Publisher's Summary:
In this fifth adventure of Cyrus Skeen, private detective and socialite in San Francisco, it is January 1930, the end of the Roaring Twenties and the beginning of the "Red Decade" when Soviet spies and Communist fellow travelers have begun to infiltrate the government and other institutions in large numbers.
During a Nob Hill society party, Skeen and his painter wife, Dilys, befriend a beautiful sculptress who turns out to be a British spy carrying important information about the extent of that infiltration in American and British governments.
In A Crimson Overture, one thing leads to another, and soon Skeen is enmeshed in a conspiracy to silence him and anyone else with knowledge of the scale of espionage and treason in both countries.
In the previous Skeen case, The Chameleon, the intrepid and cosmopolitan detective uncovers and dissolves a Nazi Bund in a university town near San Francisco, while in The Daed'lus Conspiracy, he journeys north to a Redwood Forest to foil the assassination of a U.S. Senator.
In this latest exploit, Skeen tangles with J. Edgar Hoover's Bureau of Investigation, irascible police detectives and newspapermen, and ruthless Soviet agents hurrying to cover up their depredations before the British spy's secrets are revealed to the authorities.

Cyrus Skeen vs. the "wielders of whips"
The ominous reality behind will become known as the "Red Decade" is chillingly portrayed in "A Crimson Overture". It is 1930 and a pall has descended on San Francisco with the fall of the stock market. Cyrus Skeen has wisely avoided the investment quicksands that sucked in so many others. But after he and his artist wife Dilys befriend a mysterious Englishwoman at a lavish party, a broken appointment and the bequest of a baggage room claim check draw Skeen ever deeper into a world of espionage, betrayal and murder. The Nazis are not the only gang of "wreckers, destroyers, and wielders of whips" threatening the world. The new Soviet masters of old Russia are bent on taking advantage of the growing popularity of socialism in the West. They are Skeen's natural enemies, and he will use all his considerable resourcefulness to halt the deadly "progress" of their plans. As always, it is a pleasure watching him work!
Slow Going
1930s a vague background for this book. Unable to relate to the characters. For a short book, it dragged toward the ending.
Explosive
Set in the 20s "A Crimson Overture" has a fascinating plot that is relevant today. Cyrus Skeen is the kind of hero one longs for.
Skeen's saga is solid gold
A Crimson Overture is the latest in a series about the all-American Cyrus Skeen, my new detective hero. Skeen is smart, cultured, honest, brave, confident, handsome, and individualistic (which together, in my eyes, equals sexy). In this novel, Fiona Moncrieff Nesbitt, a beautiful intriguing woman falls in love with Skeen, drawing the detective into the world of espionage. And so continues the saga of Cyrus Skeen. "A Crimson Overture" promises to be as brilliant as the first novel in the series. For any fan of detective novels or history, Edward Cline is the one to follow.
