    Title: Behind the Burly Q
Subtitle: The Story of Burlesque in America
    Author: Leslie Zemeckis
    Narrator: Julia Farhat
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-01-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
By the director of the hit documentary Behind the Burly Q, comes the first-ever oral history of American burlesque - as told by the performers who lived it, often speaking out here for the first time. By telling the intimate and surprising stories from its golden age through the women (and men!) who lived it, Behind the Burly Q reveals the true story of burlesque, even as it experiences a new renaissance.
Burlesque was one of America's most popular forms of live entertainment in the first half of the 20th century. Gaudy, bawdy, and spectacular, the shows entertained thousands of paying customers every night of the week. And yet the legacy of burlesque is often vilified and misunderstood, left out of the history books.
By telling the intimate and surprising stories from its golden age through the women (and men!) who lived it, Behind the Burly Q reveals the true story of burlesque, even as it experiences a new renaissance. Lovingly interviewed by burlesque enthusiast Leslie Zemeckis who produced the hit documentary of the same name, are former musicians, strippers, novelty acts, club owners, authors, and historians - assembled here for the first time ever to tell you just what really happened in a burlesque show. From Jack Ruby and Robert Kennedy to Abbott and Costello - burlesque touched every corner of American life. The sexy shows often poked fun at the upper classes, at sex, and at what people were willing to do in the pursuit of sex. Sadly, many of the performers have since passed away, making this their last, and often only interview. Behind the Burly Q is the definitive history of burlesque during its heyday and an invaluable oral history of an American art form. Funny, shocking, unbelievable, and heartbreaking, their stories will touch your hearts. We invite you to peek behind the curtain at the burly show.
    Editorial Reviews:
As burlesque has experienced a cultural renaissance in the past few years, listeners may be interested in discovering its long and storied history. Leslie Zemeckis provides a unique oral history of the art form in early-20th-century America, told by the women and men who experienced it firsthand. Julia Farhat's performance is wonderfully unobtrusive, allowing the listener's focus to be on the wild tales of the performers, musicians, and nightclub owners who express the bawdy thrills present in those early shows. Though they may be long gone, in Behind the Burly Q, their stories remain in all their glory.

amazing story of an amazing art form
Narration wasn't the best, but the story was still fantasic. As a burlesque perfomer, it's awesome to hear the back stories of this profession.
    WELL RESEARCHED
It is good that the author was able to interview some of the former stars before they passed away. I found it interesting to Google pictures of the dancers as the author discussed them.
    JUST WAY TOOOOO LONG!
This is a great and interesting subject matter. However, it is absolutely not TWELVE-PLUS HOURS interesting!!! Much of the book is repetitive and unnecessary. I saw the documentary based on this work a couple of years ago. It is much, much better than this book! This is truly a account "better served abridged"! Or see if it is still available on Netflix and save almost 10-1/2 hours of your life!

    Title: Tom and Jack
Subtitle: The Intertwined Lives of Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollock
    Author: Henry Adams
    Narrator: Wayne Thompson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-09-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 23 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
The drip paintings of Jackson Pollock, trailblazing Abstract Expressionist, appear to be the polar opposite of Thomas Hart Benton's highly figurative Americana. Yet the two men had a close and highly charged relationship dating from Pollock's days as a student under Benton. Pollock's first and only formal training came from Benton, and the older man soon became a surrogate father to Pollock. In true Oedipal fashion, Pollock even fell in love with Benton's wife. Pollock later broke away from his mentor artistically, rocketing to superstardom with his stunning drip compositions. But he never lost touch with Benton or his ideas - in fact, his breakthrough abstractions reveal a strong debt to Benton's teachings. In an epic story that ranges from the cafés and salons of Gertrude Stein's Paris to the highways of the American West, Henry Adams, acclaimed author of Eakins Revealed, unfolds a poignant personal drama that provides new insights into two of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

