A satisfactory ending to a good trilogy

Where does Voice of the Gods rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Not as impressive as JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire but better than The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flammel and Trudi Canavan's Black Magician's trilogy and other books set in that fantasy world. Worse than Sherlock Holmes, better that James Bond, equal with the Vorkosigan saga.

What other book might you compare Voice of the Gods to and why?

Trudi Canavan's black Magician trilogy's "The High Lord" as it also concludes as series, includes a "forbidden" love affair and leave the "fantasy universe" in which it plays out completely changed, but I think this book is a bit better.

Which character as performed by Sarah Douglas was your favorite?

The veeze Mischief.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really, but it was easy enough to follow and at places it drew me in.

Any additional comments?

I thought the way the game pieces in this game of chess turned on those moving them was an excellent idea.

Age of the 5 book 3

Where does Voice of the Gods rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Quite high

What other book might you compare Voice of the Gods to, and why?

Dragonlance, there is enough complexity to the storylines

What about Sarah Douglass performance did you like?

Easy to listen to

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I couldn't, it's too long for that

Any additional comments?

Fab series, loved it

excellent finale

Loved it an exciting finale to an excellent trilogy. Trudi Canavan at her best.

Brilliant

great story. i wish there was a prequel and sequel. The coming together of the immortals to unite in this book was my favorite part.

A good riveting read for all ages

Young adult fantasy it may be, but it has series-worthy appeal for all of us. The otherness of the civilization is hardly insurmountable, and the beings are as people. The rest of the perceptions and struggles are all too familiar. How the outcast feels and reacts to the blows life gives him are all too real. The swordwork is fairly classic, and the high mountain snow issues are familiar. Another review mentioned that there seemed to be more episodes of unconsciousness than one is accustomed to. Not if one has been an ER nurse or the mother of boys. I did not yet view the visual copy, but the audio book had me riveted, followed by gnashing of teeth that the remainder of the series is not yet recorded.

And I certainly hope that the author will tag Chekejian for the rest of the series as his performance truly enhances the characterizations as well as the narratives.

I bought the Whispersync set cheap, probably through Book Gorilla or Book Bub.

Title: The Outcasts

Subtitle: The Brotherband Chronicles, Book 1

Author: John Flanagan

Narrator: John Keating

Format: Unabridged

Length: 12 hrs and 18 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-23-12

Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 31 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic

Publisher's Summary:

In Skandia, there is only one way to become a warrior. Boys are chosen for teams called brotherbands and must endure three months of gruelling training in seamanship, weapons and battle tactics. It's brotherband against brotherband, fighting it out in a series of challenges. There can be only one winner. When Hal Mikkelson finds himself the unwilling leader of a brotherband made up of outcasts, he must step up to the challenge. The Heron brotherband might not have the strength and numbers of the other two teams, but with inventiveness, ingenuity and courage on their side, they might just surprise everyone.

Critic Reviews:

"Having sold millions of his Ranger's Apprentice books all over the world, John Flanagan now has a new series on offer and it is just as swashbuckling and adventurous as his last. Brotherband is set in Skandia - a cold, Viking-inspired country that many of his Rangers' fans know well, but this time with new characters who are just as intriguing." (Deborah Abela, ABC Radio Canberra Drive Show with Louise Maher)

"Ranger fans will lap up this series. There are similarities between Will and Halt relationship and Hals connection with his mentor Thorn. No one does adventure like Flanagan, the non-stop action and tension of Brotherband will leave readers wanting more." (

Members Reviews:

Could've used a younger narraror

I've read this book physically and decided to listen to it now, the narrator could've been Hal's age and then set a deeper tone for the older characters rather than the other way around but overall not a bad listen, definently recommend especially if you like the rangers series.

An excellent adventure

Hal and his Heron Brotherband are trainee Skandian warriors, together they learn to work as a team to win the right to be the honour guard for the Andomal, a precious treasure that is venerated by the Skandians. It is an excellent adventure story for young readers. John Keating gives a pretty good performance of the book. John Flanagan is the author of the highly popular series Ranger's Apprentice. The Brotherband Chronicles is the follow on series focusing mostly on Skandians and not Araluen as in Ranger' s Apprentice.

first book in brotherband saga is amazing

john flanagan maintains a funny and exciting journey in the mediaval world full of rangers and misting creatures.

