trips. Everyone enjoys them. The sound effects and plays on words are what we love best.

Which character as performed by John R. Erickson was your favorite?

Drover is always my favorite, but the Vampire Cat herself is a close tie in this book.

Second Time is Even Better than the First

I never knew Henry Winkler ever wrote a book in his life until I heard him and Lin Oliver do a presentation at the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators conference last year. I bought the first one he wrote just so I could get him to sign it (and get a picture to make my wife jealous) and was really amazed at how good it is. My only issue with the new series, "Ghost Buddy," was that the second book wasn't available when I finished the first one. But now that the wait is over, I'm happy to report that "Mind if I Read Your Mind?" is even a better read than #1, "Zero to Hero." It's got a good message, it's well written, and it's funny. For instance, did you know that "the Hoove doesn't vacuum?" Oh no, he does not. Except when he does, that is. Both the hero and his ghost mentor and protector (who would rather be goofing off but is sort of stuck helping the kid) learn and grow as the story progresses. And, not to spoil it, but Hoover Porterhouse (the ghost) does in fact make some official progress in this volume. If you're a middle grader or if you just like kid lit, this is an excellent choice to spend a few bucks on. (I got the Kindle edition myself, but if you'd like it signed someday you'd better get the paper version, huh?)

2nd book as Great as the 1st. for boys (girls too) ages 7-12

Both 8yr old and myself loved the book. Not scary-Pretty funny a lot of the times. He is going back and reading again by himself this time. Great book to share-we took turns reading at bedtime to each other a few chapters as time allowed. we both can't wait for book 4 to be released.

My daughter LOVES these!

My 11 year old daughter loves this series and recommends to other girls near her age group. I love that this series keeps her reading beyond her usual 30 minutes of timed reading. She chooses these over watching Youtubers...double bonus!

Cute Vampire series for young girls

My 13 year old daughter cannot get enough of these books. I even had to search the internet to find some of the original books. This series is built upon a twin sister relationship where one is a vampire and the other is not. (SPOILER) Vampires in this series are born not created. One child was born vampire and the other was not. The world is built upon humans being unaware of vampires in the world. So the vampires have adapted to live secretly within Franklin Grove. The story is really cute because the series maintains the sister relationship despite one being a vampire.

I absolutely loved this book! it's my favorite of the series and I was super surprised when Charles Vega turned out to b their biological father. personally, I think that the author could've described him better b/c I imagined him as chubby and short, but then I read the part that said he looked like a pale Antonio banderas so I was utterly confused. other than that, the book was, as I said, vampalicious!!!

A good read.

With much of the action in the previous book this book is a race to catch to catch the antagonist. While there is no big battles they are intense scenes filled with action and danger. This book is a little slower than the others but still well worth the read. Flanagan continues to produce stories which you are not quite sure what happened the first time through. There is even a point in which he brings back a little bit of the fantasy feeling that was in the first book .

Good, but slower then the other books in the series

"Halt's Peril" is Book 9 in the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. I've read the previous 8 books and absolutely love this series. The characters are believable, the books are well written, and there are a lot of unexpected plot twists. While I enjoyed "Halt's Peril," it just wasn't as good as the previous books. The pace was just slower then the others. I won't ruin the plot, but this continues where Book 8 left off: Halt, Horace and Will are chasing Tennyson, the leader of the cult known as the "Outsiders." As the title suggests, something happens to Halt and the others must see to it that he is saved. A big part of this book involved camping and horse riding scenes. While still a good read, the action is less intense and it takes longer for things to develop. Overall I'd highly recommend the entire series to anyone, just don't expect this one to be as good as the others.

Fast moving but we'll detailed

I thoroughly enjoy John Flanagan. His work is fast paced and seems to sweep you along with Will, Halt, and Horace.

This series is excellent for those who love the middle ages, dungeons and dragons, and just people who like heroes who stand up to the bad guys instead of wimps who wonder why things are like they are and if they should get involved. These guys step up and make a difference.

These are some of the best adventure books I have ever read. The great thing is they could have been. Not futuristic so you know it is not possible rather very probable.

One of the best yet

I'm a loyal Ranger's Apprentice fan. I devoured books 1-4, then waited for book 5 to come out. Oh, that wait! I ravenously finished book 5. After book 6, the wait time between books started getting shorter and shorter, which made me love the series even more.

But enough of my love! Let's get to the point.

For those unfamiliar to the series, Will is a King's Ranger in the medieval Kingdom of Araluen. Halt's also a Ranger, but he was Will's mentor.
