    Editorial Reviews:
Fans of history will love this edition of iMinds, wherein listeners are not only given access to the masterpieces inside the world-famous Parisian museum, but they are also taken on a historical tour of the Louvre edifice itself, which was both a fortress and a royal palace before it housed works of art like Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Listeners will be eager to see the Louvre's acquisitions in person after this episode, but if this audio encyclopedia entry is as close as they physically come to Paris, they're not doing so badly. Australian actress Margo Knight lends her mature and well-rationed voice to the narration, which is further enhanced by background chamber music.

    Publisher's Summary:
The authors are Sven Friedrich, curator of the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth, and Gerhard K. Englert, the editor of the previous audio guides that have been released in the same series and that explore the world of classical music. Together, the authors offer listeners a modern, convenient and quick introduction to Wagner's cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung.
The narrator is the distinguished British bass-baritone Sir John Tomlinson, who has appeared in countless performances at the Bayreuth Festival since making his début there as Wotan in 1988.
    Members Reviews:
A good starting point to help appreciate the story of the Ring cycle and basic musical motifs
This is a great starting point for a beginner to understand both the key plot elements and key motifs in the Ring Cycle. This CD, with Tomlinson's overly dramatic narration, tells the story of the Ring cycle, and introduces each motif as the story unfolds.
The second (non-Ring) CD you should buy to help you appreciate the Ring cycle isAn Introduction To Der Ring Des Nibelungen (2 CD). This CD is more sophisticated and assumes you already know the basic story. This CD would be appreciated by people who already appreciate the Ring but who would like a better understanding of the relationships among motifs.
I bought and listened to this Sven/Tomlinson disc first, and then listened to the Solti/Cooke disc second. This order makes sense, and both of them led me to a greater appreciation of the Ring cycle. I still listen to parts of both of them once-in-a-while, to remind myself about different motifs.

Great chapter lengths and is mostly in easy German
Textbook for a 3000 level German Literature course. Book is mostly in easy German and with a dictionary at your side you'll be just fine, assuming you have some German language courses under your belt already. Great selection of pieces and chapters are not long. It behooves to use as a springboard for further research into the various authors and genres, but it is a great summary and good place to start.
Fair warning that this book only details about up to the 1990's with five or less significant authors mentioned during their "present-day" final chapter. Much as happened since then, but until another movement can replace the shallowness of Pop and Entertainment, I doubt there will be anything worth noting anyway.
    Great buy
    Very clean book

  • Literary Theory Audiobook by David Carter

    Title: Literary Theory
    Subtitle: The Pocket Essential Guide
    Author: David Carter
    Narrator: Annette Rizzo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-17-09
    Publisher: Matrix Digital Publishing
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
The problem is that defining what you mean by 'theory', let alone what you mean by 'literary', causes most people, including the theorists themselves, to mumble incoherently and shuffle their feet. And it is not as though there were just one coherent body of theory to master: there are Formalist, Structuralist, Marxist, and Psychoanalytical theories; Post-structuralist, Post-colonialist, and Postmodernist theories; not to mention Feminist and Queer theories, and even Anti-Theories!
Most books providing introductions to "Literary Theory" are long-winded tomes, guiding dogged readers through the twists and turns of critical analysis and logic. This small volume goes to the heart of the key concepts of literary theory, explaining them in clear, everyday language.
It provides witty and memorable comments and quotations, and enables the student of literature to raise the most pertinent and challenging questions, which even university professors have difficulty answering.
    Members Reviews:
    Not bad
It's a good overview; covers all the relevant topics. Especially useful if you already know theory and want a refresher or an outline to keep skills sharp. Wonderful that the narrator's voice is a woman's (at least for my taste), but she talks just a beat too fast for explaining difficult material. This thing could have been about an hour longer, just a tad more engaging, and been much better.
Appreciably Greater Detail than Similar Intros
Carter's book is superior to any other literary theory introduction I have read, filled with more detail than others that I've purchased, including Culler's Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction, published by Oxford.
    Reads like a dictionary
I never took literary theory in school (which I always regreted) and thought a primer on it would help me appreciate literature more unfortunately this book is just a series of definitions read out in a rather dry form.
This book would be fine as a pocket dictionary but as an audiobook it is totally useless and dry. If anything it is a reminder of junior high English when we had to define all the different parts of literature (climax, foreshadowing) totally removed from any passion or engagement. Hardly a means of better appreciating or even understanding literature.
    Another attempt, another failure
Literary theory is important. It is also not as complicated and complex as so many academics seem to want to make it. David Carter's attempt to present literary theory in the language of those mere mortals who are not part of the academic 'club' fails, and falls hard. He not only imbues his analysis with an 'Englishness' that should have been left behind on colonial sands, but couches his work in the language of a Victorian toff. Frustratingly boring, uninspiring and, quite simply, another failure.
    It was great.
If you could sum up Literary Theory in three words, what would they be?
    Viewpoints are different.
What did you like best about this story?
The essential was given clearly, intelligibly, and with humor.
What about Annette Rizzos performance did you like?
    I liked it very much.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    The last chapter.
    Any additional comments?
It would be nice if you mentioned that there is a kindle edition for this book.