How to train a dragon minus the dragon

What made the experience of listening to The Outcasts the most enjoyable?

This story is a feel good adventure for the underdog. You really come to like the characters and although ultimately predictable, it's a great tale.

What did you like best about this story?

As a mum, I liked the lessons the boys learn along the way and the way they solve each problem that arises. I also liked the frequent humor that peppers the story.

What about John Keatings performance did you like?

While some of the accents are a bit questionable, John maintains the characters consistently.

Title: The Eyes of the Dragon

Author: Stephen King

Narrator: Bronson Pinchot

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 22 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-19-12

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 17 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic

Publisher's Summary:

Everyone in the kingdom talked about the King-in-waiting, Roland's elder son, Peter. And one man thought and planned and brooded on something else: how to make sure that Roland's younger son, Thomas, should be crowned King instead. The King is dead, murdered by an unusual poison. While evidence is gathered, and the land of Delain mourns, Flagg, the King's magician, unscrupulous, greedy and powerful, plots.

Soon the King's elder son, Peter, is imprisoned in the needle, the top of a high tower, for his father's murder. And Thomas inherits the throne. Only Peter knows the truth of his innocence, and the true evil that is Flagg. Only Peter can save Delain from the horror the magician has in store. He has a plan, but it is rife with danger. And if he fails, he won't get a second chance.

A captivating tale of heroic adventure, of dragons and princes, of mysterious mice and men from the pen of the master storyteller.

A Kingdom some opera story

the narrator voice is usually quite flat, spatial boring. Also lots of the voiced sound the same.

A fairy tale for grown-ups.

Brilliant.... The best audio book I have listened to. I actually read The Eyes of the Dragon years ago when it was first published and though my memory of the story had faded over time I nevertheless remembered it as being a compelling story. So, seeing it appear on Audible, I decided to give it another "read". Bronson Pinchot's narration is one of the best I've heard. He reads with a theatrical ability that adds depth to the characters and atmosphere to this dark tale of injustice and wizardry, all but turning it into a dramatisation. I shall be keeping my eye out for books specifically narrated by Bronson Pinchot from now on.

King's story-telling is legendary, as anyone who has read The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Tower, The Stand, to name but a few, will tell you. Though this is a break away from King's usual subject matter and more of a fantasy (think Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin) he manages to spin a yarn as believable as Shawshank. Not just for fans of Stephen King, but anyone who enjoys fantasy tales with a mix of tension and suspense. Utter brilliance all round. Get it.

what a story !

one of my absolute favourite books enjoyed it from start to finish read the book 5,6,7 times and I am going to listen to this again and again in narrative is fantastic and makes you feel like you're part of the characters highly recommend

I loved this narrator

I really loved this book... the story kept me gripped until the end. To begin with I thought the narrator was really boring with a monotonous voice ... until I jumped out of my skin when he changed in to the voice of Flagg or one of the parrots. Amazing

A great read to delight all

This is my desert island book, to reread time and time again. Great plot, characters to love and hate, a cute dog and set before modern times. The narrator seems to understand the reader, the writer and the players alike.

Run and Buy!

I don't usually enjoy fantasy, but this is very well done. Witty and realistic. I think it's true to the realworld era it's drawn from.

BTW, I've enjoyed all of Mr. Grimwoods books.

Vampires?

I liked the Venice setting and the characters were well thought out.Have finished the series now and would read more about the main character if they be forthcoming.

Grimwood rocks!

I had not heard of this author before reading this series. I was enthralled by the concept and the characterization. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

Read it slowly

Great book. Only 4 starts because it reads too quickly. I really hope JCG continues to use these characters. I read it in two days.

Five Stars

A good read

Great series

Just getting back into this series and hope that the narrator is in the others as well.
