A Fulfilling Conclusion

I apologize for presuming to tell you what to do with your life, BUT don't read this Troy series book first! Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. So if you do happen to read first the first book in the series, Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow, and assuming that you liked it; then it goes almost without saying (but, of course, I am saying) that you will naturally read all the way through the final installment in the Troy series. But was it worth it? Yes. How is this particular book compared to the first two? It is a four-star (compared to a five-star read for book 1 and a 4.5-star read for book 2) read that you just have to make. We all know that Troy is doomed. We all anticipate that some of our much-beloved characters will no doubt take their last heroic breaths upon those crisp white pages. We've all read the 15,693 lines of the Iliad. We all saw the Brad Pitt movie. So while reading this book we all know that there will be no surprises, right. Or will there? I loved the wickedly clever reimagining of the Troy story. Just how did the Trojan Horse get into Troy? - Classic! Keep in mind that the author died while composing this book. His wife picked up his shield & quill and fought the good fight in his place while she was still mourning for her husband. If this story gets a little weepy near the end, I suppose that this book was part eulogy for Gemmell by his wife. Hey, I almost shed half a tear during one or two of the passages. I did wait quite a while between reading the first and the last book; I had to "psyche" myself up for it.

Walking the beam between 3 and 4 stars

Long ago I'd read the first two in the series and was eager for this one to come out except Mr. Gemmell went and died and put this one on hold. Many years later I'm going through a Bronze Age interest and decide to revisit Mr. Gemmell's work. After reading books 1 & 2 I decided to see how 3 is. Honestly a little underwhelming after the first two. While Mrs. Gemmell did an admirable job cleaning this up for publishing it, the story becomes a little contrived to make events fit a timeline (Moses vs. Troy vs. Thera) and the bend/warping of the Iliad. Having said that I do give cudoes to the story line for best characters with the best moment being the duel between Achilles and Hector. I feel I'm robbing it with a 3 star rating vs. 4 but defend it because this is a step down from the earlier stories and while it's very readable, the love isn't there.

Amazing conclusion

i love all of Gemmell's books and have been for a few years now ordering them via the UK to get them that much sooner.

Okay but nothing else

Book I of this series started off slow but really picked up speed as it reached its conclusion, so I started this book really excited to see where Gemmell was going with this tale. Unfortunately, Shield of Thunder really failed to deliver.

As soon as you begin this book, you notice that Gemmell has skipped forward in time. No big deal really except for one important fact: a tragic event has occurred, which has left our main character, Helikaon, dead or dying. I suppose the author might have done this to build suspense or tension, but it did not work and leaves you more annoyed than anything. So with our former main character in limbo, we are introduced to a brand new character and two, minor characters from book one. Admittedly, Piria has a history with our main heroine, Andromache, but Kalliades and Banokles are now stars of the show.

I will give credit to Gemmell: he makes these three characters interesting by throwing them together in tragic fashion then revealing their backstory. Unfortunately, the sea voyage to Troy with Odysseus(IF it sounds like deja vu after reading Book I I understand completely) just feels like filler material, and the hopeless love of Kalliades for Piria really doesn't ring true. In fact, if not for the story of Andromache in Troy itself, the book would have floundered right here, but once again Troy comes to the rescue. The tale of Hektor and Andromache's wedding games with Agamemnon and Priam scheming against one another keeps you turning the pages, and our old hero, Helikaon, returns. When the games are over and the Trojan War is about to begin, I was again anticipating great things. I was even looking forward to the end of Piria, Banokles and Kalliades quest to find Andromache.

Alas, Gemmell had just teased me.

First, the epic quest to reunite the two lovers -Andromache and Piria - just . . . fizzles out. I won't explain how, but Piria and Andromache's story just ends. No other way to say it. Boom it is gone, and you sit there and ask yourself why Gemmell spent all this time building this up to just end it so suddenly.