    Not a translation !!!!
Warning : this is NOT a translation of Wedekind's play but a rather distant adaptation, leaving the bulk of Wedekind's message out. What a disappointment !
    Brilliant Adaptation
I have some interest in the World War periods historically so I was very intrigued to listen to this version of this play. I enjoyed it emensely and recognised the strict teachers from tales my parents told me of their days at school. I am not sure of the reason for changing the period to it works well and I like to see people looking at works and using their imaginations to make books fresh and exciting!
I thought the acting was on the whole very good and I particularly liked the relationship between Melchoir and Wendla, especially as they choose to make the characters their own and not just a copy of previous actors who have played those roles so I will look out for other work with Antony Lewis and Helen Oakleigh as so many other actors these days do not seem to take risks.
My nephew is studying this play at school so I shall certainly be sending a copy his way.
    Why did they change it?
Nothing is added to this play by transposing it to war time, and not even the pronounciation of names is kept the same; anglicising everything needlessly.
The acting is fine from some character such as anthony Lewis who does a great job, but the actress playing Wendla is weak, and you simply cannot feel sympathy for her character like you can in the original play.
New monologues are added in for Wendla and Moritz, the latter actually adding something to the play, the former being just pointless.
Despite the start being trully awful, and the acting being mediocre to poor in many cases, the dramatisation does pick up in the final few scenes which is what merits this recording a 2 star review.

    Members Reviews:
    Maxi-Shakespeare
First of all, let me say that "Twelfth Night" is wonderful Shakespeare. It's great for an introduction to the bard: the story is easy to follow, the language is beautiful, there's music and comedy, and the characters are very appealing.
The format here is the difference. There's an introduction, with background on the play as well as a brief biography of Shakespeare and his times. Then, the play begins. A narrator interrupts the action every few lines to re-phrase in "plain English" what's been said. This sort of interpretation is helpful to newcomers to the play, but it can also be quite distracting and, understandably, disrupts the flow of the production. For the best experience of the play itself, I think the way to proceed would be to listen first to a version without the commentary, then to this.
The commentary is quite good, I think. The explanations are presented clearly, and there is a distinction between information that is historical and that which is purely speculative (as much of Shakespeare's personal history must be).
This approach to "Twelfth Night" might be an excellent way to prepare for seeing a production of the play and is of interest to anyone wanting to experience it in considerable depth. Like others in the series, "Twelfth Night: Shakespeare Appreciated" is an obviously well-researched and well-executed effort. The experience might, however, require more commitment than the casual playgoer/reader wants.
    Excellent
The only reason I would have given this four stars, is because Twelfth Night isn't my favorite Shakespeare play. On the other hand, this group of narrators gets 5 stars!! This is the third book I have purchased in Shakespeare Appreciated. It won't be the last.
    Very Much Pleased!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It is most likely I would, though there are a few obscene references throughout the narration that may detour me from recommending it to all audiences.
This is the type of audiobook that is great for introducing someone to Twelfth Night. The narrator does a great job by first introducing Shakespeare, explaining his era, giving some historical details concerning his writings and life, and then delving into the play -- in which she gives helpful explanations and insights throughout.
