    A Flash of Red
This book was a great surprise read. Reminds me of the reacher series in the way it flows. I look foward to more by this author.
    right wing conspiracy
This book could be improved with a different reader . . . but not by much. The reader seems to delight in emphasizing the smugness of the narrator, who's already too smug for words. I won't be listening to the rest of this: it's an assault on my patience to listen to such nonsense. The reader is unfamiliar with words like 'deprecating,' which he pronounces 'depreciating'; the author is unfamiliar with the concept, as there's nothing deprecating about the protagonist at all.
As far as 'right-wing' goes, the protag is a weird mix of reactionary family-values stalwart who nonetheless makes fun of Gingrich and homophobes. None of it is really believable, though, doesn't comprise a real character: he's more a mix of role-plays the author envisioned while scheming up assorted triggers for the malleable man to respond to in smug ways.
Imagine being trapped in a car with an Amway salesman. His car, where you're trapped by circumstances . . . and he's going to make you an Amway salesman by the end of the ride or kill you trying.
    Don't waste your time
I totally agree with Paul's review. Should have read that before purchasing this book. Won't be reading any more of his books.

More of a romance novel than an espinage thriller
Too much hugging and kissing, I have read many espianage thrillers and were captivated by the thrilling story lines, the excitment and danger but this book was more of ladies romance novel with a touch, a very small touch of thrills and espianage. It should be placed in the Romance Novel section
    not my "thing"
I was disappointed in this book! I was expecting more espionage, subterfuge...whatever. It was mostly about a romance between the main characters. Ugh. Just wanted them to get together or forget it. Didn't really care either way.
How do I delete this book
What would have made Flashpoint better?
It is so bad . I wish I could delete from my library
Would you ever listen to anything by Richard Aellen again?
    No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bill Weideman?
Would not help but part of problem
What character would you cut from Flashpoint?
    Not sure
    Any additional comments?
    No
    TWO Narrators - Disturbing
I'd like to start by saying I love Suzanne Brockmann's Troubleshooter Series. I know this book is a sort of beginning to the next phase of the "Troubleshooters". Ok - I understand stories need to evolve to keep them fresh and interesting.
My comments today are only about the narrator - make that TWO NARRATORS - not the story. I find them distracting, disturbing and not representing the characters in a manner in which they deserve.
I'd like to add - I'm only 2.5 hrs into this story and I felt compelled to make this review as I'm struggling to follow the story with the flipping back and forth of the narrators and the inconsistency of the portrayal of the characters.
They are reading the book verbatim, and barely pausing between points of view. I've had to rewind and listen again to follow.
I've checked out the next books in this series and see TWO NARRATORS again - SIGH!!!
This is NOT the desired way to listen to a story.
One narrator who can handle all the characters is most desired for me.
Least Favorite of the Series So Far
7th Book in the Troubleshooters Series, and my least favorite. I found myself zoning out throught the story. Kinda boring. And what's with the narrators?! Why would you have male and female readers, only to have them alternating chapters? That's just plain goofy and it's SO distracting. The male should read the male voices and the female read the female voices.

    Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
"My novel is meant to stand in the line of Fleming's own books, where the story is everything." said Faulks, "In his house in Jamaica, Ian Fleming used to write a thousand words in the morning, then go snorkelling, have a cocktail, lunch on the terrace, more diving, another thousand words in late afternoon, then more Martinis and glamorous women.
In my house in London, I followed this routine exactly, apart from the cocktails, the lunch and the snorkelling."Picking up from where Fleming left off in 1966 with The Living Daylights / Octopussy, Faulks has written the perfect continuation of the James Bond legacy.
Devil May Care is set during the Cold War and features all the glamour, thrills and excitement that one would expect from any adventure involving Bond... James Bond.

    "Old School" Bond is back
Being a long time Bond fan - I had quite high expectations.. I have listened to some of the original titles.. even tried Silverfin, from the Young Bond series to feed my appetite..
I am quite particular about the narration - so was pleased with Jeremy Northam's reading - it's crisp clear.. and sometimes a little... old school, especially when he does the foreign accents - put a smile on my face.. (He's the chap from that brill BBC series The Tudors and twisted sci-fi Cypher) - and he could even make a convincing Bond...
The author is definitely what some people would say "writing by numbers".. and so faithfully brings Bond back. If you were expecting something different then this may disappoint you.. if like me, you were looking for more of the old school.. then step right up. Brilliant..
To put this in perspective: I see this book more a Sean Connery's Bond.. classic cars.. tennis whites.. a little flawed.. the descriptions of these are wonderful..
    Bond is DEFINITELY back..
    This is not an evolution
James Bond. He is the icon of all the spies. Everybody knows the gadgets, the style and the womanizing charm. Author tried to continue in Fleming's novels and this try is successful. The thing is that there is nothing new. When you read this book you understand the approach of the moviemakers. Move Bond to 21st century is a clever way how to keep him alive. This book is a residue of ancient times. It is a visit of the Cold war but from today's perspective all the described Russian - British problems look a bit distant. If you look for a sequel of Fleming's work it is book for you. If you search for a modern spy thriller look another direction.
    Sebastian Faulks,shaken, not stirred!
Would you try another book from Sebastian Faulks and/or Jeremy Northam?
I have read all Sebastian Faulks' other works and love his writing. It was interesting to see his take on the Ian Fleming style.

