The 15th century saw the evolution of a distinct and powerfully influential European artistic culture. But what does the familiar phrase Renaissance Art actually refer to? Through engaging discussion of timeless works by artists such as Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo, Tom Nichols offers a masterpiece of his own as he explores the truly original and diverse character of the art of the Renaissance.
    Editorial Reviews:
This is a must-have audiobook for art history lovers and students alike. Tom Nichols' Renaissance Art serves as a fundamental introduction to the values and developments of art in this time period. The audio is coherent and the scholarship engaging. Nichols provides the listener with the necessary context to make the information valuable and evocative. Paul English's narration contributes to the success of this audiobook. English's steadfast voice and enthusiastic inflections keep the listener engaged. Audiences will be delighted with Nichols' beautiful descriptions of work by famous artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Jan van Eyck.
    Critic Reviews:
"Expertly informed and highly readable. Nichols provides the non-specialist with an in-depth analysis. By focusing on key masterpieces Nichols provides the non-specialist with an in-depth analysis... while also illuminatingly placing them within the wider context of Renaissance culture." (Peter Humfrey, Professor of Art History, University of St Andrews)
"An excellent introduction. The book is exceptionally informative...and articulated in a way that is remarkably fresh." (Malcolm Bull, The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, and Andrew W. Mellon Visiting Professor, The Courtauld Institute of Art)
"An excellent introduction to the art of the Renaissance. Nichols offers fresh insights and well-observed commentary on individual works and their place within the history of art." (Tania String, Senior Lecturer in History of Art, University of Bristol)

    A Solid Beginning
For anyone who wants to dip their toes into the world of art history, this deceptively short book is an excellent place to start. The author gives you a list of the artists and works that are referenced, and even if you are immediately familiar with them, it's helpful to have them in front of you. A quick online image search is all you'll need for each of these works. The cross-section of works used are by no means fully representational of the era, but they do help to illustrate the author's text. From there, history, technique, and personality of the artists unfold. Much like with many of the best overview books out there, this is one that - assuming the reader is engaged with the material - it'll leave behind a solid foundation and provide a springboard for the reader to take the next steps into that world.
    Loved it!
Where does Renaissance Art: Bolinda Beginner Guides rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This was one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. I learned so much as a beginner to this type of art and I I really loved it. Easy to comprehend and follow. At the beginning of the short intro the narrator gives you a list of all the paintings and sculptures that will be critiqued throughout the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
A Postillion Struck by Lightning was a best seller on first publication and marked Dirk Bogarde's transition from star of stage and screen to a best-selling and internationally acclaimed author. This vivid and engaging memoir traces the first steps of Dirk Bogarde as a young actor before he became world famous as well as his childhood amidst the enchanting beauty of rural Sussex. Here is the delightful harmony of summer days spent fishing with his young sister, a hunt for an escaped tortoise, the discovery of the biggest mushroom in the world, and the quest to win a pet canary at the local fair. Then came the plays he and sister used to put on in their barn, followed by the local amateur dramatic society, all a prelude to his growing desire to join the world of the stage.
    Members Reviews:
Fantastic Read and wonderfully read by the Author
I have been waiting for ages to have Bogarde's autobiographical books available (I have them all on cassette but no longer a good way to listen to them. I hope that the rest (Backcloth, An Orderly Man etc) will become available soon as well as his novels - I will purchase them all!
A nostalgic trip back in time
Dirk Bogarde's marvelous voice is so relaxing as he reads his enchanting story of long, carefree, summer days of his youth. You can almost feel that you are there with him and his sister and the reminiscences took me right back to my own childhood. Dirk Bogarde will always be remembered as one of this country's finest actors and should also get credit for being a great author. I really enjoyed this audio book and just know I shall revisit it several times.
    A journey back in time
This wonderful book of the childhood memories of Dirk Bogarde takes me back to the tiny details of my own youth in the Dorset countryside of the 1950s. Read by the author, Dirk Bogarde has such a familiar and warm reading voice, that he makes it come doubly alive. His snatches of conversation with his sister are so real. His depictions of the countryside so vivid. His recollections of his beginnings in the theatre totally without pretention or name dropping. What a real pleasure it has been to listen to him. I shall certainly download the other books in the series.
    Blissful
Dirk Bogarde takes you by the hand and leads you through his childhood with ease - I love all his books but those which centre on his time as a child in the rosy days betwixt the wars are especially precious - to think his agent wanted him to take a more 'adult' approach ? - thank heaven he didn't listen - but you should - wonderful stuff.
    A surprising man
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Great insight into a person who could easily be misjudged.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Postillion Struck by Lightning?
    His wartime experiences.
Have you listened to any of Dirk Bogardes other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes the same quality, depth and breadth.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I don't share my emotions with the general public.
    Any additional comments?
    Listen to it.