Second, Gemmell skips forward in time again. No buildup in the Trojan War; it is just on going. We hear about all these huge battles that have taken place. Characters talk about Hektor's victories and Odysseus' strategic brilliance, but what we get to actually read about is Kalliades and Banokles struggles. And, while I did like both characters, Kalliades dealing with his inability to love anyone isn't really why I read a book about the Trojan War. Oh, Helikaon, Andromache, Priam and the rest make brief appearances but not enough to really matter.

Third, Gemmell has this annoying habit of giving you a character, feeding you a backstory then never returning to him.

The Scottish Play, Part Deux

I stumbled upon this while looking for books based on Norse mythology (the sequel is calledThe Spawn of Loki (The Macduff Saga, Vol 2)). I was delighted to find that it was a continuation/reimagining of my favorite Shakespeare play, Macbeth. Macbeth was slain by the man of no woman born, Macduff, the Thane of Fife. But his story did not end there. Another mad King now threatens Scotland, and Macduff must convince his people to ally themselves with Elves, witches and Fae folk to secure victory once again.

The author does an excellent job of capturing the flavor and tone of Shakespeare without actually using Elizabethan English. Since Macbeth has a supernatural element, and Scotland is rich in folklore, the Erl-King story flows naturally from the end of the play. Macduffâs characterization is spot on and itâs easy to imagine that the Weird Sisters would appear to him. The plot is fairly straightforward â gather an army to counter the Erl-Kingâs army of dark elves. Within that simple plot, there is solid character development for Macduff, and also the witches. I enjoyed their interactions, and the descriptions of the environment. There is a tiny bit of Norse mythology hinted at when Macduff visits a Viking stronghold for aid, but the story remains firmly rooted in Scotland.

Overall, I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading the sequel. Macduff is a great character to build a series around, and I expect the stories can become more complex now that his character has been established. Highly recommended to fans of Macbeth, or folklore based fantasy.

Incredibly the story marches through astounding twists and turns, dragging the reader through incredible and harrowing events ...as each page turns the reader is pulled deeper into the story and not wanting to leave he is compelled to keep reading.Finally reaching the end of the book he realizes that in order to reach a satisfying end he must continue to the ends of the chronicle! I await breathlessly the next book, and the next book and so on to the Grand Finale!

Her decision making is just painful to read

It is poorly written as it just goes from one life threatening event to the next. The author has no clue for details such as logistics, battles, warfare, one on one fighting and world building. One moment the main character is a killing machine and the next she has no clue what to do. Her decision making is just painful to read. She has trained for years, but is a clueless until the last second. Now I know this is a fantasy land, but at least have animals act like animals. If a predator catches something it is not going to continue chasing something else it will protect its kill and eat. Sorry not worth the time nor money to read.

Don't these people ever eat?

Action packed page turner, but I like characters who have real lives that rise up to greater things. There are too many threads going on at once. If you're going to string us along to buy more books make it a little less obvious.They don't eat,sleep or curry their animals.good story though.

Great dragon story

Great story an now has me hooked on the series. Love the way author switches from character to character. Of course.she leaves them right at the life or death moment. Can't wait to get the next ones. Suggested audience was young adult but I found it to be a quick entertaining read. Total fantasy.

Disappointing

The editing of this book is atrocious, if done at all. Spelling, grammar, doubled words and phrases all make it difficult to emerse yourself into the story. It also gets so monotonous and predictable that you find yourself wanting it to come to an end. Good storyline but author needs to go back and reread what she wrote.

Surpasses the original book in the series...

Very few second books in a fantasy series manage to live up to the promise of the first book. This one takes the already-interesting world of "Sing the Four Quarters" and vastly improves on it. It's not really a direct sequel in that the main focus of the book is not on the same characters, and even that in itself was a great choice. Huff has a talent for writing deeply flawed characters that are still very interesting and sympathetic, and this book is probably the best example of that. The characters are fascinating, the plot is suspenseful, and the mythology of the world (one of the most interesting aspects of the first book) is greatly expanded on. This book and the third installment, "No Quarter," are definitely two of the best and most original examples of the multi-volume fantasy genre.

