Sensational Series but Getting a Bit Predictable
The Anna Ferhbach series is one of the best written pre, during and post World War II era written novels out there. The initial books in the series were absolute masterpieces, bringing to the world one of the best female lead characters ever written. Problem though, in previous books we've been through the war, Anna has learnt all about what she can endure and sharpened her skills to kill at will. So by the time the series has reached Angel Rising, there's really nothing new to learn about Anna. Plus we know from the old lady interviews at the start of each novel that she obviously doesn't die. Therefore it's pretty predictable what will happen when she is sent to Brazil by the CIA to track down a Nazi war criminal who has fled there. Likewise retrieval the gold shipment (from a previous novel) that makes up the second percentage of pages, nothing surprising happens here. The only surprises are that we learn a bit more about her sister and one or two characters from previous books get their well deserved comeuppance. And of course Anna's tally of kills continues to rise but disturbingly for character development, this no longer just revolves around those who are out to do her harm but also includes everyday Russian soldiers who are in the way of her pay day.
Fans of the series will want to check out Angel Rising but if you've been recommended to check out books with this sensational character, start at the beginningAngel from Hellas information on previous books is given away in subsequent ones.

    Good Book
This book is the last in the Anna Fehrbach series by Christopher Nicole, all of which chronicle, over a thirteen-year (roughly 1939-1952) period, the history of a female assassin first trained by the Nazis and then employed by, at various times, the British and the Americans. The novels all employ the same gimmick: each begins with the author, in the present day, visiting the now-aged Fehrbach and hearing her recount her adventures, for him to write up.
Christopher Nicole is an old hand at writing about professional governmental assassins; from 1966 to 1975 (under the name Andrew York) he wrote the Jonas Wilde series, the first of which (The Eliminator) I encountered as a teenager and absolutely loved. These novels were brilliantly written and hold up quite well today; they remain, I think, the gold standard of "government assassin" series. I still own the ones I purchased back then (all except for one called The Dominator, which seems not to have been published in the US) and I don't think any other series, except perhaps the Matt Helm novels of Donald Hamilton, rival them. When I discovered that Nicole/York was still writing spy novels, I of course had to try them out. The Anna Fehrbach series in general, and this book in particular, is quite good, but does not quite rise to the level of the Jonas Wilde books.
The Fehrbach books have certain similarities with the Wilde ones. Fehrbach and Wilde are each described as the best assassin in the world (no contradiction, since they operated in different time periods) and each is assigned hits by their respective employers on a piecemeal basis; when not actively engaged on a job, each lives quietly-- Wilde on a houseboat, Fehrbach on a private island in the Bahamas. (In this novel, she has been married for about three years to a British agent.) Wilde's weapon of choice is his deadly right hand and a certain specific killing blow; Fehrbach is proficient with guns and knives but is also deadly with only her hands. The similarity goes a bit further-- in the last twenty percent or so of this book, Anna Fehrbach finds herself in a situation quite similar to one that Wilde found himself in at the end of The Deviator, but to avoid spoilers I won't describe that description.
As I said, this book begins in the early 1950s with World War II over and Anna living on a private island with her husband. Her parents, some servants, and a pair of very fierce dogs also live on the island paradise with them. She is contemplating retirement from the business, once and for all (another similarity with Wilde) when she is approached by her American handlers to complete one last assignment, complicated by the fact that it is in Britain. She used to be employed the British (part of the history chronicled through all the novels) and is now, as part of her parting deal with them, prohibited from being in that country.

    WW II Kitsch
Would you try another book from Christopher Nicole and/or Jilly Bond?
Maybe. The characters are very superficial, more caricatures than anything else. The German characters are just ludicrous - it's a kind weird historical soap opera.

    Much better than average.
Would you consider the audio edition of A Spy in the Shadows to be better than the print version?
    Yes...Narrator brought it to life.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Many twists and turns...usually I can figure out the "bad guy." Not this time.
Which character as performed by James Killavey was your favorite?
All of them. Did a great job with a very large group of characters..and accents.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end that...wasn't really the end...can't give anymore away.
    Any additional comments?
Excellent story and very well read.
    Average at Best
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone on a long boring drive
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really. The story has been told a bit better, but this book played the characters out until I lost interest. I never engaged with the story's main characters. The end did have a nice little twist, but it petered out by the end.
What didnt you like about James Killaveys performance?
At times (many), it was like being narrated to by the robot from "Lost in Space"
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Not much