    Not Worth the Read
What did you like best about Tom and Jack? What did you like least?
I most liked the story of Jackson Pollock's painting, "Mural," which the narrator pronounced, "Miro." It was a fascinating, mythical story. I wish there had been more stories about his individual paintings.
Has Tom and Jack turned you off from other books in this genre?
I will continue to read books within the arts genre. But not from this author.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator was almost as boring as the book itself. He rarely changed inflection or pace and did not invent different voices for each character.
Do you think Tom and Jack needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The author was attempting to make an original contribution to the field of art history by expanding the relationship between Jackson Pollock and his mentor. However, the book should never have been published. It would work better as a research paper than an actual story. It over promised in terms of story and under-delivered in terms of value or entertainment.
    Any additional comments?
The author is a terrible story-teller. Pollock lived a fascinating life, but the author was so focused on establishing his "original connection" between Pollock and Benton that it lost all of its flair.
I suggest you READ, not listen...
I've had to stop after eight hours because I can't stand any more mispronunciations by narrator. If an actor has a contract to read a book, I would expect that s/he would look up any words s/he isn't 100% sure about. There are a lot of European names in this book, especially French. I almost stopped when "bois" became "boze" but when Piet Mondrian's was pronounced "Pye-ette", I threw in the towel. I even called a Dutch friend to check (his name is Piet) and he was in stitches at my question. This is a very good book that deserves a professional reader. Sorry, Mr. Adams that your book wasn't treated better.
    A tad too padded out.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, if this period in american painting and pollock in particular is already of special interest, but then, it may already be familiar territory.

  • An Emergency in Slow Motion Audiobook by William Todd Schultz

Title: An Emergency in Slow Motion
Subtitle: The Inner Life of Diane Arbus
    Author: William Todd Schultz
    Narrator: Elizabeth Wiley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 13 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
Diane Arbus was one of the most brilliant and revered photographers in the history of American art. Her portraits, in stark black and white, seemed to reveal the psychological truths of their subjects. But after she committed suicide at the age of 48, the presumed chaos and darkness of her own inner life became, for many viewers, inextricable from her work.
In the spirit of Janet Malcolm's classic examination of Sylvia Plath, The Silent Woman, William Todd Schultz's An Emergency in Slow Motion reveals the creative and personal struggles of Diane Arbus. Schultz, an expert in personality psychology, veers from traditional biography to look at Arbus's life through the prism of five central mysteries: her childhood, her outcast affinity, her sexuality, her time in therapy, and her suicide. He seeks not to give Arbus some definitive diagnosis, but to ponder some of the private motives behind her public works and acts. In this approach, Schultz not only goes deeper into her life than any previous writing, but provides a template to think about the creative life in general.
Schultz's careful analysis is informed, in part, by the recent release of Arbus's writing by her estate, as well as interviews with Arbus's last therapist. An Emergency in Slow Motion combines new revelations and breathtaking insights into a must-listen psychobiography about a monumental artist - the first new look at Arbus in 25 years.
    Members Reviews:
    Beautiful disaster
Although tragic, I felt a beautiful clarity in connection with my own vision. Diane's artistic psychoanalysis was beautifully conveyed and wonderfully presented.
    The Title Says It All
Where does An Emergency in Slow Motion rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I listen to hundreds every year(to give perspective), I would rate this around 100 only because of the reader. . Although I found the subject, herself, to be a rather repulsive figure, the writing is superb with minimal conjectures and salient observations(like the DSM is a collection of rubbish). Considering that my own life, as an adult, was beginning at the time she died, I do understand some of her fascination with the formerly forbidden experimental phases in the decade before her death.Suicide seemed like the only possible outcome of such a life on the edge...death on her own terms at her chosen time. She had lost interest in photography and the world.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Helen Boigon because she never knew he patient at all.
What about Elizabeth Wileys performance did you like?
The most excellent possible choice of readers, Elizabeth Wiley made this book come alive or I never could have gotten past the first chapter. Just the right phrasing and emphasis. Her voice was authoritative and convincing. It was almost like she had observed Arbus life.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No.. although I did feel sorry for this poor woman searching for something that she never found. She seemed to have no spiritual depth. I,personally, dont find her work exceptional.
    Any additional comments?
Not normally a book I would read, listening to it was more tolerable. It is doubtful I would recommend it to anyone else.
    I had no idea??
I feel a little bit like a nun or ageing spinster now.

