    Publisher's Summary:
An internationally acclaimed thriller of love, espionage, and subterfuge, in which Middle East meets West with dangerous consequences.
Years of training have transformed Michel Khoury into a skilled intelligence operative. A refugee whose family was murdered by extremists, he has one mission: the peaceful resolution of the Middle East conflict that upended his life.
An alluring enigma, he attracts the attention of Helen, a pretty English girl who lives in the adjacent apartment. As their relationship develops, Michel is unable to tell Helen about his past - or the collection of passports and unmarked bills he's concealed in the bathroom they share.
When Michel's secrets turn deadly, Helen and Michel find themselves pursued through the streets of London, Berlin, and the Scottish countryside, on the run from the very people they thought they could trust.
A critically celebrated novel that "recalls the cool detachment and compelling eye for ordinary detail that characterized the early thrillers of Graham Greene" (Independent on Sunday), Shake Off is that rare breed of riveting tale - of intrigue and suspense, love and betrayal - that announces a bold new voice for our increasingly global times.

    A Classic Spy Story
"Shake Off" (SO) is the second of Mischa Hiller's two novels. SO is about a young Palestinian man who was recruited some years ago by Abu Leila, following the murder of Michel's parents in a refugee camp. Abu has seen to Michel's training, both in spycraft and languages for which Michel has a natural talent. His training and early assignments lead him to Berlin, Moscow, and other capitals. Finally, he settles in a London bedsit awaiting his next assignment. He quickly meets the girl next door, a doll, to whom he is strongly attracted. He has been trained to limit his romances to no more than a week, but Helen is something else. And then there are assignments, and slip-ups, and the competition. Following a surprise assassination, Michele is on the run, and there is a betrayal - whom can he trust? Who is it that he really works for? An excellent novel, one of the better spy novels I have read in the last five years. I look forward to more from Hiller.
    Well written and informative
I started reading this book after trudging through two terrible books so maybe the contrast of competent writing in Shake Off made it seem epic but I really did enjoy it. I thought the main character was well developed and while his back story was meant to be somewhat mysterious, with fragments being revealed bit by bit, it became clear fairly early what had happened to him. The same goes for the plot twist at the end, it was fairly obvious well before the big reveal what was going to happen. For those less stunning pieces I took a star away from the review. Overall the writing was very good, the story well paced and I really did enjoy it. However the twists and turns were more or less predictable. Yet there is something really good in this book, the explanation of spy craft, the authentic feeling (not dramatized hollywood james bond) of an espionage agent in a foreign country was well done. I think this book is well worth a read and would recommend it.
One of the best spy stories out there
Misha Hiller has pulled off a very good spy story with excellent writing. While I suspected which way it was going, he still managed to make me doubt my analysis.

    Publisher's Summary:
A raid on a Pakistan Al-Qaeda cell recovers two laptops. When the computers' booby-traps are defused and the computers decrypted and translated, they indicate that Al-Qaeda has planned a series of simultaneous attacks in five U.S. cities involving potential dirty bombs, biological weapons and maybe even a nuclear weapon - on Election Day. Derek Stillwater, troubleshooter for the Department of Homeland Security, is assigned to a multi-jurisdictional Special Terrorism Activity Response Team (START) to locate the weapon and terrorists in Los Angeles and prevent the attack.
They have two days. But as they close in on their targets, Derek begins to think that the intelligence they gathered is a sideshow to distract them from the real target - one of the two candidates for President of the United States.

A really good and realistic terrorist thriller
The Valley of the Shadows is one of the best and most realistic page turning terrorist thrillers I have read this year with rapid fire action from start to finish. The scary part is that this terrorist scenario could so easily happen.
There are no fantasy scenarios or super heroes so common in other anti terrorism novels. The characters are realistic and believable. All of the major players on both sides have their flaws and make serious mistakes.
A raid on an Al Queda safe house in Pakistan discovers a plan for a series of simultaneous suicide bombings in major cities throughout the US. Dr. Derek Stillwater, an agent with homeland security, joins one of several teams of anti-terrorist specialists across the US who are assigned to make urgent needle in a haystack searches to find the explosives and stop the terrorists.
The team that Stillwater joins is a dsyfunctional mix of agents, most of whom have never worked together before. Stillwater is not a good team player and a really loose cannon who likes to work on his own. His team participation is even harder because he once had a personal relationship with the female agent assigned to head the team.
Stillwater's team soon discover that they have more than one plot to stop because the terrorist leader has his own agenda which could have a more serious impact on the US than the planned bombings. The chase turns into a roller coaster ride of action on a par to some of the earlier Vince Flynn and Tom Clancy thrillers - so sit back and enjoy the ride.
My only criticism was the extra line breaks at the end of each paragraph which left large gaps between paragraphs on my Kindle which made it harder to read. A small amount of editing could remedy this.
    Keeps up the tension
Review:The Valley of Shadows by Mark Terry
    4 STARS
This was a good thriller book. A little too much swearing is
the one thing I could have changed.
Intell from a raid on a terrorist cell where they came across a
computer that the bomb did not go off said they were
planning attack on voting day in 5 US cities.
A group of agents from FBI, Homeland security and
office of the Director of National Intelligence counterterrorism
will go to each of the 5 cities to try and stop it.
Derek Stillwater is not known as a team player. He is
assigned to LA. Derek has quite a rep. for getting things
done. people around him dying and breaking rules.
Derek gets into trouble from everyone it seems and
thats on the good guys side.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Merritt Fury, a fiercely independent American entrepreneur, returns to Hong Kong on business, little does he know that he has become enmeshed in a conspiracy to confiscate his investment and render the Crown colony a dependency on the Mainland dictatorship to the north. While he suspects foul play by some of his business partners in Bluelist TungstenTrading, he also learns that he is the object of scrutiny by an underground group combating the conspiracy. He meets Amber Lee, a Eurasian beauty and government economist - and also a pistol-packing spy. As Fury fights for his life and pieces together the paradoxical conflict, he grasps that he is the linchpin of the schemes of conspirators and plotters alike, and that it is precisely his independence that is the key factor in their plans.
This novel, the first of the Merritt Fury series, was completed in 1977, but only first published in 1992. It is up on Kindle and Nook as an ebook with the other two titles in the series, We Three Kings and Run From Judgment. What I forecast in 1977 about the fate of Hong Kong has come about. Mainland China is now governed by a fascist regime that has retained the trappings of Communism and is Communist in name only. It is certainly not "capitalist" as pundits like to claim.

