Travel this road at your own peril.

I don't know what the hell I just read! As a huge Hunter fan, i was just as hugely disappointed in the story. It seems like the publisher called for a book and the writter sat down at the keyboard and left his fingers do the walking. At times it appears the words ran off the edge of the paper and with nothing to reflect them back to the reader, you' re the loser. As an espinoge tome, the book tries to get too much into the story and GPS wouldn't keep you on course as you try to think why so and so did this while the other so and so was only a vehicle in the plot. No, The Second Saladin won't sit proudly on my book self as one of my favorite Hunter novels. That said, Hunter will always be one of my favorite authors and I'll continue to purchase his writings, hoping they're not another Second Saladin.

Early career milestone

It appears well researched, though I can't say for certain. Isn't that a hallmark of good literature, that it's believable? In that regard this is quite a well connected series of folds and convolutions. The protagonist character is hard to identify with, but since this received its copywrite 35 years ago, it seems Mr. Hunter has subsequently gotten that figured out.

Enoyable Adventure If You LIke Trickery And Adventure

Solid work by a well known author if you like military adventure from a time when he still cared about realistic plot unlike some of his later work.

Second Saladin

As an avid reader, I find authors I like and read all there books. Stephen Hunter was a "suggested author" by Amazon. I am through about half of his current books and have really liked or loved them all. Second Saladin was a bit different from the Bob Lee Swagger books, but just as good of read. I enjoyed the change of pace and subject matter. Great book!

Not typical Hunter

I've become very fond of his earlier books; military, American, shoot outs, the Western and southern states depicted richly. Great characters. This one didn't hit home for me having too many levels of corruption and politics to wheedle thru just to get a few action sequences that are more talked about after the fact rather than being immediate and involving the reader in the "I can't put this down" feel.

Unbearably tedious

I gave up on this book at about the 40% mark. Maybe I would have felt differently had I stuck with it to the end. But I just could not take any more of what seemed to be an endless, mind-numbingly tedious wind-up with no pitch in sight. After nearly half the book, we're still crawling slowly through the early training of a neophyte spy, with loads of useless information about AK47s and old Afghan battles. Nothing of interest happens, and the characters are neither distinctive nor appealing. Contrast this with Vince Flynn's brisk and gripping story of Mitch Rapp's early CIA training in American Assassin and you will see why I abandoned The Network. Though Simon Prebble is a competent narrator who can do a fine job with good material, he lacks George Guidall's talent for making even a bad book worth listening to.

Where Eagles Dare revisited

There is a good book in here somewhere waiting to come out, but it just didn't quite make it. While based on "real" events and characters, the plot is basically a straightforward update and geographic relocation of Alistar McLean's Where Eagles Dare [or The Guns of Navarone for that matter]. There's a touch of 007 and "Q" thrown in, and at times a little Tom Clancy-style filler material on equipment, techniques and S.O.P.'s...plenty of jargon for those needing to feed their acronym habit. The first person approach to the writing is interesting and a little different these days but at times this technique doesn't allow for full multiple character development. The extended foray into a love interest is painful and could have been left out, but hey I guess it mattered somehow. The sound quality is fine, although the narrator struggles mightily with female voices and his attempt at a female Texas drawl is excruciating. I can't really recommend the book, but then again it was interesting at times so maybe worth a credit.

A different kind of Stephen Hunter

Since I always like everything Hunter writes I may be an easy grader, but I really enjoyed this. Well, actually it started kind of slow, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. If you are a Bob Lee Swagger fan (I've read them all) you should be aware that this is a different kind Stephen Hunter.

This is essentially a spy story involving the international intrigues surrounding the Spanish Civil War. Unlike Bob Lee Swagger, our reluctant hero is an Everyman; drawn very much against his will into a world where no one is exactly who they seem to be and everyone is playing the game better than he is. Imagine John Le Carre meets â well â Stephen Hunter.

Does anyone know if this was ever a movie? For about the first five chapters, I had this vague sense of deja vu.

I like Stephen Hunter as a writer and at first this was a bit hard to follow since the time lines jump ahead without a seque, but if you stay with it, it is not a bad read. Would have preferred a bit more closure for the ending since invested a lot of time with the characters.