    Title: On Architecture
Subtitle: Collected Reflections on a Century of Change

    Narrator: T. David Rutherford
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 26 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 22 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
For more than half a century, Ada Louise Huxtable's keen eye and vivid writing have reinforced to readers how important architecture is and why it continues to be both controversial and fascinating - making her one of the best-known critics in the world.
On Architecture collects the best of Huxtable's writing from the New York Times, New York Review of Books, Wall Street Journal, and her various books. In these selections, Huxtable examines the 20th century's most important architectural masters and projects, cataloging the seismic shifts in style, function, and fashion that have led to the dramatic new architecture of the 21st century.
    Members Reviews:
    Embarassing narration
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Ada Louise Huxtable was a perceptive, articulate and interesting observer of the built environment. While some of these essays have proven to be a bit dated, hearing her perspective over 50 years is fascinating. Then there is the narration. The narrator continually mispronounces names, is jerky in his pronunciation, seems to have little or no understanding of foreign words and is embarrassingly ignorant of even the basic terminology in architecture. I had to stop listening because his errors got too irritating to continue.
    Disappointed
As an architect, the names and places are so indelibly ingrained into to our heads that hearing so many poorly pronounced names and places became a distraction. I found myself having to rewind a few seconds quite often because my head was attempting to decipher a name, and lost track of the rest of the sentence.
The narrator is clearly not familiar with the material, nor was the producer. Ultimately, it is a disservice to Huxtables work. I couldn't even get past the first 2 hrs of the book before giving up on it. Wish I'd have a mulligan on that Audible credit...
    Was she a total objectivist?
She seems to like Ayn Rand and to hate taxes.
Either way. I loved it. I learned a lot about architecture from it
    She would be aghast
What did you like best about On Architecture? What did you like least?
Huxtable's many decades long view of the New York, US and world architecture scene. Great insights that we can see evolving over the years. The organization of these essays could have been better; the dates keep jumping. Her sometimes scathing views are still relevant today.
What didnt you like about T. David Rutherfords performance?
There was not much to like about this performance. The rhythm and emphasis of the phrases were awkward and jerky. He mispronounces continually. Why didn't he bother to research the French origin words, instead of making it up, incorrectly? But the worst was his mashing of the names of the great architects that Huxtable refers to. Over and over. I've never heard a more ignorant performance.
How Not To Pronounce Every Architect's Name
The essays are brilliant. The reader, however, mispronounces at least one word per paragraph--good old-fashioned English words that he apparently never heard in school and figured he didn't need to look up. It's occasionally amusing but usually distracting. And when it comes to the names of architects, or French terms used in design and architecture, it's appalling. Hearing Mies referred to as Mize again and again is like fingernails in a chalkboard.

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
In this engaging series of lectures, Carroll William Westfall, the University of Notre Dame's Frank Montana Professor of Architecture, delves into the classical principles of Western architecture. Exploring features such as ornamentation, decoration, and innovation, Professor Westfall shows how architecture is derived from the very principles that form the cornerstones of our civilization - and, with scholarly precision, he also demonstrates how this field of endeavor is rooted in nature itself.
    Members Reviews:
    Truly fascinating!
    Any additional comments?
In this short series of lectures, Professor Westfall brilliantly underscores the value of tradition in the fields of architecture and city building. His points of view have clearly been polished by years of consideration and he integrates a variety of fields in his discussions: philosophy, history, political science, etc.
He succeeds in speaking of architecture without any illustrations. Thus, though he largely shares the same positions, he comes out as the complement of Léon Krier who often expresses himself with drawings and very little text.
It must be pointed out that Professor Westfall, though critical of modernism, is not at all closed to modernity.
    Outrageous!
Would you try another book from Professor Carroll William Westfall and/or the narrator?
    No
What could Professor Carroll William Westfall have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Not written it
What didnt you like about the narrators performance?
    Everything
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No
    Any additional comments?
This is disgusting conservative Christian sexist racist waffle passed as academia. I am in shock. I tried to accept it as an interesting window into a frame of mind different from my own but was reduced to shouting profanities at my iPad in disbelief at what I was hearing! It is off the richter. Although I did listen to the whole thing, like a train crash it just kept getting worse! I am relieved to discover that audible offers refunds. Don't even think about it. Unless you enjoy a good rage against the machine and are in the mood to pace around and rant in outrage.
    Hideous
This is awful. For the first few minutes I thought these lectures would be beneficial. Professor Carroll William Westfall delivers at a sensible pace and his way of teaching is articulate and his thoughts work through a logical process... That is, until you reach five minutes into the first lecture (which is 40 minutes long), which quickly turns into a rambunctious polemic on the differences between man and beast. He speaks with great authority that man has a soul while animals do not. Whether you believe this or not, I see it totally irrelevant to architecture. Talk about man, yes, fine. Just please do away with the comparisons to all other animals. I do not care to listen to stories about your grandfather shooting squirrels out of the tree with a 22 calibre shotgun! He spends most of the 40 minutes trying to describe why we're different from dogs. Or whales.