A good read but missing some of what made the original great.
The second book in Ludlum's Bourne series is an entertaining read set in a very different setting from the first novel. This makes for some intriguing and interesting plot points as well as showing Bourne's considerable skills in another way. Again, Ludlum's writing and vivid descriptions make for a compelling and entertaining read.
BUT, without giving too much away, this novel is missing much of what made the original novel great. (Mild spoilers for both novels following) So much of the first novel dealt with Bourne's internal struggle to reconcile the sort of man he wanted to be with the mounting evidence of who he actually was. This struggle made the first novel a compelling read, as he dealt with this identity crisis. In the second novel, Bourne is forced, in a slightly contrived way, into becoming that man again. This means that the internal turmoil of the first novel, although hinted at, is largely missing from the second. Bourne forces the struggle out of his mind so that he can do what he needs to do. One is left wondering how many times he can be forced into being the assassin before that crisis ceases to be a plausible part of the story. This is a shame as that struggle made up so much of the magic of the first novel. Interestingly that struggle is largely missing from the movies.
Bourne Supremacy is an interesting enough read but I was left a little disappointed and unlikely to read the rest of the novels in the series. Unfortunately, without that inner crisis, Bourne's character is simply not as interesting or as exciting to read.
A powerful trip into the darker side of life...
Just like Ludlum once said in one of his novels, there was no a yellow skinned Chinese who could become a successful assassin in the western world, how come a white guy, not matter how good he was, i.e., no matter how good his make-up skills were, how he could survive in a 1-billion-yellow-skinned evironment, and even become a very active assassin? If this premise failed to establish well, then, this whole book was a totally absurd hypothesis, and of course, not worthy at all
    Slow and Boring
After being glued to The Bourne Identity, I thought surely Mr Ludlum would only get better. I was wrong. One of the most boring books I think I've ever read. Pushed myself to the halfway point in hopes that the story would pick up once the ball got rolling, but it never even budged. I was also dissapointed that Carlos the Jackal was nowhere to be found. Knowing, of course, that he makes a return in Ultimatum, I look forward to the Bourne/Carlos conclusion, and I hope that Ludlum delivers a similar feel to that of Identity.

    Publisher's Summary:
There are incidents and emergencies in the world that defy logical explanation, events that could be defined as supernatural, extraterrestrial, or simply otherworldly. Standard laws do not allow for such instances, nor are most officials or authorities trained to handle them. In recognition of these facts, one organization has been created that can. Assembled by a loose international coalition, their mission is to deal with these situations using diplomacy, guile, force, and strategy as necessary. They shield the rest of the world from their own actions, and clean up the messes left in their wake. They are our protection, our guide, our sword, and our voice, all rolled into one. They are O.C.L.T.
When a world-renowned scientist with a high-level security clearance goes missing in Uppsala, Sweden, and then a trained CIA operative follows suit, the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) taps Reed Christopher Hayes ("R. C." to his friends and "Crease" to his teammates) and the rest of his Military Intelligence unit to investigate. What they find lurking in the shadows of that quiet little city defies belief. The real question, though, is can they take it down before more lives are lost-including their own?
Brought to Light is the first piece in the exciting new O.C.L.T. series. Watch for more O.C L.T. stories coming soon, including The Parting (a full length novel by David Niall Wilson), Incursions (a full-length novel by Aaron Rosenberg), and "Let Sleeping Gods Lie" (a novella by David Niall Wilson). Great new series bursts to life
Brought to Light sees the beginnings of the exciting OCLT (Orphic Crisis Logistical Taskforce) series, detailing a loose group of experts who investigate and counter the stranger things in the world that most organisations wouldn't even know existed. With an array of top Writers contributing, this promises to be a new and thrilling series of stories.
This Novella introduces the character `RC' Reed Hayes, a clear-headed and dependable type who takes over the command of his US Army Military Intelligence squad after their first encounter with a mystery attacker goes badly wrong. Called in to look for first a missing Professor, and then the CIA Agent sent to find him, the Army squad soon find themselves up against an implacable assailant of the shadows, woven from ancient local legends, vicious and deadly. By pitting the remaining squad against the creature, the Writer draws out RC's leadership qualities and sharp instincts and sets up his transition into the OCLT group in the stories to come. Gripping and tense, Brought to Light is an exciting story that builds to a dramatic showdown.
If you like this one, check out the first full-length novel in the OCLT series, written by David Niall Wilson, The Parting, or his other currently released Novella, The Temple Of Camazotz.