Brother & Sister Assassins versus the Grim Reaper

A 'noir' fantasy. "Fifth Quarter" reminded me of one of those old German woodcuts of the Grim Reaper stalking through a medieval village, bishops, commoners, and knights falling dead in his path. The grim reaper in this tale is a pathetic old man with a Song that can seal the souls of the dead back inside their decaying bodies.

Tanya Huff sets "Fifth Quarter" in the same world as "Sing the Four Quarters". There are Bards who can Sing to the 'kigh', the elemental spirits of earth, air, fire, and water. The Empire and its armies are major elements in the plot. However, "Fifth Quarter" is not a continuation of the earlier book. It is the story of brother and sister assassins, who end up inhabiting the same body (the sister's) when they attempt to kill a man who has discovered the secret of eternal life. How the brother gets his body back is one of the book's dominant plot lines, along with the hunt for the grim reaper, who has abducted the Emperor's son.

I didn't enjoy "Fifth Quarter" as much as Huff's earlier book. It dwells too much on incest and decaying bodies. However, it is a strong, well-plotted novel with likeable, interesting characters (the only exception is the narcissistic brother-assassin). Huff does her usual good job with the minor characters, too.

A smashingly good end to a wild ride of a trilogy!

Fran Wilde's HORIZON is a perfectly fitted ending to an uplifting trilogy, even though it doesn't feel like the end. The writing is happily invisible, leaving the reader thoroughly immersed in the break-neck story and the Tolkien-sized universe Wilde teases us with.

Narratively HORIZON ties up all the major loose ends for our heroes, leaving me satisfied with their respective fates, even though one character's final chapter had me in tears at 3AM.

There are enough adroit plot twists and turns of loyalty or motive that I often felt buffeted with surprise, but never to the point where I felt lost in the clouds as things fell into place.

It's hard to review a stunning trilogy ending work of this intricate magnitudeâeither you're here with me on the journey's last leg or you're a new reader, and you owe it to yourself to start with UPDRAFT, to discover the secrets of the amazing Bone Universe just as I and many others did. If the latter is the case, welcome to the grand adventure!

Technical things:

The pacing was perfect. It was a literal page-turner for me, to the point I finished at 4AM, after reading all night long.

I really really want an illustration filled companion book. Or a graphic novel. Or an HBO series. This world is so artfully created the beauty of it begs to be rendered visually.

I need more books set in this universe.

Fran Wilde's epic tale begs for more volumes to explore everything hinted at in this third book.

If you haven't guessed it I heartily recommend you buy this book and finish this amazing trilogy. Because wow good fiction this artful and unique is too rare to pass up.

Fran Wilde sticks the landing in the conclusion to her first trilogy.

I still remember the haunting images of at the end of CLOUDBOUND, and that vision informs this entire book. The action has shifted from the towers to the clouds, and then to the ground. The characters, real and fully realized, wrestle with the abrupt wrenching of their worldviews. The foundation of their entire lives has been violently, and they must come together in order to survive.

I was especially impressed by the author's POV shift from chapter to chapter. It's not an easy thing to do, but she carries it off well here, and we never lose the nuances that distinguish the individuals.

Let us hope this is the first of many excellent trilogies from Ms. Wilde.

fascinating premise

I struggled a little with how many stars to give because I did skim through parts - it's the story of a catastrophe and a culture's fight for survival, but told more through the thoughts and feelings and social dynamics of the main characters than anything else. And...

Couldn't finish

Tedious character building. Didn't get past Chapter 2. Narrator does a good job. Plot line sounded so good, too.

Pretty great

This was a rather enjoyable audio book, it was well read and rather than spoon feed you the answers leaves you a trail of breadcrumbs throughout the book that allows you to figure it out for yourself.

While it takes a couple of chapters to get into the flow of the story once you do it is difficult to put down.

There is a touching love story between the two main characters that, while I love and is tastefully done, thankfully does not wash away a fascinating plot.

I look forward to listening to book 2.