    Publisher's Summary:
Vermeer: Portraits of A Lifetime is a revolutionary reexamination of the mystique and mythology surrounding the 17th Century Dutch Master painter, Johannes Vermeer. For the first time in over 300 years names of people who posed for his paintings are identified. An unknown portrait of Vermeer, painted by his friend, Gerard ter Borch, is exposed. This book is an empathetic retrospective, built on observations that reveal answers to dozens of speculations about his paintings, his wife, his daughters, and contemporaries who were the subjects of his art, and with whom he shared his brief life in Delft. The PDF version of this book includes full color plates of each of the remaining works of Vermeer. The paperback version contains black and white plates of each of his paintings. Researched and written by Lawrence R. Spencer, author and master oil painter who, without training, "remembered" how to paint at the age of 30.
The few existing paintings by Vermeer our priceless works of art, housed in the most prestigious art museums of the world. In July 2004 Vermeer's painting Young Woman Seated at the Virginals' was sold at auction for $42 million. The value of an undisputed Vermeer would likely exceed $100,000,000. The authenticity of Young Woman Seated at the Virginals is disputed which explains the relatively low sales price. Because the few authenticated Vermeers are all in museum collections , the only way to acquire a Vermeer is to steal one which happened in 1990. The Concert was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and has not been recovered.

    Publisher's Summary:
Photographs Not Taken is a collection of photographers' essays about failed attempts to make a picture. Editor Will Steacy asked each photographer to abandon the conventional tools needed to make a photograph - camera, lens, film - and instead make a photograph using words, to capture the image (and its attendant memories) that never made it through the lens. In each essay, the photograph has been stripped down to its barest and most primitive form: the idea behind it. This collection provides a unique and original interpretation of the experience of photographing, and allows the reader into a world rarely seen: the image making process itself. Photographs Not Takenfeatures contributions by: Peter Van Agtmael, Dave Anderson, Timothy Archibald, Roger Ballen, Thomas Bangsted, Juliana Beasley, Nina Berman, Elinor Carucci, Kelli Connell, Paul D'Amato, Tim Davis, KayLynn Deveney, Doug Dubois, Rian Dundon, Amy Elkins, Jim Goldberg, Emmet Gowin, Gregory Halpern, Tim Hetherington, Todd Hido, Rob Hornstra, Eirik Johnson, Chris Jordan, Nadav Kander, Ed Kashi, Misty Keasler, Lisa Kereszi, Erika Larsen, Shane Lavalette, Deana Lawson, Joshua Lutz, David Maisel, Mary Ellen Mark, Laura McPhee, Michael Meads, Andrew Moore, Richard Mosse, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Laurel Nakadate, Ed Panar, Christian Patterson, Andrew Phelps, Sylvia Plachy, Mark Power, Peter Riesett, Simon Roberts, Joseph Rodriguez, Stefan Ruiz, Matt Salacuse, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Aaron Schuman, Jamel Shabazz, Alec Soth, Amy Stein, and others.

They have the power to steal your breath, provoke tears. They might overwhelm and inspire you, bring you to your knees, even. But they won't. These moments passed into oblivion, unfixed by the camera - snapshots that went unsnapped. Now, they're in a book: a photography book without pictures. (The New York Times)
Photographs Not Taken is a book about photography in which there is not a single photograph. It's a collection of essays by 62 photographers about the ones that got away: the images - burned to memory and conscience - that, for one reason or another, the photographer could not makeAfter reading Photographs Not Taken, those moments of hesitation, so warmly shared, are far more arresting than some of the most engaging photographs. As Aaron Schuman speculates, those memories are "perhaps the photographs kept, not taken." (Wired)
The most thoughtful and provocative book on photography I've read in a long time contains not a single photograph, but it's full of memorable images. For Photographs Not Taken, editor Will Steacy asked 62 photographers to describe the ones that got away - the "mental negatives" that haunt them years later. The results - brief essays, many no more than a page - are unexpectedly eloquent and revealing. (Photograph)

Sounds like it was narrated by a smartphone helper bot - no emotion, no inflection, the reader had no connection to what he was reading. It made this virtually unlistenable.

Excellent book - awful audio version
What would have made Eine Geschichte der Welt in 100 Objekten better?
The subject of the book is great and very interesting. The reading is excellent, but for some reason someone decided to add music inbetween chaptters. Or ... not really music; more like sounds. Or noise. Actually, sometimes it sounded like someone trying to smash a piano with a banjo while playing the shower scene music from 'Psycho'. Only worse. I had to stop listening to this book after a couple of hours because the music was so incredibly annoying.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Eine Geschichte der Welt in 100 Objekten?
Well, the reading was great, and parts of the book stod out as very interesting, but the most memorable moment was probably when I decided to stop listening to it
Have you listened to any of Hanns Zischler and Nico Holonics s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but their performance here is excellent.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Eine Geschichte der Welt in 100 Objekten?
    Every single scene involving music.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book and a terrible book. The stories are great, well writtten, interesting, and well read. But I simply can't imagine what drove the editors to decide that music needed to be added in order to enhance the listening experience, because it doesn't. Here's one credit wasted on a book which I'll never finish.
