Part one of two

This story ends on a cliff, with the plot wrapping up in Siege of Macindaw. An entertaining, adventurous, and heartwarming two-book tale of treachery versus loyalty, science versus superstition. One obvious moral here is that popular chaps aren't always trustworthy.

I like this narrator (Zappa) better than Keating, because he reads with a natural cadence and rhythm. I find that Keating pauses in places that are best for him to draw a breath, but not necessarily best for me to follow the drift (even though I like his voice and he reads fluently).

I don't like the musical intrusions at each chapter break. Obnoxious! If not for that, a 5-star narration. Zappa gets 5, but the recording studio gets 3.

Do you pick book #1 or book #2 for The Sorcerer in the North?

You gotta love the never ending action, the deviousness of the enemy, the humor in the banter and teasing between fighting comrades, the refreshing way the plot uncurls (something hard to do today with the number of proven authors and the deluge of new authors) and the skill of new to us, narrator Zappa. No, I didn't go for door #1 with the advice of two readers reviews on the 2 identical books but different readers. Thanks! It was the winning choice: Frank Zappa. He did an exceptional job and made the transition seamlessly in narrators. Having said this, I will be making a difficult choice in the next book which is a "two-er" again because I really like both narrators. Can we have a hint? Does our choice influence which one stays? Do we have to be between 15 and 22 to vote since as of book 4, this series has become YA and author Flanagan "one of the most influential youth authors" created. This listener is 70 and likes the series very much! Does this mean I'm going thru my second childhood? Spend a credit whatever your age and find out how good The Sorcerer in the North is!

Love this series! The kids and I are listening to them in the car on the school run. Just straight adventure with well developed, likable characters.

Just as good as the first book. Definitely aimed at the "young adult" market but enjoyed it nonetheless.

It was good, but.......

What made the experience of listening to Oakleaf Bearers the most enjoyable?

I have enjoyed this series immensely and took this book almost as a reflex action. I enjoyed the story, but found it a bit too drawn out. As usual the action got me in, to listen to each bow shot and clang of armor was fun and entertaining. William Zappa did his usual best when reading this tale. I shall look forward to the next book, despite my slight disappointment in this one. it is still a good read.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the continuing story of Will and Holt, of their adventures in other lands as well as their own. Although just a bit labored the story does jog along fairly well, and with Horace as a sidekick as well as princess Cassandra, plus the Skandians kept it going.

What about William Zappas performance did you like?

William Zappa is a really good choice to narrate this tale, he can change the accents and not forget who is speaking, all in all it is a good job done.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Bold and exciting in the old fashion way.

Any additional comments?

The story could have either been a little shorter, or something added to fill in the spaces of music between chapters. I find that in this book, the music after the chapter is announced a bit off putting, I was never sure if I was beginning or ending a chapter, but otherwise no other comments.

Great Series

The series ended as great as it started. I was locked in from the start of Book 1 to the end of Book 3. While Book 3 of Game of Thrones may be the best fantasy book on a stand alone basis, this is the best fantasy trilogy I have yet to come across. Highly recomended for anyone who loves the darkness of fantasy series.

The Great Characters, amazing writing by David Anthony Durham, Cliff hanger after Cliff hanger. Story is original. Political, intrigue, Sorcery, betrayal, and Romance! It is right up there withe A Song of Ice and Fire, Book of Malazan,a nd the kingKiller Chronnicles; better than the latter two and on equal part with George RR Martins book. In fact this book is a George RR Recommendation on his must reads! I'm glad He was write, I am now buy everything David Anthony Durham Writes.

dick hill is an amazing reader, has such a a powerful versatile voice. He is the golden voice of Audio, along with Roy Dotrice, very powerful, and a voice for every character. A must Listen!!!

What was most disappointing about Jon Courtenay Grimwoods story?

They didn't build any character for me to be interested in. The story jumped around soo much it was hard to follow and after slogging through hour after hour hoping it would get better I cut my loses and quit.

Magical Venice

Our own history is so full of mystery and intrigue that a good author has really no need to create his own fictional world in order to create a truly great novel. Travel back in time to Venezia the city of a thousand bridges and channels and there really is no need to create the lost elven city of Lothlorien. Add a dash of magic, a dash mystery and include some good old human cruelty and you have the recipe for what could be a great novel right?

Well yes. But even if Venezia surely is the perfect setting for assassins, nobility and political drama and I can hardly imagine a more ???magical??? city this novel still comes off as bland. The characters are, if not mostly one dimensional, all unlikable. This novel sadly falls into that broad category of historical fiction where the author has been so focused on creating a story in a true historical setting that the story part has somehow gotten in second line to what I assume is correct Renaissance architecture and sculptures. A shame really.

well paced fun

Great novel, part of a good series. Nice to have vampires and werewolves that aren't twilight style, without being nosferatu style either.

Could be a good series

On the whole I love the work of Jon Courtenay Grimwood although some are much better than others. This one is by and large good but with some elements of confused logic. The "hero" is capable of grade A violence but puts up with regular capture and torture. There is also much confusion as to the why's and wherefores of his love interest(s). However the story is otherwise very good, not so the narration. Dan Miller cannot and should not ever do female voices as he comes over as comic camp with a squeaky petulant tone.

Terrible

Narrative is monotonous and no personality. I was so confused by the end of the first chapter, 'the winged ones' (the kids? the dragons?) The coolest part of this book and we are blindfolded by a stone grandmother whom died in and explosion that did the town no harm?? Are the dragons evil? If so why js the protagonist so in aw of them?

Fantastic!!

Due to my chronic laziness I rarely write reviews, even though I do value customer reviews when browsing. This audio book is exceptional. The plot, content narration and style had me hooked within five minutes. One of those rare finds where I am in no rush to find out what happens in the end, as I am enjoying the evolution of the circumstances our main character Will finds himself in so much. Also, Swanwick very cleverly has the listener constantly modifying his/hers mental picture of the world but in small ways, so we don't feel anything is being directly explained. A risk-free purchase - guaranteed.

Well worth 12 hours of your life

This book took a little getting into but is worth the effort. A curious mix of fairy tale, little bit of sci-fi and some modern tech. An old story told with a good fresh twist, and the narration was very good too.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Sorry - didn't finish it. I got halfway thru it, but I kept finding myself thinking of other things while I was attempting to listen. Since it couldn't ever keep my attention, I stopped listening.

How could the performance have been better?

Didn't like the narrator. I even heard him say, "damn" under his breath when he mispronounced a character's name. While that held some comic relief for me, it also irritated me. Plus I didn't like his voice too much. Kind of a wussy voice... if that makes sense.

Could you see The Blood Knight being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Nope.

Just that I wouldn't recommend this book. I got too bored... wishing things would escalate some more. I didn't even want to finish the book - and haven't been bothered that I never did.