Complex and Confusing

The setting is the Spanish civil war in the 1930's--a complex event even many historians don't understand. On top of this complexity, the author weaves a confusing plot with multiple competing players and a confusing array of factions. If you speak Spanish and dabble in the history of the era, this book is for you ... and this reviewer is a huge fan of Mr. Hunter. It ends abruptly with much of the "behind the scenes" plot revealed in a few paragraphs, leaving this reader wondering how it all came together. This reviewer's prediction is this book will become a great movie some day.

One of Hunters earlier works- with an engaging plot and some twists; recommended if you like some of his Swagger books. Fast moving adventure.

Silesian Station

This is the second in the series and if anything it's even better than the first, but if you're new to this, then start with Zoo Station first. Downing's complex character, John Russell, a British journalist stuck in immediately pre-war Berlin because he has a 12 year old son there with his estranged German wife. War is about to break out and he's trying to help the underground resistance movement, save a young Jewish girl and survive the advancing maelstrom. Backed up with supporting historical background and superbly narrated this is highly recommended.

Paints a vivid portrait of pre-war Berlin.

"Silesian Station" is the second in the "Station" series and without giving anything away, follows immediately on from "Zoo Station" which you really need to read first. I was new to David Downing when I was recommended "Zoo Station", and was so taken with his well researched, detailed and vivid historical picture of pre-war Berlin, that I immediately read the second.

In both books, David Downing mixes real historical events so seamlessly into the narrative that you are drawn into the story, lives and fate of the characters. For me, it's like Le Carre at his best, and this book does not disappoint on any level. As for the narration, I could listen to Simon Prebble read forever and still not get bored. He is a perfect match to this book.

Superb follow up

Superb follow up to Zoo Station. Excellent story line, really well researched

locations and a great plot.

I really enjoy this type of novel, I look forward to the next David Downing novel.

Highly recommended

Ended too soon!

Having read the first one I was encouraged to read on. This was almost as enjoyable and interesting enough to continue the series. Could do with more tension!

Absorbing and atmospheric

I dont think you could really describe this book as a run of the mill thriller, though it has its moments. It is too low key for that. But it paints a frighteningly plausible picture of what it must have been like to live in Nazi Germany before the war, and how a decent man copes with the ambivalence and the compromises that have to be made to survive and protect friends and family.

Fast paced cat and mouse chase

A fast paced cat and mouse game from beginning to end as President Harris sends Nicholas on another investigative mission. One vivid sex scene, very limited profanity,some graphic violence . International intrigue, murder and violence of government and industry's agents to capture black gold( oil) in Africa. International thriller. I will read more of the author's books.

Good, but not his best.

Good, but I liked 3 other of his novels better (Day of Confession, Machiavelli Covenant, Cero Absoluto {spanish}. Like his other novels, it moves well from paragraph to paragraph. I also like his tiny bit of a surprise ending. But in this novel, there are fewer story elements. The events, plots, subplots, and characters seem fewer and less interesting. Too much time was spent racing around Portugal being chased by bad guys looking for secret photos. The main character, Marten (from other of his stories) seems to spend a lot of time discussing hypothetical situations with himself. Also, I think this is his first novel with foul language and sexy scenes. They add nothing to the story. I loved his other works, but this is fair. His expertise at making a fast-moving story is there and makes up for much of the shortcomings. His other novels blew me away; this one did not. He is still one of my favorite authors, but I felt something missing with this novel.

I loved this book

I loved this book. It kept you wondering what would happen next. They had several groups after them and if they weren't dealing with one group they had to deal with another. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers and look forward to finding another book by this author.

Disappointing

I really enjoyed the first four books in the series, so I was expecting much more. It was very dull.

Incredible, suspenseful read

What a complex story woven around something we already know hasn't happened! This is such a suspenseful book, full of totally incredible, but believable twists and turns, that I could hardly put it down. It's definitely Cuba through and through. Fascinating! I found myself rooting for the impossible--all the way to the (very satisfying) ending.

An anti-ideological political thriller

A secretive non-governmental organization called the Orchid has undertaken the Havana Project--an international conspiracy to remove Fidel Castro. Ex-CIA agent Carolina Aznar Perez, recruited seven years before, has been assigned to smuggle the weapon into Cuba. She is well-suited to the role. Not only is she a onetime spook; she is also the daughter of fugitives from Castro's island paradise. Her uncle Roberto Aznar, or "as he was known in émigré circles, the Grand One," is an anti-Castro leader of the "Miami Diaspora." Carolina has been raised on the belief that "[i]f what you did ultimately helped people--the Cuban people especially--then it had God's blessing."