Such a sick book you can't even deal with it
You gotta love this book I mean it's just so sick it's like James Bond doing really sick stuff and all that yeah
Great story, Narration puts me off
This like all he other young Bond books is a great interpretation of Ian Flemmings popular character in his youth. This book makes for great reading/listning and keeps you gripped. The narration however makes for hard listning and does have a touch of Microsoft Sam about it, sorry.
    I'm a big Bond fan
I have read all the Bond books by Fleming, Gardner, Amis and Benson. This series Young Bond is just as fantastic, clever and the making of 007. Strongly recommend reading these books if your a fan that has run out of Bond books to read.

Battling her old feelings, but fueled by his disloyalty both to her and to his country, Camille sets off into the shadows of the War on Terror to find him. Publishers Weekly)

    On Target
When I 1st read this book, I found the story line not plausible, but still entertaining. Since then, I've talked to friends in the Iraq war and kept better track of news reports. The fiction in this book has tracked recent events more closely than one might hope....
    Couldn't finish it
I didn't get far with this one. The narrator had such a nasal voice that I had to get it off my iPod. I have a lot of audible titles but this is one of the few that was a waste of a credit.
tried to persevere but couldn't get through it
I wasn't expecting much from this, just hoping that it would be engaging enough to keep me from resorting to the "zany" morning DJs on corporate FM radio. By the halfway point the ridiculous romance between the mercenary main characters, the ponderous dialogue, and the grating narrator almost made me switch over to 105.9 to suffer through Howie and Jennifer yapping about Britney, Atkins diets and other pop culture drivel.
Hillhouse's heroine, the daughter of some bad-ass Marine, is a paramilitary dynamo who, by the age of 30 has had a exemplary career in the CIA then gone on to create a wildly successful multi-million dollar private military company. Paradoxically she handles her personal relationships like a fickle junior high kid - one minute planning to kill the object of her affection and the next pining for the love they shared over extreme paint-ball duels.
The supporting cast are all cheap knock-offs of the usual "pros" that appear in these kind of books - all crack "operators" supremely physically fit, able to handle all forms of exotic weapons, fly helicopters at convenient moments, etc. Oh yeah, and every one of them wears Royal Robbins 511s and this is so important that we must be told dozens of times.
In between each chapter excerpts from news articles imply that over reliance on private military companies is rampant and dangerous. I made it from the halfway point of the book almost to the end (stopped listening during the dramatic final "op") thinking that maybe there was actually some cleverness here. Could it be Hillhouse intended to be critical of contractors in Iraq by telling us a story deliberately full of inane embarrassing characters gallivanting around Iraq armed to the teeth, killing suspected "tangos" with impunity, racking up huge expenses on the tax-payer dime all the while playing out a Danielle Steele romance? Nah, turns out its just not very good.
    NOT on target, horrible
This book is horrible. The narrator is bad but the story is worse.

Was Split Second worth the listening time?

DB's books are great. I have most of them on my library. Split second was the first Audiobook I purchased from Audible. The Unabridged books are fantastic and regrettably make the shortened hard to listen to as they have a tenancy to be disjointed don't flow well. However if you are new to DB it is a good place to start. King and Maxwell are great characters. Go for it

    potsdam bluff
Good story if you like World War II history. However the dialogue was so tortured with unlikely out of era phrases and the most improbable female interaction I have read out side of a dime store western that I almost turned it off it was so trite, which is saying a lot since I am too cheap to give up on any story I have paid for. That being said if you like this genre it is okay.
    Don't bother...
I can take liberties with history in the purpose of good fiction, and I can take a liberal amount of "just suspend your disbelief" when the book is good, but when one of the key characters acts in a manner that MAKES NO SENSE when you look back at it from the persepctive of the end of the book, I just feel cheated. You don't have to - skip this one.
