A Must Read

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! Through excellent storytelling you really get to know the characters and grow to love them, feeling for them as they navigate a maze of complications and ups and downs. The author is eloquent as she weaves together this story. I have a hard time reading new books as I'm a habitual re-reader--Until I picked this up. I couldn't stop reading and actually woke up one morning with the book still in my hand and my glasses still on. A new favorite for me to read over and over :)

I'm impressed by the characters and the writing style. The tension builds in a believable way and the changes the narrating character go through are believable, real, but weird which makes you want to get to know her better and find out who "he" really is . . . I was reminded of something that John Lennon said about colors and that made this not only plausible but also with the other changes going on with her, expected.

This is a sensitively written story with characters who choose & choose again, forever reasoning for their happiness. We are not born with answers. We must figure them out as we travel through life.

One of the finest novels I've read recently

An excellent read, well-written, beautiful language. Very thought-provoking. Raises complex life-questions and provides different ways of looking at and responding to these. There are also memorable characters and landscapes. The writer uncovers, in effect, the intricate relationships among people as well as people and their landscapes. It is a novel that you don't want to end, even as you are caught up with wanting to know how the various plots untangle.

I loved the author's style of writing and the delightful pictures in my mind as I read. The story was just ok. I found myself speed reading toward the end.

Choices...life changing choices! Joshua Feldman's book will make you realize how complicated and challenging family can be - "family intimacy, familiarity" during a holiday dinner including the family photo session.

Oddly Compelling

My Review:

I struggled through this oddly compelling train wreck of a story, yet similar to arriving at the scene of a massive train wreck, morbid curiosity kept me from looking away. Adam and Marrisa were strangers who lived on opposite sides of the United States but met while traveling on Thanksgiving Day; both were in the midst of yet another heinous screw-up. The only thing either one of these characters had seemed to master was the art of poor decisions. These people were toxic, and it was no wonder, their histories had been poison. Yet I couldnât stop reading. They ultimately ended up joining forces after the request of a ride, which had the effect of kicking an impending strong wind into hurricane category.

The overwhelming majority of the characters mentioned in this story were not likable or admirable people while most were, in fact, self-serving, obnoxious, and reprehensible. Despite their best intentions and hopes, each stop the pair made during their nightmarish Thanksgiving holiday, and each additional family member that was visited was more abhorrent than the last.

Whiney and boring!

Whiney and boring! So slow and definitely not a page turner. Hard to come up with 15 words for this review.

Uneven stories and unpolished narration

The first and third stories were, in my opinion, better than the second, which featured a main character who was not entirely likeable. The narrator for all three stories was probably the least-polished narrator Ive heard. In all three stories she mispronounced words or emphasized incorrect syllables and always sounded like she was reading from a book rather than voicing characters, which made it hard to get into the stories. All three stories seemed somewhat outdated. My favorite story was the third one, which featured the most relatable characters and would probably make a good movie.

It was a pretty smart decision on the part of Picador to release Ashley Shelbyâs debut novel, SOUTH POLE STATION, at the height of summer, just when readers sweltering on beaches and in un-air-conditioned apartments start to feel the teensiest bit nostalgic for snow and ice. This book transports them deep into one of the remotest places on the planet --- and into the recognition that philosophical conflicts and past demons can never be truly escaped.

Not a patch on the original she devil novel

This book makes no sense if you havent read the original Life and Loves of a She Devil and/or seen the TV series starring Julie T. Wallace, Patricia Hodge and Dennis Waterman. Even though Id done both I found the present book confusing as numerous children, step-children and grandchildren of the main characters are introduced and the narrative jumps about with details of their lives mixed up with visits by Mary Fishers ghost, scenes with a very elderly Bobo and the ruminations of the She Devil in her 90th decade, plus the thoughts of other peripheral characters.

There is very little actual story just a miss-mash of words that are often more like a stream of consciousness that allowed the author to go off on self-indulgent verbal riffs of foul-mouthed venom or regurgitate out-of date feminist paranoia.

Half-way through I was getting so bored with the book I started skipping chapters. I would have returned the book had I not got it free in a 2 for 1 offer.

I have enjoyed many of the authors books so was disappointed that she has produced this tedious book.

An excellent read for those who like an intelligent vs bubblegum romance. I cried & laughed for the first time reading a book, in quite a while.

This was a treat -- a perfect batch of stories. Hilarious and incisive and everything that fiction does best. It's the only intelligent way to process the political climate now while laughing.

My post election psychotherapy is going to be a long, necessary and at times an arduous journey and audiobooks are a definitely integral part of it. This book ensnared me with its appropriate title but each segment is an accurate depiction of everything that is wrong with some people in this great country. I think that is all i need to say. Witty, bittersweet, factual and pregnant to an array of reflections...

I just felt that this book was random and I wasn't so sure what the point was.