Title: The Good, The Bad and The Multiplex
    Author: Mark Kermode
    Narrator: Mark Kermode
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-11
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 42 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
In It's Only a Movie, the incomparable Mark Kermode showed us the weird world of a film critic's life lived in widescreen. Now, in The Good, The Bad and The Multiplex, he takes us into the belly of the beast to ask: 'What's wrong with modern movies?'
If blockbusters make money no matter how bad they are, then why not make a good one for a change? How can 3-D be the future of cinema when it's been giving audiences a headache for over a hundred years? Why pay to watch films in cinemas that don't have a projectionist but do have a fast-food stand? And, in a world in which Sex and the City 2 was a hit, what the hell are film critics for?
Outspoken, opinionated and hilariously funny, The Good, The Bad and The Multiplex is a must for anyone who has ever sat in an undermanned, overpriced cinema and asked themselves: 'How the hell did things get to be this terrible?'
    Critic Reviews:
"The Good, the Bad and the Multiplex by the reviewer, Mark Kermode is an angry blast about the state of cinema-going, from the cost if shepherding sweet-toothed children past overpriced confectionary to suffering through unfocused prints in unchecked auditoria. The scruffy cattle-pen experience will be familiar to anyone who has visited a mall cinema lately." (Christopher Fowler Books of the Year Independent on Sunday)
"Kermode sits in the stalls peeking through his fingers at what were served up on the silver screen and motormouthing about bad cinema in a frank and funny counterblast to all the Hollywood hype" (Iain Finlayson and Kate Saunders Saga Magazine)
"As listeners of his radio show know, the angrier Mark Kermode gets, the funnier he is. Good news then: his latest book is a collection of FURIOUS rants against the sins of modern cinema. Elegantly lacerating wit." (Empire, Nov)

If your a fan of the show, or like me a regular podcast listener, I couldn't see why you wouldn't love this. Sure many of the arguments and their supporting anecdotes and statistics have been voiced over the last year on the show, but there's more here. Like the curmudgeonly retelling of a visit to a Multiplex, attending "Blazing Saddles" dressed like Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver and in light of SOPA et al the figures to give a moment to pause next time your hear/read the 'poor us' stories of the Entertainment MegaCorporations. Being read by Mr Kermode himself is a huge benefit, it's like listening to the show. A nice long rant that had to be told by a man who clearly loves his movies.
    Just what you'd expect!
Fans of the Kermode and Mayo BBC 5Live podcast, or people who have previously read/listened to Kermode's previous book, "It's Only A Movie," will know what they're getting. An informed, and often outspoken opinion on the history of, and state of current, cinema. Relevant not only to a UK, but also to a worldwide, audience.

    Title: Modern Bodies

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1930, dancer and choreographer Martha Graham proclaimed the arrival of "dance as an art of and from America". Dancers such as Doris Humphrey, Ted Shawn, Katherine Dunham, and Helen Tamiris joined Graham in creating a new form of dance, and, like other modernists, they experimented with and argued over their aesthetic innovations, to which they assigned great meaning.
Their innovations, however, went beyond aesthetics. While modern dancers devised new ways of moving bodies in accordance with many modernist principles, their artistry was indelibly shaped by their place in society. Modern dance was distinct from other artistic genres in terms of the people it attracted: white women (many of whom were Jewish), gay men, and African American men and women. Women held leading roles in the development of modern dance on stage and off; gay men recast the effeminacy often associated with dance into a hardened, heroic, American athleticism; and African Americans contributed elements of social, African, and Caribbean dance, even as their undervalued role defined the limits of modern dancers' communal visions.
Through their art, modern dancers challenged conventional roles and images of gender, sexuality, race, class, and regionalism with a view of American democracy that was confrontational and participatory, authorial and populist. The book is published by University of North Carolina Press.

What separates a masterpiece from a piece of junk? Thanks to the BBC's Antiques Roadshow and its American spin-off, everyone is searching garage sales and hunting online for hidden gems, wondering whether their attics contain trash or treasures.
In The Art Detective, Philip Mould, one of the world's foremost authorities on British portraiture and an irreverent and delightful expert for the Roadshow, serves up his secrets and his best stories, blending the technical details of art detection and restoration with juicy tales peopled by a range of eccentric collectors, scholars, forgers, and opportunities.

The Art Detective is memoir, mystery, art history, and brilliant yarn all rolled into one.
    Members Reviews:
    The Art Detective was Interesting
I have always been interested in Art and Art History. This book filled in some gaps on how art experts and art dealers get involved with art and find old masterpieces. To be honest, not all of the stories were interesting, but I really enjoyed the stories about the Norman Rockwell and the Winslow Homer. Philip Mould has definitely had a fulfilling career in art. The audiobook performance was well done by James Langton. Now I just need to check on some of the old art lying around in my closets!!
If you enjoy antiques road show and...
Wish you knew even more about the back story, you will love this book. I listened to this book in two sittings, and would have enjoyed more. A glimpse into the way art is "made" or not. I especially loved the story about the "old guy and his treasures". This is a day in the life of a treasure hunter and how he goes about the discovery, and more besides. Sit back and enjoy.
    Art for history's sake
Fascinating subject and good historical underpinning. Talented narrator but read too fast as though he had somewhere else to go.
This book sounds like a collection of war stories but leaves a rich residue of real history and biography.
    Antique Road Show Rocks!
I'm a serious fan of PBS and of Antiques Roadshow in particular. I've always been curious about the appraisers and what happens when the paintings are sold afterwards. Philip Mould deftly writes about that and about how rare and unknown works of art are discovered and authenticated. I liked that each chapter deals with a different painting and the history of the painting. The narration is very well done. I haven't enjoyed a story like this in a while.
More Than the Eye Can See
Philip Mould is an expert in the area of portrait art and participated in Antique Road Show. He tells several interesting stories about some of his finds, as well as fakes and frauds he has uncovered. Art history students might enjoy the information he discusses in this book.
